Finally finished Watch_Dogs 2, only, uh, four years late. Everyone who's already said it's better than Watch_Dogs 1 is right. It's optimistic in that Hackers kind of way, instead of just being an angry doofus like Aiden Pearce.
But mostly I just wanted to show off some photos.

Re: General gaming superthread
RANT
I tried to play Elite Dangerous yesterday.
It is probably the worst game I've played with that kind of production value since ever.
Thankfully I bought it from a relatively recent Humble Bundle because it has VR support and I was eager to play something new with my HTC Vive.
Oh boy.... what a waste.
It already started off with the wrong foot as I had to register an account and link my steam to Frontier (the developer).
Firstly I hate setting up an account for a stupid game, secondly it didn't work the first time.
After half an hour of try and repeat it worked.
And then I was hit with a game with a very clunky controls scheme as well as finicky VR-related stuff.
The XBox 360 controller has the weirdest mapping and double-mappings.
Pitch and Roll on the left stick and on the right it was only Yaw.
Acceleration and Deceleration on RB and LB, and weapon switching was X+RB and X+LB respectively.
Shooting was with RT and LT.
....
Also there were distinctions on mode switching with short and long presses.... What a mess.
On the VR side you had menus on the left and right that you had look on them for them to work with the D-Pad and A and B.
Too bad that they are so far left and right that it hurts.
It's so easy to look off the menu and lose focus and do everything again.
Also on my Vive the text is sooooo hard to read. Sure I would need a higher resoultion VR headset but it's not the point.
Even larger text for better headsets is also a huge improvement for them (had a Vive Pro at work with a higher resolution and did a small test for myself). Aliasing is still a bitch at a better resolution..
Also I hate headless avatar bodies where your view is where the head would be.
They are soooo distracting, especially when adjusting my own seat as I often had to in order to view the menus and get near the text.
The person's collar was so high it was annoying.
I haven't found an option to disable the model.
And then the game itself...
The tutorial was a joke. Flying through rings was OK. Standard affair as I had no time limit.
Then the fight... The enemies flew so often outside the playable volume and I tried to follow them. But the game refused and FORCEFULLY rotated me towards the center and pushed me inside. That took 15 seconds (or felt like).
It happened all the time.
And the feather that broke the camel's back was when I started my FIRST mission.
I flew to the station I had to dock to and it had a SEVEN MINUTE wait time in the docking queue.
There is no real reason for having it.
Half-way through I rage-quitted and uninstalled the game.
The game disrespected my time and my goodwill towards the game for having a badass space fight.
I got neither.
Avoid with all cost.

I agree that they do not do a very good job with their tutorial, but the "waiting 7 minutes to dock" has never happened to me. You can also forcibly override the auto dock sequence and just push ahead and dock.Adiwan wrote: ↑Tue Sep 08, 2020 8:05 amRANT

And I agree that the tutorial where you fight the NPC and the game keeps not letting you go after him and keeps turning you around is annoying as hell, but once you get past the tutorial the game starts getting a lot better.

Re: General gaming superthread
Currently the Ludum Dare game jam http://ldjam.com is about to close its submissions.
I've done a game on my own based on the theme "Stuck in a Loop".
You're a horse minding your own business when the sheriff caught you in his lasso.
Show him who's boss by smacking him into as many different objects as possible!
Download page:
https://adiwan.itch.io/lasso-loop-whiplash
Windows and Linux versions available.
The art assets are bought as well as the horse and its controls. I have only modified it to fit the playstyle.

The categories are Fun, Innovation, Theme (theme adherence), Humor, Mood, Overall.
I mean... I am adhering to the theme. A lasso has a loop. The loop part is thrown over the horse's neck. And the horse is stuck in it.
I hope it's at least this satisfying to play.Mechanical Ape wrote: ↑Mon Oct 05, 2020 6:16 pmI can’t begin to tell you how satisfying this was to watch.

A gem from the game jam (not by me). You have to create a circle with the caterpillar's body in order to capture.

Re: General gaming superthread
I'm currently in the process of completely disassembling and cleaning my PS3 because the internet told me I should!
This will also involve replacing the thermal paste, which the internet also told me to do and, as it turns out, is absolutely necessary because the heat sinks can't actually be separated from the parts that need cleaning. It's also absolutely necessary because... well, look how little there is left of it:
I guess it... evaporated? Like, really slowly I hope? Also I haven't seen white thermal paste since I took apart a TI computer from the '80s.
It might also be a unit that was refurbished at some point, because despite the warranty sticker, there's visible flux residue on parts of the board and a messy solder job on the hard drive ports that's definitely bridging two pins. It was working fine in spite of that, so I guess the bridge is either inconsequential or necessary? Still freaks me out.

My game received decent rankings for each category (on a 5 star rating).
There were 3206 games submitted to the game jam.
I've also added a HTML5 version, however it's behaving a little bit strange physics-wise and in a few spots there is weird z-fighting.

Re: General gaming superthread
Petal Crash is the new best action-puzzle game ever made and you should play it if you have even a passing interest in the genre
at first it seemed like a real galaxy-brainer but the game mechanics are super intuitive to learn and master. like you can build chains on the fly from either end and there are lots of ways to improvise when something gets disrupted or you find an error with it. did i mention chains are not super broken in the first place??? generally speaking a 5-chain is considered optimal in VS play, and if you go much higher than that you'll see diminishing returns in terms of how long it takes to set up and resolve vs how much garbage it sends your opponent
there are also two wincons that balance out setup-heavy and clear-heavy playstyles: you can use chains to try and overgrow (completely fill) your opponent's board using garbage blocks, but it can be tough to do so in an even matchup because of the sheer amount of space on the board. more often than not, matches are instead won by a tug-of-war mechanic where clearing more total blocks than your opponent pushes them toward an ever-shrinking threshold of losing one of their three (default) stock. you lose when your stock hits zero, so even if you're good at making chains they may only serve to slow down your opponent's clear speed rather than net you a quick overgrowth victory. either way, you have to make sure you aren't slowed down too much setting them up or you leave yourself open to losing stock in the process
overall the game is really fun and doesn't even begin to fall apart at high levels. in a game like Panel De Pon (Puzzle League) you tend to see high-level matches as games of survival with a giant stack of garbage always on your head. in a game like Puyo Puyo you tend to see high-level matches decided on the timing of single huge chains. in a game like Tetris you tend to see high-level matches decided by high-speed setup recreation like the T-spin triple-double. in a game like Petal Crash the only thing you really have to do is play fast and improvise, and it's beautiful

Re: General gaming superthread
I've been watching Demon's Souls LPs recently, and came away from it with the revelation that the game is way easier if you just know the optimal order to take the various levels and what items to get along the way. If the devs had wanted to give it an "easy mode", they could have simply added a guide character who can observe your behavior and offer suggestions on where to go and what to do. And then ask at the beginning of a new run whether you want to turn on "Guided Mode" or not, sort of like what No Man's Sky did with the Atlas. So maybe you're in 4-1 getting your butt kicked by skeletons. The little guide icon pops up over Off-Brand Navi's head, and if you press the button, she's like "Hey, those skeletons are weak to blunt damage. Even your bare hands would be more effective than that cool sword you're using. But if you want, I know where you can find a good mace without much trouble." And if you say Yes, she'll tell you to head to 5-1.
