PYF marketing silliness
to someone like me who overthinks things to death, marketing is often its own form of comedy. there is something about the overly enthusiastic and often absent-minded nature of people's efforts to sell things that i just keep finding fucking hilarious
for instance:
earlier today i noticed the "You can taste the quality" slogan on this box of microwave trash food and i just laughed for a good ~10 minutes thinking about it. there are so many ways to interpret that statement. "quality" as a noun doesn't necessarily mean "high quality" or "good quality" so uh, is this a "water is wet" kind of statement or are they like giving me permission to judge for myself or???
also:
this is my favorite commercial for reasons i don't even really understand. it's just like, bam. ring pop. you're cool now. forget hands-free candy, i want to visit a world where it's this easy to fascinate and hype up a crowd with my mundane belongings

Re: PYF marketing silliness
How about this nonsense:
The clunky corporate metaphor was the brainchild of Hyatt Hotels diversity and inclusion executive Tyronne Stoudemire, who appeared alongside Rauner on Wednesday at the downtown Chicago Thompson Center to discuss workplace diversity at a Black History Month event.
Enlisting Rauner as his lanky magician’s assistant, Stoudemire, who is black, poured a glass of milk to represent the white men who lead most organizations (including, um, the state of Illinois).
“This chocolate syrup represents diversity,” Stoudemire said, before squirting a healthy dash of brown syrup that immediately sank to the bottom of the glass.
“When you look at most organizations, diversity sits at the bottom of the organization,” Stoudemire continued. “You don’t get inclusion until you actually stir it up.”
Rauner then stirred the syrup into the milk, turning it brown, and he took a sip and pronounced it good.
“Diversity is the mix, and inclusion is making the mix work,” Stoudemire said, concluding his analogy.

I'll be helping vote out Rauner in November. Unfortunately his opponent is most likely gonna be another stereotypical corrupt Illinois politician soooo...

I think everybody's seen this by now, but I'm always fascinated by the Winstons cigarette commercials featuring the Flintstones. The show was aimed at adults, so it's no surprise it was sponsored by a company making an adult product, but it's still a fascinating relic to me, from a time when cigarettes were much more accepted:

Diversity is like chocolate milk: it's approved insofar as it tastes good to white men in power.

Re: PYF marketing silliness
I just saw some razors. They were topcare triple blade.
The thing is, they had one for men and one for women
the difference was the one for women was purple and had the words "triple blade" in cursive.
Otherwise they were exactly the same, I checked the back of the packages just to make sure.

Re: PYF marketing silliness
Razors are stupidly expensive. Get yourself a safety razor handle like your granddad had, cause you can buy 100 good replacement blades for like £10. It's a good compromise where it's cheaper than whole disposable razors but also you don't have to continually sharpen and strop the edge like you would with a cut-throat razor.

Will draw blood guaranteed. If you've shaved with our razor and you're not even razor burned, we'll give you your money back and a new set of replacement heads. If you don't want to shave with them, why not sew them into your favourite black trenchcoat to show everyone how literally edgy you now are!

In actuality the chances decrease with practice until they reach a negligible amount.

Re: PYF marketing silliness
Do PSAs count here, or should that be its own thread?
In any event, I found a bunch of anti-smoking plugs that the National Film Board of Canada did. They're pretty trippy, as you'd expect:
When I shared this one on Facebook, somebody who works for a radio station in Canada told me that he knows the guy who narrated the tag at the end. He's a smoker himself

The second one feels like it's actually glorifying cigarettes, with the guy willing to blow himself up to get a puff.SlateSlabrock wrote: ↑Mon Mar 26, 2018 12:42 amCompared to the lady with the tracheotomy, I'm not sure any of these goofy cartoons are really getting the message across...

This one wins the award for the most bizarre:
The message is that you can cheat your government of tax money by not smoking...in a commercial that was paid for with tax money

I love these sorts of commercials. I always try to put myself in the mindset of whoever developed it and wonder if they had fun making it, because sometimes they're just so oddly surreal that I can't help but feel like someone put an awful lot of (potentially unneeded) time into the end result.
These two are among my favorites:

Oh yeah, definitely agree! I wouldn't be surprised if the animators were allowed to do whatever they wanted, as long as the message was "don't smoke".Auxiliatrix wrote: ↑Wed Mar 28, 2018 9:35 pmI love these sorts of commercials. This one also stands out. Part of me wonders if this was part of his community service for his arrest:

Re: PYF marketing silliness
It was.
NYT wrote:The centerpiece of the plea agreement between prosecutors and Mr. Reubens's lawyers is the actor's pledge to devote at least 75 hours to community service, making an anti-drug videotape that will be made available to television stations and schools. Mr. Reubens agreed to write and produce the program and to pay its costs out of his own pocket.

I never seen this series of commercials from Pizza Hut before, called "The Pizza Head Show"
I looked it up, and yes, this was made by the same guy who did those "Mr. Bill" segments for Saturday Night Live
