You just put them in the freezer. Then when you want your whiskey, you can pop them in. The fact that they don't melt means that your drink gets cold and it doesn't dilute the flavor.
Those are actually terrible, drinks get cold when the ice melts, so there's no way they can chill the drink like ice. Also unless you're letting it sit forever most good brown liquor is meant to have a little water to open the flavors up.
