Yona episode!

She can do better than Sandbar.

Moral prediction: Don't be a pony, be a yak (or be yourself in the case of Yona).

Maybe it'll be a yak interpretation of a traditional pony dance.
It involves smashing pumpkins.

This episode was awful. The Mane 6 should know better than to do what they did this episode. The shameful thing is that it all actually worked until cliche dress hijinx messed things up...

Maybe Twilight should have known better than to try to bring this to the school? the Young Six were all not enthused by being left out.

The episode definitely felt extremely cliche, not one of my favorites this season.

Rarity song tho ;-)

I didn't think it was too bad, despite the obvious "be yourself" message. I'm always up for a student episode and there were some pretty good faces. I thought it was nice of Sandbar to ask Yona to the dance. Image

Pygmalion, but with more property damage.

Highlights for me were Rarity's many new expressions (with some wonderful performances by Tabitha, as per always), the Mane 6's glee as Yona improved, and of course Silver Stream's eyebrow waggling.

Yona is best Yak. Episode was cute but more for likable characters than anything inherent in the episode. The Mane Six and any sort of ball don't seem to mix though. Disaster happens.

I found this episode to be harmless enough. Katrina Salisbury can do a pretty good Rarity impression. This is one of those weird episodes that kinda suffer from being in the final season, though. They just set up a romantic angle between two characters, but it'll probably never come up again due to the writing process of the show. It makes the development ring a little hollow.

It was pretty lightweight, but a good source of humorous faces and screenshots.

I don't think the Mane 6 did anything wrong. It's a pony tradition and they thought Yona wanted to learn those traditions. And for the most part, they did. Wasn't really until the end that they seem to try and force in the change-who-you-are lesson.

I liked it. Yona was a lot of fun in this episode.

Twilight did a really crappy job making the non-ponies feel welcome.

Celestia did do a great job teaching Twilight how to throw a party though.

Gotta say I didn't really care much about this one. Not horrible, but both yak episodes and high school episodes rub me the wrong way in general because they're always predictable, clichéed stories we've seen a million times before. I like when the pony show can put a different spin on their lessons or excel at humor, and this one didn't do that.

That's not to say that it was a bad lesson, but aside from the song in the middle, I could basically tune out until the last five minutes to find out how they resolve the predictable problem, and the My Fair Lady gloss didn't save it for me.

The weirdest thing I noticed in the episode is the implication that Yona's yak speech patterns are a cultural thing, rather than a language barrier. But I'm probably just over thinking things. :-I

First of all, I'd like to say this episode was a good depiction of completely unintentional racism, and I was particularly glad there wasn't any deliberate pressure on Yona to make her fit in; I was worried Rarity in particular would be thrown under the bus for this. Instead, it came from unintentional pressures like the posters and trophies only having ponies and Yona's own efforts. However, this still continues the theme of the Mane Six not actually being good teachers.

The song was good. It reminds me a lot of "A Kirin's Tale". Similar to "Becoming Popular" back in season 2, it was kind of awkward going from Rarity's talking to singing voice, especially with Rarity going back to talking at one point in the song. Anyway, it's nice having a Yona song.

Well, the blushing makes it official. Sandbar X Yona time.

Overall, decent episode.

Yes, six weeks later I finally watched this one! Rarity being Rarity + Yona hoof-fingers were the highlights for me. Also liked the little character moments for the rest of the Mane Six, plus Angel, minus Twilight who was just bland authority figure, though nice timing on the anti-splatter shield.

I like that the whole "fitting in" thing was entirely Yona's wish and the ponies were just trying to fulfill the thing she said she wanted. (Though SigmasonicX has a great point about the subtle, unintentional pressure to conform and pony-ize.) And I liked that it wasn't 20 minutes of failure; the fact that Yona actually succeeded in learning those skills was a good twist. Then the writers said, how can we make her fail anyway? since they remembered they had a third act to write.

So the ending was kind of bland for me but I did enjoy, like, the first 85% of it so that's a B+!

Yona and Sandbar are super cute. There's something nice about how he stood by her and cheered her up. Image

My regard for Yona increased with this episode.
