MLP:FIM to end with 9th season

Post by Fizzbuzz (?) » Sat Feb 16, 2019 6:14 pm

The rumors were true. Season 9 will be the final season.

I was prepared for this, but I still feel sad.

It's unfortunate, but we knew it was coming.

I wish some of the new characters like Autumn Blaze and the students had been introduced earlier, but hapefully they'll play a part in the final season. Image

All good things must come to an end, and I'm glad they're not milking it like The Simpsons, which just got renewed through its 32nd season, about 20 seasons too long imo. MLP:FiM will have great rewatchability and it'll always be remembered fondly because they knew how to quit while they were ahead. :flutterunsmith:

I think this could probably use a new thread, so more people notice.

Here's part of what I posted on another board.
Nine years in, this is still one of the most active fanbases I've ever been a part of. I can barely keep up with all the fan art that comes in every day. It's hard to say how many will stick around after this show ends for whatever comes next, but I'll certainly give it a shot. Even if it turns out weak, FiM has definitely shifted my perspective on MLP to more or less the same way I'd view Transformers, where even if one new show sucks, I'm completely willing to give the next a try.

Even though it's coming to an end officially, I think the fans will keep G4 alive through artwork and animations. I've never seen a show that inspired so much creativity and imagination. :allears:

Done.

Sad news but we knew it had to come to an end sometime. I'm just sad that the Gen5 movie didn't get a sequel, the 2d animation was great and I thought it did decently for what it was.

The Rainbow Road storyline was going to be the story for a sequel movie apparently so it'll still be told within this final season in some form, just not as a big single event.

I wonder how long the comics will follow the G4 world. Adventure Time has its season 11 in comic form and Avatar The Last Airbender goes well in trade paperback form.

Nine seasons is waaaaay more than we ever expected we'd get. In the early days, we figured it'd be Hasbro's usual three season run and that's it. We got triple that! All without having the show go completely down the drain in terms of quality! I really do think that's impressive. The fandom and the show had their rough patches and thoroughly bad decisions, but overall I will always look at this show as something that brought me joy and still brings me joy. I know I'm far from the only one, too. That's a pretty damn big accomplishment, I'd say. :flutterunsmith:

If they don't bring it full circle with Discord passing final judgement on Twilight and all ponykind, why did they even bother getting John de Lancie?

Hopefully they'll stick around until at least the start of G5. Depending on what the final season does and how the series finale goes, it'd be cool if the comics could serve as an epilogue to FiM's story.

The show definitely had an impact one me, having met a lot of cool people through the fandom, and it also creatively inspired me.

Godspeed, you crazy horsies. You brought us joy when we needed it most.

Probably best NOT to go toe-to-toe with one of the greatest series finale's of all time. :smirk:

That being said, I think they'll try to work Discord into the finale somehow. Probably have him get captured along with Celestia and Luna to build up the "threat" of the last big bad guy.

:pinkieshrug: Sorry, i'm a downer on that, but when it comes to the "big threat the Equestria" stories, I have zero faith in them doing anything new. If a big milestone like a movie didn't do it, a series finale won't do it.

I am curious if the entire season was made, knowing it was the last. If so, I think we may see a greater focus on a building narrative than we have in previous seasons. We may also get episodes designed to act as finale's for certain characters. Kind of like the Deep Space Nine finale. They did it over 10 episodes, and one of them acted as Quark's finale (even though he was in the finale). I can see the CMC getting their own finale episode.

It's been a good run though. My dislike of the vast majority of 2-part episodes aside, I enjoyed the vast majority of what came between them. I hope we'll get a lot of good episodes before we get to the finale. Looking forward to what they have in store for episode 200.

Big Jim Miller posted a Twitter thread once the news broke yesterday. In this tweet, he mentions that he and the crew knew, so hopefully they'll be able to send it off properly.

Nine seasons, a Dougworld spinoff and a couple of feature films is a good solid run. I am satisfied. :good:

G4 and its characters will endure for as long as we the fans choose to revisit them, which will of course be FOREVER because of this fandom and the internet. And there's a G5 in the future. The critical mass has been reached where Friendship Is Magic is a cultural thing which will, in some form, always be here.

If the show had been cancelled after one or two seasons, that would have felt like an ending. At this point what's ahead doesn't feel much like an end to me; more of a transition, a continuation into the next thing.

Pony will outlive us all. It will weep at our gravesides like a bad-fanart Twilight.

I wonder what will happen with Chrysalis next year. I presume there'll be closure one way or another. On the one hand, reforming her would be the ultimate triumph of love and friendship. It's no secret that I'm a Thorax fan, so I'd love to see him play a role in that. Image On the other, if she dosen't change, it will send the message that despite thier best efforts, the Mane 6 and thier comrades can't change everypony. Time will tell, I guess.

Whatever else they do, the show should end as it began, with the final scene being the book closing. Image

Does it end with Celestia turning evil and Luna banishing her to the sun? So it'll be like the beginning but somewhat reverse.

This matches how I feel, absolutely, except perhaps even more positive. I missed a lot of the early fandom stuff (aka when the show was "at its cultural peak"), but the show has provided me with so many great memories by itself that I can't help but feel grateful. The way the show has spread since it premiered to now has been a marvel to observe.

I will be excited for whatever happens next with this franchise, but I do have to wonder about what's happening in regards to Equestria Girls and that other MLP movie (the latter of which I know very little about, granted).

Also, on the subject of a season finale, I'm kind of hoping it goes more for sentimentality and has a smaller-scale conflict (as opposed to an "epic" conflict). I guess it can go for some "epic" and "big", but if this is to be the last finale of the show, I'd absolutely want a "everyone gets their moment" 10th Doctor / Gravity Falls -type ending.

MLP finale: make me cry! If you don't make me cry, then I might just cry... but that would be my own fault. :twiright:

I’m thinking I should try to catch up with all the episodes I missed and follow along with season 9, just for sentiment’s sake.

10 years ago I would have sneered at the idea that a pony cartoon would change my life and help me make friends, but it kinda did and here I am.

I... What? This is on a whole new level of weird.

(Also it's pretty jarring that Andrea Libman isn't voicing Pinkie here, but then the end bit where Pinkie tells you to watch more videos is voiced by her.)

It's... fine. 3DCG is a weird way to go, but it doesn't look terrible. But yeah, having what appears to be a budget Andrea Libman voice on a direct G4 design translation feels strange.

It looks so wrong. The cartoony movement doesn't fit it well. Maybe if they used the talent of Genndy Tartakovsky it might work.
The model doesn't stretch and doesn't move as snappy as it should to get the cartoony vibe on the screen.
The totally broken 2D pony versions that we are used to see are still the best.
Also Pinkie is a blank flank there!!! :snooty:
