Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
Still, to actually shoot a whole scene that's not only not in the movie but would be anachronistic by a factor of half a century if it was? All to trick people into thinking it takes place in the present day and not 50 years ago because... marketing thinks they'll get more butts on the seats that way?
Oh, and also Sheeran at one point tries to convince Patel's character to change the name of "Hey Jude" to "Hey Dude", which does not strike me as something someone in the '60s would ever say.

the period piece version is the one that was scrapped in favor of a modern film
whether or not the beatles are the best band ever tm is not really the point of the story as far as i can tell, the vibe i get is its about achieving success via plagiarism and what that does to a person, and/or imposter syndrome
the beatles are the best ever conceit is just to give him something that is perceived by the modern audience as a 'sure thing' and also because its a british production

Can I just say that I really hate people who go "why are you outraged at X when Y is happening?".
They DO know you can be upset at multiple things at once, right? I'm going to assume people who say this can't walk and chew gum at the same time.

It's just a very convenient way to ensure you never ever have to do anything about anything, because whatever's happening there's always something worse going on.

Well, there was an incident where a member of the local Jewish community chewed out McCartney because they interpreted 'Hey Jude' as a reference to the German word for Jew, rather than as the given name. They were a holocaust survivor IIRC so understandably it was something of a sensitive point.
Regardless, I think Hey Jude would be a good song regardless of historical context, probably a few others as well. Source: I was born in 1982 and I don't give a shit about 97% of the Beatles discography but I will na na na na na na na na so hard when it comes on the car stereo, you don't even know

A timeline where George Harrison never gets rich enough to finance Monty Python’s Life of Brian is one I want no part of.

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
The weird part is that Life of Brian would probably still exist in this universe. The idea seems to not necessarily be that the Beatles never existed, but that nobody has any record or memory of them existing. After all, there's an argument to be made that if the Beatles hadn't existed to begin with, then the world we have today and the music we have today would be different to a noticeable extent.Mechanical Ape wrote: ↑Tue Feb 19, 2019 9:07 pmA timeline where George Harrison never gets rich enough to finance Monty Python’s Life of Brian is one I want no part of.
Also, in regards to the whole "the Beatles are the greatest band of all time" argument, we don't know for sure that people will enjoy every single one of the "new" Beatles songs, because for the most part, the trailer seemed to focus on the commercial "hits" rather than, say, some of the stuff off The White Album or "deep cuts" from their first few albums. I'd also refer to what Ghost of Ember said about the film's point potentially being about the "plagiarism" aspect.
I think the film could be fun.

It has to be better than Bohemian Rhapsody, because I was unaware just how bad that movie was until this morning. Highlights: Rami Malek isn’t awful I guess but he seems very bored and jaded, rapid cross cutting to hide the fact that a bunch of people sitting around a table isn’t exciting, and every biopic cliche in the book like it’s a Simpsons parody

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
I didn't see it myself (for a number of reasons), but I was, originally, puzzled why it was nominated for "Best Picture", as the critical score wasn't particularly high and I know that the Academy doesn't tend to pick films out of sheer short-term popularity. However, seeing that the screenwriter behind the film (Anthony McCarten) is the same screenwriter behind Darkest Hour and The Theory of Everything, and that both of those films are biopic movies that were not only nominated for "Best Picture", but also featured a clear "Best Actor" contender, I think the decision makes a little more sense. Bohemian Rhapsody, from a pure outside perspective, looks exactly like the type of film the Academy would love.Madeline wrote: ↑Thu Feb 21, 2019 7:39 pmIt has to be better than Bohemian Rhapsody, because I was unaware just how bad that movie was until this morning. Nonetheless, I think Yesterday is definitely trying something much different than Bohemian Rhapsody, and that there will, likely, be a lot more opportunities for this film to be creative and interesting (as opposed to having to adapt real life events into a "three-act structure").

Imagine if Ask Jeeves had become hugely successful, and went on to launch their own brand of home assistant Alexa thingy. We'd have people around the world literally giving orders to "Jeeves."

oh gosh I remember xiao xiao, there were so many of those movies, and like, a couple games too? all based on these stick figures doing fighting game moves and stuff. It was so weird, 'cause it was one of the most popular things on the internet for a while.

I was way into stick figure and sprite-based fighting cartoons on Newgrounds back in the day. I honestly still think that plenty of them still have great choreography, even if the creator wasn't able to come up with much art on their own.

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
At the convention I'm going to, Disney story artist and animator Floyd Norman is going to be a guest. I was thinking about how he worked on the "Fat Albert" special that came out BEFORE the TV show, and the crazy production that was. The clips I've seen of it looked real neat, too.
Then I realized that, given what happened with the character's creator, "Fat Albert" is pretty much the one nostalgic property that will NEVER, EVER be revived ever again

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
Anyone else remember LiveJournal? Remember how they had a feature where you could have more than one avatar at a time so you could pick which one to use for any given post or comment? So you could match the mood of your post and not be stuck attaching a picture of Rainbow Dash laughing to an angry rant or whatever.
I haven't thought about that in years, but now that I do, it's really weird to me that no other social network or forum engine has replicated this feature. It's the kind of thing one kind of expects to spread and become a standard once people get used to it.
Another thing they did was that whatever theme you set up your blog to use, your feed would display in the same style. Which probably did a lot to dissuade people from using particularly obnoxious custom themes.

Musical question ...
Is the fadeout dead? It seems like I don’t hear songs that end that way anymore. If so, what killed it?

It's boring and really doesn't leave people satisfied. People remember the last thing they hear, and if it's got a succinct punch, it's a lot more rewarding than just a slow fadeout during a loop.Mechanical Ape wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2019 2:28 pmMusical question ...

It's one of the first things I learned not to do when studying film scoring. The goal is to evoke emotion and fadeouts don't.

The only thing that saddens me about fadeouts leaving is that means no more of those goofy fake endings where the song fades out then fades back in just to be silly.

That’s such a sensible answer, it’s almost disappointing. Like I was hoping for some music industry conspiracy behind it all.Octavia wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2019 4:00 pmIt's boring and really doesn't leave people satisfied. Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
I was going to wonder why nerd shit is so expensive, but then I remembered it’s because nerds will happily pay inflated price tags for things.
For example I’d love to own this because it’s not just 1984 served up on a plate yet again
but it costs 320 fuckin dollars even if you import directly, it’s still absurd. I can’t afford the normal retail ones any more, not when the prices keep going up and the money I can get has to be spent on necessities, not toys. The collectible ones are now in the LEGO realm of crazy prices. Hasbro just went “yeah, let’s just milk the middle aged dudes with six figure tech jobs before we go out of business. they’ll pay whatever and kids don’t buy toys”
There are diecast TF figures that don’t even transform that cost over a grand now
I kinda want to punch anybody who can blow that money on a single toy and not even feel it
How about donating that money to a food bank or a shelter, instead

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
I've been reading about this sort of thing recently. I put off my required freshman English writing class until this semester (technically good advice for registration purposes, but it becomes boring as hell when I have to learn about something I already know how to do) and for the paper we have to work on all semester, I chose to write about the expected value of MTG booster packs (which is why I've been posting about that game lately). The conclusion I come to is that even though the cards in a pack aren't typically worth the cost of the pack, people still buy them because cracking packs is fun and there's value to the cards other than their market price as collector's pieces. Still, what that leaves out is the fact that there's no other option in this game than to buy the cards from WOTC, unless you're going to risk buying counterfeit cards from China or something.
