It's a good way to force a draw in timed formats I suppose

Sweet. My kinda bullshit.Orange Fluffy Sheep wrote: βThu Mar 22, 2018 9:57 pmStoneforge Mystic is the first and so far only banned from a format with a caveat. The event decks were marketed as Standard-ready out of the box, and War of Attrition had two copies of Stoneforge Mystic in it. For the duration of Stoneforge Mystic's ban, it was legal if one had an unmodified War of Attrition list.

You can't pay life if it would put you at 0 or less. It's against the rules to off yourself via Mana Confluence.
City of Brass, to contrast, deals damage as a triggered ability, so you can tap that as your final action and welcome the grave!

Pretty sure you can though, cause i remember hearing about someone messing up and losing to fetching with Worship on the battlefield. You do still have that 1 point of life to pay with, even if does kill you ^^Orange Fluffy Sheep wrote: βSun Mar 25, 2018 2:20 pmYou can't pay life if it would put you at 0 or less. What you can't do is use stuff like that when you're at 0 or less life, for whatever reason that may happen

Luis Scott-Vargas did this to Magic The Gathering Online. It doesn't handle an infinite loop of triggered abilities very well.
It looks like it was actually his opponent that did the combo, and he just let it happen because he wanted to see it

Every card that involves coin flips is red or colorless, except Tavern Swindler because gambling your vital fluids for more fluids with a sexy lady is more black than red I guess.Gloomy Rube wrote: βMon Mar 26, 2018 7:24 pmAlso can I double dip some more strange mechanics trivia? Chance Encounter is an alternate win condition based on coin flips, and it came in the set with the only good coin flipping card for raking in luck counters for its entire time in standard.
Krak's Thumb came in just as it went out, there's probably a couple of salty chance encounter goobers out there.
Coin flipping doesn't actually require flipping a coin. You can roll a die and call odds or evens, or any other random event with a 50/50 outcome.

Coalition Victory was the first win condition card printed.
Well, the first one in a standard, tournament-legal Magic expansion. The Cheese Stands Alone in the comedy set Unglued was the first.
According to Mark Rosewater, Barren Glory was once a straight reprint of The Cheese Stands Alone. Future Sight could've been even more wild.

I'd like to give some rabbit trivia but Magic's four rabbits aren't actually interesting.
uh
Doomed Dissenter kinda looks like Obama
does that count
uh
Loxodon Warhammer is the only pre-future sight card to have lifelink, due to its 10th edition printing using the word. Between Future Sight and the M10 rules change, Lifelink and the older Spirit Link wording were basically identical, being triggered abilities. M10 changed lifelink to a result of damage that didn't use the stack, and every older effect went back... except Loxodon Warhammer, as it was printed with the word Lifelink on it.
Yes, that's a 10th edition Spirit Link. Don't ask me.

The Zodiac animals are a rare example of a 12-card cycle, corresponding to the animals of the Chinese zodiac. All of them have a land walk of some kind or another, except for the dragon who doesn't even have flying, so it just has regular walking I guess.
Vizzerdrix, Kezzerdrix, and Jackalope Herd were all originally printed as beasts, presumably due to antiquated prejudice against bunnies* however, in these enlightened times they've been allowed to reveal the truth we all knew all along.
*actually because they weren't giving things multiple creature types as much and beast was more likely to be mechanically relevant

Also, there's Tamiyo, who kinda borrows heavily from the Moon Rabbit mythology

At the beginning of your upkeep, if you have 200 or more cards in your library, you win the game.

Finally I found something, it just took over a week.
Conversion uses the same art as one of the plains but with a mountain in it.
Hard to tell how much of it is laziness and corner-cutting and how much is that Alpha's production was kind of touch-and-go.

Battle of Wits is legal in Commander and its variants, even though decks are restricted to 100 cards exactly.Aria Genisi wrote: βThu Mar 29, 2018 2:52 pmAt the beginning of your upkeep, if you have 200 or more cards in your library, you win the game.

It and the previously mentioned Chance Encounter are part of a cycle that was broken up between the entire Odyssey block, with Mortal Combat showing up in the black-dominated Torment and white and green Test of Endurance and Epic Struggle in Judgment, which emphasized black's enemy colors.

Ok now that I've mourned a vampire tribal aggro deck,
Plainswalk is exceptionally rare, only appearing on 4 creatures with one enchantment granting it.
Legends introduced the first creature with plainswalk, Righteous Avengers, and two hosers, Lord Magnus and Great Wall.
The Plainswalk enchantment, Aysen Highway, costs 3 white mana itself, making it not a very good idea, since it means the opponent's creatures also have plainswalk.
You know, besides costing 6 and doing nothing by itself and not even being one-sided.

I wanted to do something about format legality but there was nothing interesting enough since I already blew my load on Treasure Cruise.
Rise of the Eldrazi manages to have a card and its strict upgrade in the same rarity and color.
