For what it's worth I like your opening a heck of a lot better already
I tried! My consolation prize is that, no matter where life takes me, I will never have to live with the shame of having written “Nerd Porn Auteur”

That revised opening was much better, Madeline! Easy to follow and understand what the mood should be with no vagueness.

The podcast that was linked earlier, where the RiffTrax folks read the book, mentioned that there is a scene with characters "dressed in 80's styles, dancing 80's dances". And they play a game where they rapidly go back and forth mentioning what specific details you could include if people were dressed in "80's styles". The book isn't even about the author's nostalgia: he's leaning heavily on yours in filling in the gaps he hasn't written.

I saw the movie and it was pretty bad.

My favourite thing is how ultimately none of it matters in the real world. The world's still a mess, the bad guys have only been mildly inconvenienced, and while the protagonist has endless resources now he has no plans to achieve anything with them.

Seriously, after 2 and a half hours of movie the end result is that they start tuning off their MMO for 2 days a week so people can go outside a little. Oh, and they cut off the debt slavery centres so they can't farm MMO gold anymore... So I guess they'll just go back to good old fashioned slavery since that's apparently legal now.

It's very meta in a way, their world's a fucking mess and instead of fixing it here they are wasting time on a bunch of regurgitated pop culture garbage. Makes u think

Another problem with the movie is none of the characters are interesting at all (except the guy who made the game and starts the contest. I actually enjoyed all the flashback scenes with him, and I think I would have liked Simon Pegg's character more if we had actually gotten more of his character).

I clicked on this thread and read these sentences, and for some reason my brain snapped to the MLP Movie when I read "the movie," so I was really confused for a bit there :-I

Just saw the movie (in 3D IMAX because that's how I roll), and it's a decent bit better than the book. Still nothing great, but at least it has decent pacing and the challenges were a hell of a lot better than the dreck described in the book at some points. One to watch for the visuals more than the plot.

EDIT: The stupidest trivia was that the creator of the OASIS had as favorite FPS Goldeneye in Slappers Only mode as Oddjob. Which is a terrible thing to like.

EDIT 2: The other stupid thing is that the entire cast of main characters/friends all happen to live in the same relatively tiny area.

"My favorite FPS is where I'm half the size of the other characters in a melee-only situation that lasts a long time and my attacks do the same damage as everyone else's."

seems like a dork to me, imo

I'd never heard of this meme before and I was momentarily shocked because I recognized his name and signature and that board style looks exactly like how the Ozy and Millie fan forums looked at the time.

Went and saw this because Dormouse was bored. Entered expecting to hate it, left having quite enjoyed a classic Spielberg movie that felt like it was made in the eighties.

I'm not invested in seeing this at all but I'm glad to hear it at least improves on the book and leaves out a lot of iffy shit so win-win for everyone involved

As far as that post-credits segment goes: Somebody else compared the writing to those scenes in Bill and Ted where he's just like "OK, remember to go back in time and set up a trap for the bad guys" and then they spring a trap that wasn't there a moment ago. Except that was funny and clever and actually made sense because they have a time machine and can do that.

I heard Simon Pegg was not just in the film, but also a bit off. Is that true? I still haven't seen it and don't quite plan to. :pinkieshrug:

He was barely in it, and it just seemed a waste of a good actor.

I finally watched this movie with some friends.

They tried to make the female lead unattractive but all that Hollywood could muster is a beautiful person in a cardigan with a pink mark on her face. Because of this my friends and I spent the whole movie screaming "IT'S HIDEOUS, KILL IT" and the like whenever she appeared on screen, and I think that was the main enjoyable part of the experience.

I was also hugely disappointed that the holy hand grenade didn't sing "hallelujah" before it exploded. If you're going to make a nerd movie about the nerd fantasy of being able to use obscure nerd knowledge to achieve a nerd victory, you really need to get details like this right.

Also more of a biker thing than a nerd thing: Kaneda's bike from Akira is electronic. He talks in the movie about its coils and it makes whirring noises that sound like a jet engine. Hearing it roar like a V-Twin in this movie was another complaint, but I did hear them briefly mention that it's a skin for another in game bike model?

Look, you can't expect all the little details to be correct in a story where the main character has to recite all of Grail perfectly.

Tekwar sure is an adventure of some sort, somehow.

I was burning through old episodes of 372 Pages when the gym was still open, but The Mister was a real struggle, and Truckin' Through Time even moreso.
