Since English doesn't have a gender neutral singular pronoun, "they" is probably your best bet- as neat as some of the derivatives are, unfortunately I doubt that they'll enter common usage anytime soon.
On the other hand, since "they" can also be plural, you can use it as an excuse to use the royal "we".
Voices are also an enormous part of what people use for gender cues. People will overlook a lot (for better or worse) depending on the voice.

There are already tons of nuances to the way Japanese pronouns are handled and I'm pretty sure there's at least one that's neutral.

So I just found out about that G+ bit. Oh dead that really bothers me. I mean, I've been trying to avoid G+ for so long, and the farthest I've gotten is using an account with as much fake info as I can, without having any "friends" or anything, so I can set that up to take anything, without it getting into my personal stuff and then sending that all out. And like you said Momar, I am so mad at them for blaming the victim in this! Saying they didn't understand it. Well, as everyone is saying, who understands it? It's so confusing, garbled and just a complete mess the way it's trying to shove into everything, I absolutely cannot stand it. Do they really have any idea what they're doing, or do they simply just not care at all?
And the worst part about it is, it's like complaints don't matter. They're never going to change anything because they're too big to care.

One time for an assignment, I was in a group that used a google doc for part of it, and I joined it without thinking... amusing as it was that they didn't know any 'Katelyn D.', I was pretty terrified about that and ended the conversation about it really quickly.
At the time, I thought it was just a hiccup. I didn't know they were this bad about it

My question is how Google gets that information suddenly in the first place. Billing records? What do they do for people who don't pay for the phone, phones paid by a spouse or shared account, etc?
Still don't understand why Google thinks it's okay to display something other than what the user wants... anywhere. Why yes, I want my YouTube to use my real life name and not my online handle!

Preview edit: This is in response to Westy, dammit people stop posting when I'm lazy and don't quote someone. You know how hard it is to edit in a quote on a phone?
As far as name goes, you have to give it to them. At least, for now. I'm sure they could cross reference information on my phone, that they clearly have some access to, with my attached Google account (which the phone won't work without) and put a name on it. But if they did that, I would probably start screaming and not stop until someone shot me with a tranquilizer dart.
And people give up their private personal info to them because they want access to some Google service that requires a working G+ account, which in turn requires a real name. I've tried being tricky with it, but they're very exacting about what they'll accept. No initials. Not even J. Smith or whatever. Their algorithm is kind of overboard, and there are stories of people with names like Bob Duck getting denied because it doesn't sound real enough for Google.

Just when you thought Dubai wasn't a shitty fucking place to visit, two transwomen were kicked out of a club in Dubai for having 'M' on their passports. Then when they complained to the police, they were arrested and had their passports seized for "imitating women."
Oh, and they'll be charged again if they go out on the streets, and they can't return home until their trial is over. It starts in March.

That's horrible. Seriously, no one should ever go to Dubai for anything. All I hear out of that place is horror stories about people getting arrested for the most ridiculous things. You couldn't pay me enough money to step one foot inside that country. They'd probably instantly slap a cuff around my ankle and haul me off to jail.

Re: The Gender and Sexual Minorities Thread II: So Many Wond
I was actually approached by a company offering to pay me to move to Dubai to work for them for 2 years. It was a tempting offer, as it is double my current salary, free room and board, and completely tax free. I'd have paid my debt off in a year.
But then I did my homework and found out that at the slightest sign of queerness they'd terminate me and my employer could seize my passport to essentially put me into indentured servitude. Don't live there. Don't work there. Don't even visit on business unless you work for a big multinational who they don't want to piss off, and there is literally no one else in the company that can go. Don't even connect flights in their airport.

I don't know if Oklahoma or Texas is better. A Texas school district recently told the family of a student who was getting bullied for being Buddhist that maybe the family should stop being Buddhist so that the student would stop getting bullied.
Sometimes I wish the Supreme Court and the Constitution was a big stick, and you could smack whoever was in charge in those states on the nose and go "No! No!". Like they're a bad dog.

Even if it goes anywhere, which it won't, it'll get smacked down lickity-split. Marriage is recognized as a human right under U.S. law, and while states have the power to regulate it, they don't have the power to ban it. Kinda like guns.

Oh, of course it won't go anywhere. Just the fact that one of my state lawmakers actually believes this enough to say it out loud and give an interview to the local news about it is amazing. The anti-marriage camp really has descended into self parody at this point.

We do have to acknowledge that this is a subset of Republicans, not all of them. However, as shown here, that subset will cause the whole party to get less respect. You can be Republican and still be progressive - logically speaking, being politically conservative means that you want government to stay out of people's business, it's just that subset does not apply that in terms of gay marriage, women having control over their own bodies and other issues.
As an outsider looking in, I'm refraining from commenting on how large that subset would appear to be, because seeing the worst from that subset is the main thing I see from the whole party.

Re: The Gender and Sexual Minorities Thread II: So Many Wond
Metapolitichat warning.
Unfortunately, the way that congressional districts have been gerrymandered, you would be pretty accurate to say that all Republican members of Congress, or at least the House, are in fact part of this subset. The situations can be even worse in individual states, where politics tend to be even more polarized and single-party-dominated. Not just the legislature but the entire executive branch and even the state judiciary (in partisan election states) will be dominated by one party, except maybe a switch-hit governor here or there.
The structural problem this creates for Republicans is that, with no possible way they can be challenged from the left in many districts, the only way for new blood to come in is by somebody even further right to challenge in the primaries. With districts already arranged to pack the hardest-of-hardcore conservatives into the decision-making positions, these primary challenges tend more and more to succeed, driving the Republican elected representation to the right without significantly changing the demographics of Republicans themselves - Joe Conservative is just saying "Hey, an even better candidate! Democracy in action!" But taken over the past two decades, that's exactly the conservativism-creep that's led to where we are today - with a national party drifting towards extremes and fundamentalism seemingly in defiance of standard "race to the middle" game-theory politics.
In the short-term, it worked very well. Long term, you get stuff like banning all marriage to spite the gays floated seriously.

Well, you know how it is. Deny the validity of gay marriage and eventually you'll be denying the validity of ALL marriage.
It's a slippery slope.
