Spinel is a visual treat. I doubt we'll see her again but the increased budget really shows in her antics. I didn't see the amnesia plot coming and I'm glad they kept it well under wraps.

Best singing voice goes to Bismuth.

Surprising amount of Grearl fuel in this despite the backlash from Mr. Greg. Speaking of, Steg was amazing.

Steven Universe continues to lowkey be about abuse and the abuse cycle. Granny White Diamond was a Narc Mom, Rosie was trying but replicated a lot of abuse tactics she learned from Narc Mom and fellow abused elder siblings. You could do a Golden Child/Scapegoat reading with regards to Steven and Spinel if you wanted to. Spinel spoke to me a lot in a way Steven never did. The misplaced rage and explosions of suspicion and anger are familiar to me. The fact that Spinel spun herself out as she realized she would never get the catharsis she needed from beating up on Steven was probably the most powerful moment in the movie for me.

There's probably something to be said about Spinel ending up with the Diamonds, former perpetrators of abuse who are trying to reform but with whom Steven still needs to set boundaries, but its something I have to mull over for a bit more.

I liked that the message of the movie was pretty much stated outright: There is no happily ever after. Times of peace and wonderful times exist, but there's always going to be more challenges and you have to keep growing and overcoming them.

They also managed to make Top Man from Megaman 3 a worthy final boss so kudos.

Best Song: Drift Away

It's awful.
The message is awful. The character regression is awful.
The plot structure is awful. The pacing is awful. The resolution is awful.
The villain doesn't fit visually.

Making the characters regress to their initial state makes the story feel a retread of previous episodes in a bad way.
It hinders the NEW things that could be.
This also affects the pacing. The big injector is clearly a threat and it was addressed when it was "convenient".
Steven stumbles around without even mentioning that weapon.
I cannot stress out how BAD the diamonds are with their obsession with Pink and it gets worse when Spinelle accepted
their offer to stay with them. Spinelle wanted friendship, they wanted an image of the past. And it is the worst message.
It's like going from a failed relationship to another on the horizon that can be even worse due to incompatible relationship reasons (or their foundation of).
Spinelle as a rubber hose Mickey Mouse design has no place to the show's visual language despite having a lot of diverse and unique designs. The other characters walk and move more grounded and obey more the laws of physics than anything Spinelle does.
