I dunno, I could see it going the other way. RD is the way she is because her dad was a (not literal) bum and didn't do much. Then, because of that, she always tried to be the best while growing up(first in class to get a CM) not to mention getting her bit of arrogance/boastfulness.Davyinatoga wrote: Now, Dashie's dad I could see being a military man, an Air Force flyer. Dash's dad is a nerdy engineer for the Cloudsdale cloud factory. He crunches numbers all day, wears extremely thick rimmed glasses, and get picked on by the floor workers.
Her mom is a hippie artist pacifist type who thinks sports create artificial divisions amongst young fillies and colts.

Applejack's parents were revolutionary radicals in a family and long line of landowners that owes its success to Celestia's patronage.
They're the black sheep of the family, and AJ grew up never knowing that "your ma and pa are looking at you from up there" can be a very literal expression.

Re: Spike Dies: Season 2 Info/Spoilers/Speculation Station
I would be surprised if at least one of the main cast doesn't come from a non-nuclear family. We know about Pinkie's family, and Twilight's totally suffering from Spoiled Only Child Syndrome. AJ appears to be being raised by her grandmother, which isn't that atypical of a modern family. If AJ's dad is alive, I imagine him being some sort of industrialist monster like Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood. I don't think Dash has a very good relationship with her folks. Not only did she drop out of school, she moved away from her hometown, and it doesn't seem like her parents came with her. Then again, Fluttershy moved too. Rarity's all moved out, but it seems like her folks are still in town and looking after Sweetie Belle.
To be honest, I'd be happy to see another single parent around. Or, god forbid, same-sex parents. I don't think I've seen a kids' show address that yet, and that really needs to change.

Re: Spike Dies: Season 2 Info/Spoilers/Speculation Station
I had actually thought about Fluttershy's dad being a Wonderbolt before too and I honestly love the idea.
I still get the feeling that Applejack's parents have passed on. I mean, they live with their grandmother, it's a family farm and no parents are ever seen, and they weren't even at the Apple Family Reunion. Plus the idea of AJ's hat being a gift from her daddy is so adorable it needs to happen.
I agree about Dash not having the best relationship with her parents. After dropping out of flight school, moving away, and never really looking back, it doesn't really seem like she would.
I could see someone having a single parent. If they wanted to teach a lesson about divorce maybe Rarity's parents could have a strained relationship and Sweetie Belle think it's her fault but Rarity comforts her about and helps her realize it isn't. Though that might a little too depressing for a show about candy colored ponies...
As much as we need to address same sex parents I doubt it's going to happen any time soon. We've come a long way with the acceptance of homosexuals, but I'm sure if they pulled that we'd have parents freaking out and lashing at Hasbro for "trying to turn our kids gay".

Wasn't there a huge kerfuffle a couple years ago when some PBS cartoon (I forget the name) showed a family with same-sex parents? I want to say it even got the show cancelled but maybe I'm misremembering. In either case, there's no way that Hasbro is going to want to risk any kind of backlash like that with one of their big franchises.DarkMatter wrote:As much as we need to address same sex parents I doubt it's going to happen any time soon. Yeah, it was "Postcards from Buster" or something like that, a spinoff of Arthur. It didn't get the show cancelled, but that episode was pulled from rotation.Killing Vector wrote: Wasn't there a huge kerfuffle a couple years ago when some PBS cartoon (I forget the name) showed a family with same-sex parents? Re: Spike Dies: Season 2 Info/Spoilers/Speculation Station
The sad fact of the matter is that no company is going to greenlight an episode of a kid's show that deals with (or even just mentions or acknowledges) same-sex parents. People would absolutely flip their shit, including ones who would normally claim to be supportive of gay rights.
We live in an age where open bigotry is not nearly as acceptable as it once was, but we haven't come anywhere close to actually dealing with the root problems behind it. The result is that there's a lot of cognitive dissonance where people know that it's not 'right' to discriminate, but they still don't like immigrants/homosexuals/poor people, which leads to some really strange rationalization when they're forced to actually face their prejudices. You better believe a company that puts same-sex couples in their children's show is going to be buried under a mountain of "I'm not homophobic, but gay people make me uncomfortable and I don't want my children to know about them."
Don't get me wrong, I'd be fucking ecstatic if Hasbro went ahead and took the risk anyway, but there's no way in hell they will any time soon. If we see it being addressed anywhere, it's going to be on a publicly funded program airing on PBS or something. (I vaguely remembered hearing about that happening already; good to see I wasn't just imagining things. Or maybe not so good, since they pulled that episode )

Yea there's no way in hell any station other then a 'gay station' already will do a 'Rarity has two mommies' thing. It's just a fact that or society flips its shit when they think of two dudes kissing or god forbid, lebians who aren't pornstars. Still, single parents are more acceptable, I'd kinda like there to be the typical kids show 'well we're split up but still friends' kinda divorce. I think Rarity's parents would work best for that really, her mom or dad lives in Ponyville while the other lives in Canterlot, and that's why Sweetie Belle is around sometimes and sometimes absent?
Hell I'd really love them doing a story that was like 'Sweetie tries to get the parents back together, gets explained that even though mom and dad are still friendly they just don't love eachother and it's really no one's fault', I've noticed a real bad trend in kids media being 'if you just try super hard your parents come back together' and that's a super unhealthy message!

Pack your bindle: Life as a hobo is the only solution.
Rarity is actually the youngest pony, and the apparent maturity and age is a gigantic show, because, well, Rarity the Unicorn.

Yeah, media handling of non-nuclear families hasn't been the best, really. Sad to say I can't think of a single show with a single parent where the other parent wasn't completely absent. There are thousands of kids who spend time with both their parents, and it saddens me to think that the media response to this has been 'welp, you're not normal.'

I think the best way the show could deal with same-sex parents would to just have it passively show two same-sex ponies with a filly, not even acknowledging it was anything different to call attention to, maybe even just in the background. This way kids watching will get the implication that it's normal.

The meet-the-parents theme is a pretty viable idea IMO, if a bit played out across the media. Still, if it had the ponies doing what they do best, I'd watch it and enjoy it, just like the rest of you lot.
And I would totally stop my "Jack is a background pony" nonsense if AJ had a father who was a big-time, industrialist "fat cat." Fortunately for this show and redundant ironics, that likely won't be happening.
I'm somewhat hoping for something like this, myself. As much as I love the show's breezy-easy plots you can (mostly) pick up and enjoy, I wouldn't mind a two-parter or two to mix up the normal flow, especially if they happen to be the season's premier and finale. Then again, I'm not exactly sure what they could entail to justify the length, and the fans seem more happy with current format past the pilot.Blarghalt wrote:I wonder if they're going to do anything special for the first episode of the second season, like a two-parter.I really want to see more of Canterlot; it seems like such a nice mountain citadel/capital city.
As for Luna's return for an episode before inevitably departing back into obscurity (probably), I hope it's memorable for ponies, and for having those ponies being awkward.
I want Fluttershy-introduction levels of awkwardness here. It is my investment.

That scene could've used a bit more building up to it, or at least a subtle change in direction. Perfectly plausible outcome in its own right, but when Twilight punctually makes that sole remark about how Rarity taught her the spell? Well, it comes off as a tad too convenient in regards to the rest of the plot.Henry Plainview wrote:That really makes perfect sense, I don't know why people complain about it so often...

To be honest I'm not quite sure how to feel about it. I agree that a forced Very Special Episode is a bad idea, but I think the point is more that these are things that can be addressed without making it a Very Special Episode. Actually, the way I see it, making it Very Special kind of defeats the purpose, since the whole idea is to show that these things are perfectly normal and you don't have to make a big deal out of it.rudecyrus wrote:Thank you, Redeye, for condensing my thoughts into a single chatlog. I love the show because of the characters (characters that are colorful ponies, keep in mind), and any attempt make A Very Special Episode About (insert issue here) would be cheap and jarring.
It's like, what if Mr. and Mrs. Cake were Mr. and Mr. Cake and that's just how it was and nobody acted any differently about it? They're not, of course, and the entire discussion is purely academic, but that's the kind of thing I think we need to see more of, not necessarily here but on television in general.
I agree that magical cartoon ponies aren't the best vehicle for these kinds of things, but I dunno, I think it's kind of cool that we can even sit here and say "man wouldn't it be great if..." about My Little Pony of all goddamn things, no matter how far-fetched or potentially ill-advised it is. Besides, it's not like anybody else is out there taking up the mantle.

Well they can dig randomly, maybe they found the highest concentration by accident and the density radiates outwards. I'll agree that doesn't really make sense, but the complaint usually seems to be that Twilight is Mary Sueing it up by suddenly knowing, but it seems obvious to me that an advanced student of magic would be able to do that, even if it's not as good as Rarity's natural talent because her head doesn't move.OpposingFarce wrote:Also it's implied that the Diamond Dogs don't have any way to find jewels on their own, so it doesn't even make sense that their lair is down the path with the most gemstones.
To get on topic, it would really make me happy if they came up with some bizarre explanation for why the gems are 4 feet underground and already cut. We're never going to get the one we want (Ponyville is built on the ruins of human civilization), but anything would be great because they are doing it even though they know the target audience doesn't care at all.

A very special episode ...
Dear Princess Celestia,
Where do little sisters come from?
Dear Child,
When a Momma pony and a Poppa pony love each other very much, but they don't love their prissy stuck up little daughter, they send in for a little sister, who is delivered by stork and comes ready to assemble in kit form with instructions, much like a couch from IKEA.
This little sister is your replacement, and they will love her far more than they will ever love you.
This animosity may be natural between siblings, but fighting it will only make your parents love you less.
Eventually you will be turned out of your house, and be left to fend for yourself against the cold and the wolves, so enjoy the time you have.
Sincerely,
Princess Celestia.

I guess this is more of a "I'd like to see this happen in S2" than speculation at this point, so I'll just add my thoughts.
-I might be the only one who really doesn't care if parents pop up. I rather the series focus more on the current relationships between the cast and how they grow and mature. If there must be a parent episode, I'd like to see Celestia's and Luna's parents.
-I'd like to see an episode where the friendship of the main cast gets tested. Right now it's in the beginning stages, where it's all hunky dory. But what happens when someone crosses a line they didn't mean to, or loss control of their emotions and physically react? I think it would make for a good episode and moral.
-Spike needs a solo episode. Chilling in Canterlot or something. Something without the main six.
-As much as I'd like an all music episode, I got a feeling it's not gonna happen, at least for S2. But it wouldn't be too much for a show within a show episode with an Opera right?
