Open World games like that really do need more variety to make things worth it, or some other factor to drive you to do the content. That can be gameplay, rewards, or just thematicness.

Like, if there was an open world game where you rescue cute witches, I would rescue all of them no matter how boring the gameplay was

the simple act of checking things off a checklist is enough to keep me going and engaged in most games, which is why I thought mafia 3 was great (put about 70 hours into playing through it twice) and i love most of ubisoft's open world games

I sunk over 100 hours into Fallout 3 before I stopped, not because I was anywhere close to finishing the main quest but because I'd gotten bored. And mind you, I chose to wander around aimlessly instead of rushing my way through the main quest. I don't know what that says about me, or the game.

On the other hand, Steam says I also sank that much time into BioShock, and I have no idea how. It's only a 15-20-ish-hour game and I don't remember replaying it that many times.

Will Borderlands 3 Steam still not have local multiplayer without crazy hacks? I bought it like day 2 on EGS and then got it refunded because I never imagined consoles would have local co-op and the PC wouldn't.

My partner and I are planning on playing multiplayer, but we each have our own computers, so it won't be a problem. Split-screening is great for consoles, but I've never wanted to play a FPS on a PC split-screen.

Borderlands 3 is now $29.99 on Steam until March 20. The Super Deluxe Edition that comes with a 4-DLC season pass and a bunch of cosmetic stuff is $49.99.

Ori & the Will of the Wisps is out!!

Holy crap this game looks so good!!!

They took the amazing platforming and metroidvania structure of the first one and layered some new systems and stuff on top that definitely reminds me of Hollow Knight

if you don't already have it, you should absolutely pay $1 to sign up for a month of game pass on PC and play this game

as an aside, the developer of the fan-created remake of Metroid 2 (which was shut down by nintendo shortly after it's launch), AM2R, was hired by the studio behind Ori, and he was one of the people who worked on Will of the Wisps

i just thought that it was cool to hear about

My Dark Souls 3 new game+ run is still going well. The next boss I have to face is the Dragonslayer Armour at the end of Lothric Castle (and the start of the Grand Archives.) I'm at 19 deaths at the moment, counted from the start of NG+.

Both OneShot and Virgo vs. the Zodiac are slightly obscure pixelish games that are unique and good and on sale on Steam together and separately. OneShot is very...plot-centric RPG-maker-ish and good for people who like surprises and liked certain aspects of Undertale. Virgo vs. is a timed-attack RPG (like the Mario and Luigi games) with a weird style and maybe a hint of lesbians.

I've been told it's one of those games you should go into blind. It's something I've meant to get eventually and if Animal Crossing weren't just about to come out, I'd consider picking it up now.

Random question: You know how games on PC open right to the menu, but on consoles you always have to "PRESS START" first? What's up with that? Some kind of certification requirement, I guess, but is there a reason behind it?

It's because the start screen can load up without having to know what user is logged in and what controller they are using. Once a user presses start, it knows who the primary user is and can load whatever save data is tied to that account. On modern consoles this is where it syncs your save from the cloud if it has to.

That only makes sense for modern games, but "Press start" is a holdover from older games. As far as I know, until recently where it does have an actual reason, (as explained by Ixnay there) I think it's just a holdover from arcade games where pressing start was how you started after putting in enough quarters. Console games, even ones that weren't ports of arcade games, took some arcade ideas with them, such as the "attract" mode, where if you don't press start, it'll run demos or the opening movie again.

I think most of the reason for "press start" was to fit with this "attract mode" style. Even modern PC games use that, using the main menu instead of a "press start" screen for attract mode if you don't press anything, like final fantasy 14.

And then there are games that think they're too cool for start screens and main menus and dump you into gameplay. :-I

I love when games "quit" to the title screen, then make you press start to get to the menu to go to the options screen to quit the game.
