SP1: Best Gift Ever

Post by Wayoshi (?) » Mon Oct 22, 2018 8:57 pm

As the ponies all prepare for another Hearth’s Warming, families come together to celebrate the big holiday. The Pie family arrives in Ponyville and Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Applejack, Rarity and Rainbow Dash are ready for the big day... but Princess Twilight Sparkle doesn’t have time to celebrate! With her new school taking up her time and Shining Armor, Cadance and Baby Flurry Heart coming to visit, Twilight is behind on her to-do list. She hasn’t even begun to shop! Luckily her friends are here to help! Instead of one gift for every pony, they decide to do a Hearthswarming Helper and give just one gift to the pony whose cutie mark they pull out of Applejack’s hat. But now, the pressure’s on to find the one perfect gift to make each pony’s holiday special. By seeking help from their friends all over Equestria, the Mane 6 and Spike are each hoping to find the best gift ever. With their hopes high, they set out on a magical adventure to make each pony’s Hearthswarming bright.
This thread is for discussion of this one-hour special. It airs at 1:00pm US EDT on Saturday, October 27!

Official preview clips and images are okay to post, as is speculation about the special.

Talk about going out with bang! A most delightful episode to cap the season. There were many great scenes, but I especially enjoyed seeing Shining Armour and Princess Cadence interact while helping to save the day.

I thought it was a very nice special. Some good cameos form the students, Trixie and Starlight, and Derpy once again in a speaking role. I don't know if we needed another Flim Flam scheme, but AJ and Fluttershy took care of business there. Always good to see Shining Armor, Cadence, Flurry Heart and the rest of the Pie sisters too.

Spike's song at the end might have stolen the show. I liked the scenes with Discord and Fluttershy as well.

The montage at the end was really nice. I can't believe I missed the scene with Thorax and the other Changelings the first time around. Heartwarming. Image

Just learned this was going up today and caught a YT upload. Absolutely fantastic - better than maybe half of S8 even. It really shows how much they can pack into a double-length episode compared to a measly 22 minutes once they have some set-up time to play with.

The references also were sublime - I'll have to rewatch to catch all of them but off the top of my head these are the ones I got:

- The three ponies with things to sell when Spike is going down the street looking for Rarity gifts: the Cheese Sandwhich-like pony in an elf costume is referencing Will Ferrel from the film "Elf", the old mare with the necklace is I think the homeless pidgeon lady from Home Alone 2, and the guy with the Rarity made of smaller Rarity statues...I actually don't know but he HAS to be a reference to somebody.

- The ninja costumes Discord and RD wear are straight up GI JOE! RD is Storm Shadow while Discord is Snake Eyes.

- The reindeer themselves were, shockingly, THE GHOSTS from A Christmas Carol! One knows the past, one knows the future, and one stays in the present. Of course, they already did a straight up Christmas Carol adaptation episode where it was AJ, Pinkie, and Luna as the ghosts outright, but given what little time the Reindeer actually have the fact they pretty much just describe EXCLUSIVELY that dynamic before giving Pinkie the gift and then basically only show up at the end, it has to be a reference.

- I don't know who the ponies behind AJ and Fluttershy are, when they're riding back on the train, but it's obvious they're a reference to something.

I also have to believe that there was a reference to A Wonderful Life in here somewhere but it slipped past me.

Oh, and Twilight's PUDDING face. That needs to be an emote like NOW.

It's John Candy and Steve Martin from 'Planes, Trains & Automobiles' (who have been referenced in the show before).

This could have been the series finale it was so complete. Almost everyone who was anyone got at least a cameo. And EXTENDED DERPY SCENE. WITH DIALOGUE. It was saccharine but in a good way to anyone adult who celebrates Christmas or something like it.

This is how I felt. I was ready to be jaded, especially after one of the busiest and most tiring weeks of my life, but by the end I think I shed a tear at it all. Even after all the problems and the fuckups of life and society, true friends and family are still there for you.

I wish now that I could've seen in action the writing process for this episode. I came away thinking this felt more grown-up than a lot of stories FiM has done, that the vast majority of holiday activities aren't supposed to go wrong as we show them to kids, but maybe kids who watched this would've taken more away from things like Spike's gift. Perhaps this episode seriously did manage to be "for" everyone after all.

As Hasbro gets toys out for Christmas, I think it'll be worth watching to see if any of them come with Best Gift Ever DVDs (or digital download codes, or whatever the kids these days use) packed in. The episode felt like it was a bit light on world and character lore, like it'd be a good (re)introduction to the series for those who get pony toys for Christmas this year. Or maybe Hasbro will post it on YouTube and rely on views of it to sell toys?

Oh wow, that was a fun special. Everyone got their chance to shine, and some interesting new things were introduced, like those reindeer Pinky met (is that the first time we've seen any sentient deer in the show?).

Also, jokes about capitalism with those shoddy dolls, in a show that's meant to promote a toy line :-I "COMMERCIALISM IS THE GREATEST GIFT OF ALL" (Discord blows it up)

All in all, definitely among the best from the show

EDIT: How long until somebody does a "Steamed Ham" joke with the reindeer Pinkie met? (if you don't get it, say their names fast)

One thing I found interesting is that Flim and Flam were both wearing disguises, evidently even before they knew Applejack and Fluttershy were there. Their scams have been exposed so many times at this point that they had to resort to that.

Having any type of pony with no standard opening is fucking weird.

Seeing the opening song makes me realize just how much this show has changed. Now Hearth's Warming is basically Xmas, much less difference than before. Have to say, I'm a bit upset about that.

Spike was in full bland Rari-love mode. The dude's got wings now, I'd like to see some growth in this regard as the show reaches its sunset.

Conversely to the above, Rarity was actually pretty good in this episode!

Wow Discord was an underhanded dick, who woulda thought? Not as bad as other cases, but still.

Flim & Flam make me snooze at this point. They've come back plenty of times and aren't going to learn. Give me more Pistachio instead. EDIT: Or to go along with "bad" characters showing up again and again, where the hell is my Diamond Tiara follow-up to Crusaders of the Lost Mark episode?

I kinda liked the idea that Derpy was still perfectly intelligent despite the strabismus. I guess you can say she was just an airhead here, but it came across as a bit too dumb to me.

Just because you call out your own Reindeer Ex Machina doesn't make it any less lazy, Vogel. Although I can buy in Equestria, reindeer might as well have the same powers as a Santa would.

Ordinarily I would've been put off by this too, but I realized that this most likely isn't a normal episode. If this really was made under the circumstances I described earlier, then this understandably can't lean as heavily into the backstory of how Hearth's Warming is also Equestria's national day. If the point is to introduce the show's characters and hook new viewers into the series, what's better: something lore-heavy with lots of references to past events or something easily relatable that evenly features all the main characters?

What we got was a little more shallow than usual (though not on the shallowness level of EqG, at least), but still a good story. It's definitely a reminder that the show's purpose, ultimately, is to sell toys. But at least that's something that has never changed.

I mean, it doesn't have a season number as I put in the title. We have a storyboard preview and it was "SP1". So yes, the opening song was meant to be a replacement. It's still weird when you associate DA THEME SONG with this show for 195 times and counting.

I'm not sure this was really made as an "introductory episode" in mind, but maybe? There was zero of Starlight, but also zero of CMC.

This episode is being released as a stand alone DVD, and from the release date, they want it on store shelves for the entire Christmas season. That implies they're aiming for the "buy a random Christmas DVD for the kids" parents, who they hope would get it regardless of if they or their kids have seen the show.

That reminds me, Tangled: the Series had an episode that was released stand alone as a holiday special, Queen for a Day. Except that while it's a fantastic story, it was a terrible stand alone episode, because it heavily ties into the season story and has a depressing ending.

I knew there was some free pony DLC on my DVR, and I had decided to save it for a rainy day.

This evening’s a little drizzly, so ... :)

BEST GIFT EVER, a holiday special apparently

• And capitalism’s in full bloom in Ponyville! :money:
• Oh God, Marble’s heart is breaking. :sweetiefrown:
• Pony mittens are adorable.
• And Spike’s winter hat contoured around his spines.
• Spike’s not-a-cutie-mark symbol is a dragon wing, seemingly. I guess getting his wings was basically his rite of adulthood, so that works.
• AJ’s got everyone’s number this episode. :eyebrow:
• So Twilight and Pinkie got each other? I’m calling a “Gift of the Magi” twist for this one.
• Remember when Yakyakistan was this long grueling journey, and now it’s like a casual day trip?
• Ha ha, and Dash just comes out and asks her pony, amazing.
• GHOST CANDLE
• This is really fun so far. I missed pony. :flutterunsmith:
• a statue of Rarity made from smaller sculptures of Rarity
• I take back what I said earlier. EVERYONE has EVERYONE’S number this episode. It’s amazing.
• Oh there’s the source of the PUDDING emote.
• Ha ha reindeer, of course.
kick
• Still feels like Flim & Flam made a profit from this. :ponder:
• Gotta have those Steve Martin and John Candy ponies!
:glare: don’t do that
• TWILINANAS
• Ah yes, the classic pudding-Winterzilla dilemma, from The Odyssey if I recall rightly.
• There’s Starlight and Trixie!

This episode made me happy. :good:
