Miners fine-tune that shit incredibly, so yes, all the time the best-case cost to mine has been at least a tiny bit under the expected return. The fundamental problem is the constant arms race to mine faster and thus use more power to do the same number of transactions, combined with the Fear-of-missing-out bubble pricing that keeps making it seem "worth it."

Used to be, but that line got crossed years ago. Mining is only profitable now if you're not paying for your electricity. Or if you're trying to evade currency controls by turning your local money into bitcoins via power bill.

Re: Garbage Dump Thread Episode (?) A New Dump
I mainly asked because for the first time ever I'm seeing actual commercials for mining hardware on YouTube. And I knew it had to be a rip-off; I was just curious if there was ever a time when it might not have been.

Re: Garbage Dump Thread Episode (?) A New Dump
Directly mining bitcoin is no longer cost-effective, even for big industrial installations. Negative ROI even if you resell the equipment after. That's what selling it is about - giant mining operations are selling off to break even or profit on the total investment. Dimes to dollars the big piles of ASICs and whatnot are from decomissioned large-scale Chinese mining installations.
The only profitable mining you can do with your own hardware involves mining altcoins (non-Bitcoin cryptocurrencies) like Ethereum, Litecoin, Ripple, or (lol) Dogecoin and then trading them for Bitcoin.
Other than being tradeable for Bitcoin, I have no idea what makes altcoins valuable. That's even less than you can say about Bitcoin.

But note: if the computing power of the Bitcoin network drops as people retire their mining ops, the difficulty will lower until unprofitable hardware becomes profitable again. Bitcoin mining seeks an economic equilibrium.

Anything is worth what someone else will pay for it.
Thus bitcoins aren't completely worthless since libertarians, drug dealers, and Wall Street speculators will pay entirely too much money for them

Re: Garbage Dump Thread Episode (?) A New Dump
IIRC most bitcoin mining now happens in large mining farms in China, where electricity is about 4.5Β’/kWh.
Which is then used for moving currency out of the PRC, since the PRC has extremely strict capital flight regulations and this is less expensive than washing it in a casino in Macau (the actual reason Macau casinos are so profitable)Void Chicken wrote: βSat Jan 13, 2018 12:16 amUsed to be, but that line got crossed years ago. Re: Garbage Dump Thread Episode (?) A New Dump
Actually, I had a thought just now. If you have solar panels on your roof and it more than covers your energy needs during peak daylight hours, mining bitcoin might legit be more profitable than selling the excess to the power company, because they offer so little compared to what they charge. Somebody should crunch the numbers on that.

Re: Garbage Dump Thread Episode (?) A New Dump
how long until it pays off the hardware cost? Can I assume bitcoin mining will make as much money over that time?
When it comes to having solar panels or wind turbines fitted to a home, I have a different idea. I wonder if it'd be a better plan to have your appliances be controlled by a computer that will switch them on when their power will only be drawn from solar power? The idea is that instead of selling power to the grid you buy as little power from the grid as possible.
Make your washing machine and dishwasher purely solar. Get a battery powered vacuum cleaner that charges only at peak solar power. Maybe there could be a slow water heater that pours into an insulated tank so that there's always hot water for tea but it's made using solar power.

You're describing Tesla's home lipo battery pack, except less convenient.

I didn't realise batteries had gotten this good.
Or so I hope. $3000 sounds affordable but it's not something you want to be paying every couple of years to replace the batteries should they get old. If replacement is an ongoing maintenance cost then it needs to be factored in.

Re: Garbage Dump Thread Episode (?) A New Dump
I've got myself so hyped about a game concept I want to make that I'm actually downloading unity to see if I can make a crude version of it.
The game isn't anything that other people are interested in, and goodness knows it'll be broken and buggy as hell, but I just have this really strong feeling like I have to get this game out of me and into the world.
The Brief of the game:
The player creates a team with drivers and race cars. Drivers from the player's team face against drivers from opposing teams in turn based 1v1 races. The cars can be modified with parts to alter their performance. The racers learn new moves that allow them to act in different ways during their turn in races. The racers gain experience levels that allow the player to choose which stats a racer upgrades. New drivers, moves, cars and parts are unlocked throughout the game, and the player combines these elements to build their own unique racing team.
In short it's like pokemon but instead of collecting monsters you're collecting cars and drivers. Instead of trying to reduce monsters to 0hp you're trying to get ahead in the race. Instead of every turn just being about how to reduce someone to 0hp, there will be environmental hazards like corners, jumps and oil spills that appear on certain turns and which must be prepared for in advance.

Re: Garbage Dump Thread Episode (?) A New Dump
Pff that'd be hilarious.
I'm going to steer clear of using any real world cars and racers, but there's room to drop in subtle references for sure. While it might sound dull to not have the cars people know and love, it also opens up the possibility of going full Redline/Hot Wheels/Wacky Races in the late game.
