And so far my thoughts are Matt Smith >> Christopher Eccleson.

Just wait until you see David Tennant as the Doctor. He's magnificent.

Just recently started watching this, specifically the episodes with the Ninth Doctor. Just finished the episode "Dalek" earlier this evening.

I've also read a bunch of spoilers on the series and what's to come. I'm really, really terrible about keeping myself spoiler free.

Gentlemen, let us agree to our differences of opinion. After all, I'm sure we can agree that Pertwee was the best Doctor.

Eccleston > Smith > Tennant for me, as far as New Who goes.

I did enjoy Tennant, but the biggest problem I had was that he could not do angry doctor that well. It felt forced. Smith was the same way at first, but he grew into it. Eccleston could do the eccentric, goofy and angry Doctor perfectly.

Also, The Doctor is a bit of an asshole. Eccleston really nailed that character trait, something Tennant never really did. Smith is good at that, and also for showing the contempt The Doctor would sometimes have for humanity when they're doing something stupid.

While Tennant is still my favorite, I have to agree. But as far as angry doctor, one of my favorite scenes was when he ran from The Family and they have a shot of Tennant when they alien says, "The Fury of the Timelord" which I thought was really good.

This scene: contains spoiler!

I'll will, then. I'm not going back to the Christmas episode, though.

I forgot the other big thing I hate about the series three finale: Captain Jack = the Face of Boe. Fuck that noise :gonkity:

My problem with it is, the Face of Boe is weird and makes no sense, while the good captain is a debonair swashbuckling sort of dude who rules in general and isn't a face in a jar.

I just started Doctor Who because of this thread and because I love Sherlock from the BBC so much. As Doctor Who and Sherlock are always named in the same category of great BBC series I decided to give it a try. And I am hooked! I started with the 2010 series and I love it to bits. The overall quality, the stories, the music and the overall time traveling concept got me almost as addicted as lastly just the ponies did.
A big thank you for this thread!

Yeah, that's a shame. I really liked Eccleston and could have done with him for a few more seasons. I've really liked all the new Doctors, they're all great in different ways.

That's the thing about The Doctor. People like The Doctor like how people like cars, it's more about which model you preferred. :gotcha:

Yeah, I really love Capt Jack and wish there was more of him. I got a couple of the Torchwood seasons and they just don't feel Doctor Who'ish. They're much more...serious.

You should check out Torchwood: Children of Earth. It's a 5-episode miniseries that they had for series 3, and Captain Jack is great in it. The story itself is pretty interesting too. It's kind of about people trying to deal with this crazy alien threat without the Doctor swooping in to save the day. The best parts (aside maybe from the Captain Jack/Ianto stuff) are the scenes of the politicians and bureaucrats arguing about stuff.

I haven't seen their series 4 miniseries, Miracle Day, because it didn't sound very good. It does have John de Lancie though, so maybe it's worthwhile :pinkieshrug:

Just reached this point too.

I have to agree with whoever said he was really good at showing the Doctor's anger at humanity's derpyness and from what I've seen of Tennant and Smith so far they don't or at least not as well.

Watched The Idiot's Lantern, The Impossible Planet, and The Satan Pit today.

Good stuff. I particularly liked how the Doctor demonstrated quite clearly that you do NOT mess with his companions, nor do you attempt to use them as hostages to ensure your own safety. Because either way, you're headed for a bad end, and it's only a question of which one of them will be the one to send you on your way.
