Crowvember II: The Going Gets Chough. Post here to be assigned a corvid!
Hey, the old thread got MURDERED by the events which happened so we're going to make a new one! You may not get the same bird that you got the first time around, or maybe you will! Maybe you didn't get one in 2015, so come on and have a crow. I promise no unkindness.
Corvids are a family of large passerine birds that exist on every continent except Antarctica. Humans have respected the intelligence of corvids for thousands of year. Some Mesoamerican religions believed the world was created by a giant raven; Odin, the chief deity of Norse mythology, kept two pet ravens, Huginn and Muninn) as symbols of his wisdom and observers of Midgard. There are many other fables of myths where corvids play the role of a wise or clever creature, outsmarting other species, including humans, and in some cases torturing them, as in the case of Edgar Allen's Poe's poem.
Corvids are pretty damn smart. Not just the smartest family of birds but also smarter than many species of mammals. They have shown the abilities in studies to recognize pictures and reflections of themselves. They are intelligent enough to hide their own food supply in many different locations, and remember all of these locations of the hidden food weeks, even months later. Several species of corvids have been observed not just using crude tools, but modifying existing tools to create new tools in adaptation to changing scenarios requiring tools. They are also complex problem-solvers; some crows were observed with a nut whose shell they were unable to crack. They solved the problem by placing the nut in the middle of a street and waiting for a car to run it over. They mate for life and form colonies and mobs that band together to drive off larger species of birds.
The term corvid is normally associated with crows and ravens, but the corvid family extends far beyond that. It also includes magpies, jays, choughs and others. There are over 100 species in the corvid family; post here and you will be assigned one of them.

You are
the house crow
(Corvus splendens)
The scientific name for the house crow means 'shiny raven' and seems to be befitting this bird. It is native to South Asia but has been spread to other regions of Asia and the Middle East through stowaways on human shipping vessels. A non-migratory species with roosts of thousands of birds, the house crow is sometimes considered invasive or annoying due to their loud noises. They are easily distinguished from other species of crows by their lean, shimmering bodies and a beak that is proportionally longer than other species.the house crow
(Corvus splendens)
In some parts of Asia where tropical fruit is plentiful, they hang out with parakeets and other parrot-type birds who enjoy the same fruits. It can be beneficial to larger mammals, whom they sometimes eat small parasites off of. Otherwise, the house crow operates as a scavenger, scooping up chunks of carrion and fish or stealing rice and grain from human settlements. There are no major populations of the house crow which reside outside of human inhabited areas, and the house crow has no natural predators in the animal kingdom.

Large groups of house crows congregate during mating season, where they will team up to chase away species of birds which are known to prey on eggs and nestlings. Their courtship ritual is a simple case of the male and female preening each other and rubbing their bills together prior to very rapid copulation. As scavengers, the females build the nest of any materials they can gather, including human waste like chunks of wire, metal and plastic.

You get the Lidth's jay (Garrulus lidthi)!sharkmafia wrote: ↑Thu Nov 02, 2017 1:44 amcorvids are fucking cool smart-ass birds and i like them. give me one
This beautiful corvid looks as though it may have attempted to devolve into a tropical parrot and given up halfway. This is perhaps owing to its isolation, as it can only be found in the forests of two minor Japanese islands slightly north of Okinawa.
The Lidth's jay is closely-related the more well-known Eurasian jay that is found throughout the northern half of the Eastern Hemisphere. Unlike many other jay species, the Lidth's jay has not significantly adapted to thriving around human settlement, due to the lower human population of the islands it resides on, and the presence of a deadly venomous snake species in the forests where it resides, which has served to discourage human impact on the jay and other endemic species on these islands. These oak forests are also rich with acorns that serve as the jay's primary food source.
