An early Mountain Dew commercial. Back then the drink had hillbilly motif, the idea being it's a moonshine soft drink.

I don't know if "It'll Tickle Your Innards!" is the best slogan ever or the worst.

I can only say that I guessed it before the reveal of the logo, and that's only because I've been in enough of those places to recognize it while blurry. :v:

I don't know if it fits here well but it's the thread with the closest match.

So Amazon recommends me some MLP books from the "historic books" category.
Either I missed a huge chunk of my history classes or something foul is afoot.

Found this Japanese commercial for a battery from 1974. Maybe a precursor to the Energizer bunny commercials?

Also, WATCH IT TO THE END. :amazing:

It's even weirder than that. According to Wikipedia, Energizer's bunny was a parody of a Duracell commercial from around this same time. And in response to the popularity of Energizer's ad campaign, Duracell decided to revive their own pink bunny character overseas, and continues to use it to this day.

I have no idea how that National commercial fits into any of that.

It's not unusual for Japanese companies to, uh, be "inspired" by American ad campaigns. Largely because, well, how are they going to know what aired on television half-way across the world in the 1970s, before the internet?

Although National at least went a step further than Duracell probably did with their ad campaigns.

Also something I learned: Panasonic (the company that owns the "National" brand) sponsored a TV show in Japan called National Kid. The name wad used in a blatant effort to promote their line of electronics.

The show was a flop and was cancelled after 39 episodes, but went on to gain a cult status in Brazil.

(Seriously, read the synopsis in the Wiki link. The hero's "ray gun" was actually a type of flashlights that the company made, and the kids contacted him through "Magic Radio", which was just a radio transmitter put out by Panasonic)

Adam West, being typecast, was forced to appear in a bunch of stuff to pay his bills. This commercial's one of them:

Also, this turned out to be a huge scam :-I

I saw Adam West at a convention about a year before he passed away. My primary takeaway from his panel was that he did a lot just to pay his bills. Almost everything he was asked about by fans in the Q&A portion of the panel was something he either didn't remember or didn't really have any thoughts on doing, beyond some low-key resentment of the fact that he was being paid to rehash his Batman performance for the billionth time. As entertaining as he is as a performer, he certainly didn't have a lot of passion for his work.

On one hand, it's good to be remembered for something, but at the same time it feels like a curse. "Batman" was a huge hit and it made Adam West famous, but that also turned into an undoing, with nobody, especially in Hollywood, taking him seriously as an actor. He was typecast as a goofy superhero from that one show, and the only real work he could get was when he does a variation of his Batman performance.

I can understand why West had no passion for what he did.

I think the only two things I ever saw that let him do anything different were, weirdly enough, his recurring role on Family Guy, and future Batman adaptations. Family Guy's Mayor Adam West had nothing to do with Batman and was more a vehicle for non sequiturs and the like, while his cameos in later Batman stuff were obviously references to him being a former Batman, but the characters he played were super obviously not Batman, and that was the whole thematic point. The Grey Ghost in BTAS and Thomas Wayne in Brave and the Bold are the two I can think of off the top of my head.

That Simpsons scene always brought to mind this ad, which was going around the same time. Fragrance commercials are weird.

Then there was the time Michael Palin did some ads for a classic-rock station in Chicago:

They're not bad commercials by any means -- just an odd pairing of product and spokesman. Maybe he was in town that week anyway, I don't know the story. :fluttershrug:

Before the picture loaded I thought this was at least going to be a clear reference to that LOVE statue in Philadelphia, where the O is tilted at a 45-degree angle, and thus since the O is the special letter then dumbass merchandisers would always replace it regardless of whatever state or other symbol was being put in. With this, I just don't know.

I have to wonder if that's because of some regulation somewhere. Like, since it's not usable as a soccer ball they had to put that on there or something :v:

This cereal was originally called Sugar Crisp, then Super Sugar Crisp (which coincides with my childhood :granny: ), then Super Golden Crisp, and finally just Golden Crisp. That is the circle of life.

Another Post commercial with Bugs Bunny for Alpha-Bits cereal.

Mel Blanc voices Bugs as usual, with Hal Smith voicing Elmer Fudd.

Fudd's original voice actor, Arthur Q. Bryan, had died by the time these commercials were being made. Smith's Elmer voice is, uh, very off :-I
