The winners of the steam awards
looks like this:
it's
entirely stuff I'm ignoring
that's incredible
the only one that looked interesting was that gris one but that one was definitely one in my "only play it if daikatuna posts about it" because I know better than to just pick things that have good reviews.
also dayz won an award somehow

Gris is a very pretty game about traveling through physical manifestations of the stages of grief. It absolutely deserves whatever awards it can snag, though I probably won't play it any time soon because it's a bit too heavy in concept for me as I am now.

I'll keep it in my ignore list for that reason instead then because that sounds like a good game that is not for me

Re: The winners of the steam awards
There weren't a lot of mind-blowingly awesome games to come out this year, but Baba Is You losing Most Innovative Gameplay to Wacky Banana Game is just ugh. That's the kind of snub I wouldn't even expect to see happen at the Game Awards.

Re: The winners of the steam awards
It won "Game for Impact" at The Game Awards this year, which is super great for it. It's somewhat unfortunate that the presentation of said award was upstaged by Untitled Muppet Goose shenanigans, as amazing that skit was. (The entire thing just existed as a setup for a "Geese = Gris" pun, btw.)

Right?? That's astonishing. And Labor of Love went to a game that hasn't been updated by its developers in ages as opposed to stuff like Don't Starve Together which is still in active development. It's astonishingly against the point of the dang awards

Oh, just noticed A Plague Tale on there, too. Also a really good narrative stealth game, but the recent trailers have done a great job of spoiling the twist that the titular plague is in fact supernatural in origin and the game is not just a middle ages historical fiction like it wants you to believe initially. Like, seriously, what the hell? Marketing firms are really dumb.

Re: The winners of the steam awards
Beat Saber is a lot of fun. It's no wonder that it's the system seller for any VR headset and a big party game (if set up properly). It's also no wonder that Oculus bought the developer of the game.
The only grievance I have is that the default music selection is not that great. At least for my music taste.
At least there is now an official level editor (PC only, doesn't work with Oculus Quest).

Oh, yeah, beat saber's just ignored because I can't afford a VR system.

gta v winning "labour of love" is like the most cynical thing possible considering rockstar's work practices

Speaking of gaming award snubs, I'm still annoyed that Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers lost out for "Best Ongoing Game" to Fortnite.

Re: The winners of the steam awards
the steam awards kind of highlight the big problems with entirely community based awards, where it's quite possible for fans of a particular thing to go "oh I really liked this, lets vote for that" instead of actually consider literally any other factors in there. So instead of having a variety of newer games that should be examples of new games that people should check out, you've got shit like GTA V and DayZ, which have already existed and had their chance to shine stinking up the place when there's other, newer games that may actually deserve them, but don't get the chance because there's too many people who like and vote for big older game they liked

and it's to say that astonishingly, only labor of love was applicable to games not made in 2019.
Meaning they somehow consider DayZ to be a 2019 game

Re: The winners of the steam awards
Labor of Love was specifically an award for a game that's older but still getting new content. Which is something I do think developers deserve recognition for in an age of continuing to sell games that stopped being compatible with modern systems, and online games that get shut down so they can slap a 2 on the end and make you buy it again. The trouble is that, instead of going to a lesser-known game that actually is being maintained as a labor of love, it went to a game with a billion-dollar budget that's still being maintained because it's still a massive cash cow. Because all contests are popularity contests.
