I came to this sudden realization:
Funko Pop figures are today's form of garden gnomes in essence.

except worse because you can't even put them in the garden
I mean you can but they will look shittier than even the most kitsch of garden gnomes

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
I wish I understood why Funko Pops are even a thing. Like, early on I assumed it was a way to cheap out on the overhead involved in making figurines: Just make one mold, and paint features onto it and you can say it's such-and-such a character even though they're all just identical shapes. But then I actually saw a bunch of them together and realized, no, it's not even that; the molds really are all unique, they actually look like cookie-cutter bobbleheads for aesthetic reasons.

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
they're cheap to make, largely harmless and make a lot of people go "hey I recognize that thing"
plus as far as I've been told it's a thing so inoffensive that you can easily make it an alibi gift or a harmless cubicle decoration
the blandness is part of the appeal

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
Yeah. That's why I think that they are on the same level of garden gnomes.
They are small and tacky and somewhat ugly and don't provide any real substantial benefit on its environment.
And yet they are produced and get thousands of different looks based on a simple template,
the Funko Pop blocky button-eyed monstrosities, the gnome standard red cap and beard.
And yet they are everywhere and bought by people.

I suppose there is one advantage they have over more on-model figurines: You could put any combination of characters from any IPs on the same shelf and they'd look like they belong together.

Every Funko Pop I own (all four of them) is of a real person, and they fit a nice middle space of being a physical object to represent someone I'm a fan of without being a creepy doll.

All I know is the Doraemon Funko is terrifying, and there's about a million cute plastic toys of him. He's probably the easiest thing to make a cute toy of, and YET

"Fuzzy Dice" would be a good name for a furry RPG comic.

Does anyone ever see somebody commenting on something, and saying things like "why do the characters have landlines? and why are they doing this? Nobody does this anymore?" and you just wanna shake them and say "Dude, it's just aesthetics. Who cares?"
Or at least repeat the MST3K mantra "It's just a show, don't worry about it"
I dunno. I think I just don't care too much if a story doesn't 100% reflect reality
(and going with the phone example, I've seen cartoons continue to use candlestick phones up until the 1970s; in real life, they went obsolete in the 1930s)

Also, I kinda want to draw my characters use rotary phones just because they're visually pleasing. The only reason I draw smartphones is because they're easier to draw than old-school phones.

instead of landlines, or phones at all, it's messengers with fatal wounds, who die just after sending their missives.

I thought today that I see on average 3 deer a night since I usually drive about .5 miles at near 1-2 AM when no one is out on the road or anywhere so the deer feel safe to roam.

Just thought I'd mention, turns out the emerging AV1 codec has something kind of like this:Pocket wrote: ↑Fri Aug 31, 2018 4:19 amI could swear I've already posted this here before but maybe I'm just going mad. Someone ought to invent digital audio and video codecs whose compression artifacts manifest as a grainy picture and scratchy, lo-fi sound, so they'd be ideal for recreating old-timey media. I'm picturing them being used primarily in video games, for stuff like the kinetoscopes in BioShock. Current mainstream compression methods are especially bad at preserving things like film grain or TV snow.
Neat.Wikipedia wrote:Film grain synthesis (film_grain) improves coding of noisy signals using a parametric video coding approach. Due to the randomness inherent to film grain noise, this signal component is traditionally either very expensive to code or prone to get damaged or lost, possibly leaving serious coding artefacts as residue. This tool circumvents these problems using analysis and synthesis, replacing parts of the signal with a visually similar synthetic texture, based solely on subjective visual impression instead of objective similarity. It removes the grain component from the signal, analyzes its non-random characteristics, and instead transmits only descriptive parameters to the decoder, which adds back a synthetic, pseudorandom noise signal that's shaped after the original component.

You know that trope you see in movies, where a person gets shot by a tranquilizer dart and they keel over, dart sticking out of their neck?
I always get anxious, because what if the person falls on the dart and seriously injures themself?

I’m watching a Chip & Ironicus LP I remember following when it was new
It’s 9 years old
I’ve finally gotten to the point where I think “everything since 2005 = recent history” so pardon me while I crumble into dust, like a mummy

Same with me. I was shocked when I realized "Chowder" and "Flapjack", both of which I watched religiously when they were airing, are now over a decade old.

LEGO Star Wars. Aside from using the r-word a couple of times it’s aged better than I would’ve expected from 2010-era goon content
Chip yelling “I WANT TO MEDITATE AT HIM” during the Darth Maul stage is the highlight for me so far
