I don't want the show to end, at least, not at season 9.
I feel like there's still a lot to do with the characters. I'd love a Starswirl and Discord episode, for example. Or maybe explore the Student Six more. There's enough material to make 1 or 2 more seasons.
Why does the show have to end now?

Seven year olds who started watching when the show started are going to be getting driver's licenses this year.
They need to start something new for the new kids.

Branch out too much into the side characters and you risk losing focus on the main characters. Use the main characters too much and you risk making them rather dull. That was[/i] is the ongoing fate of The Simpsons, a once-great show that became miserable enough to even taint its golden age. Hasbro wanted FiM to be remembered fondly, so they chose to end it while it's still good; that way, the MLP brand carries a better image on into its next generation.

MLP: FiM is so firmly entrenched in pop culture, it will never go away completely. The fandom has been so incredibly creative, the show will live forever in that sense.
