The IRC Channel: #ponygoons @ irc.synirc.net

Note that a good IRC client, like PChat, will have a lot of these things automated for you. However, everty step in this tutorial is accomplishable through the command line.
1. Know your Server
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. The first and most important thing you need to know about IRC is how you're connected to others. It's not like MSN, where everything is centralized on a single server. Rather, it's a large collection of private networks. The first thing IRC will ask you is which server you want to connect to. SynIRC is pretty popular, but if it isn't selectable from the dropdown in whatever program you're using, manually input the server address: irc.synirc.net.
2. Your chat line is also your command line
Commands begin with '/' and are input into your chat line. They won't show up to other users, unless it's a whisper, which is accomplished with /<username> <message>. When instructions call for a command, type it into your chat line.
3. Know your Channel
IRC servers have many many many channels. The one we're interested in is #PonyGoons. To join into the channel, it's as easy as typing /join #PonyGoons (case insensitive)
4. Register your nick
Nickserv is an integral bot on many IRC servers. It allows you to bind a username to an e-mail and password. Pretty much, it introduces an ability to ensure everyone that the person with your username is actually you. It's dead easy to register. Just type /nickserv register <password> <e-mail>
5. Identify yourself
Just as step 4 isn't necessary for any session but your first one, this is necessary for any session BUT your first one. When you connect or change your nick, you need to identify yourself to the nickserv. Type /nickserv identify <password>
And that's it. There's more to discover, and as I stated before, a good IRC client will take care of ALL this crap for you. If you have any more questions, the Pony goons tend to be a fairly friendly and approachable lot.
Spoiler Rules for IRC
On IRC, spoilers may only be discussed in the #ponyspoilers channel only.
- Discussion of unaired spoilers is not permitted at any time in #ponygoons.
- Any spoiler / speculation discussion for unaired and future episodes should happen in #ponyspoilers.
- After midnight US pacific time on the day of airing, it is OK to discuss the day's episode in #ponygoons.
- While the episode is airing and during the day-of-airing, live reactions and discussion of that day's episode should take place in #ponyday. This is the official channel for day-of discussion. Once midnight pacific time passes, you don't have to use #ponyday anymore.
Rules on IRC are pretty much the same as the forum, without the grammar part. If in doubt? Listen to an op and don't ask for a ban.
