Re: The Garbage Dump: 100+ pages of well-aged compost
Yeah, I have no idea how discs end up that bad. When I booted up the Xbox, the disc drive started making some noises, and then it alerted me that "The software on this disc has an update available" and I was like, wait, did someone leave a game in here? Yep. An extravagantly scratched copy of Saints Row the Third, which is so damaged that it won't even get past the new-game loading screen.
Not the first time I've bought something with a disc left in it, either. Two years ago I bought a Blu-Ray player with a slightly defective tray motor, and when I opened it up to see if I could address the issue, I discovered that someone had chucked a kids' DVD inside the case. Maybe to hide it from a sibling who insisted on watching it every day?

Re: The Garbage Dump: 100+ pages of well-aged compost
I don't either. The PC games I bought used were almost always free of scratches.
Only console games were abused to hell with a lot of irregular scratches. I bought a lot of PS2 games with Sly Cooper 3 just to find out that the game I really wanted was scratched beyond hope.
On the other side some scratches come from the console itself (although used in an unexpected manner):
The XBox 360 had a notorious issue scratching up discs. Most notably it'll happen when the console is put from the standing position to lying (or vice-versa). That maneuver will create a deep ring-shaped scratch ultimately destroying the data layer on the disc. A small foam pad costing a few cents could have prevented this.

Sometimes I'd buy used pc games from the local library and they were generally still in decent condition.
New signature pending.

What kind of PC games can one buy from a library? What games still use CDs? Red Alert 2? Also, what computer still has a CD drive?
If I had a bit for every time you made me feel worthless I'd be worth something by now.

It really is remarkable how Introversion's early games came out at the dawn of digital distribution making indie games really possible. There are some stories online of what a hassle it was to get Uplink and Darwinia out and onto retail shelves.

digital distrubtion has done wonders for getting your game out there, i don't think a lot of people realize how expensive printing large quantities of CDs can be

My copy of DEFCON is still in its shrink wrap because I ordered it online and they emailed the key. Gonna be worth like two dollars to a collector someday.

Will a collectible be worth something in the future?Void Chicken wrote: ↑Tue May 25, 2021 10:21 amMy copy of DEFCON is still in its shrink wrap because I ordered it online and they emailed the key. Gonna be worth like two dollars to a collector someday.
Cost a lot of money when it was new: yes
Cheap and made to last maybe a week, a month if you took care of it: maybe
Says "collectible" or "limited edition" or it was sold in a kinkade catalog: no

Re: The Garbage Dump: 100+ pages of well-aged compost
I have only a few shrinkwrapped games.
I have a copy of Psychonauts for the original XBox in its original shrinkwrap. I bought it for 2€ at a flea-market.
I didn't bother opening it since I have it for PC.
Same for a copy of Crazy Taxi for the Gamecube.
I have some Wii U games like Star Fox Zero and Mario Tennis and Watch_Dogs and Fast Racing Neo but had no real drive to play them yet but I want to open them eventually.

Re: The Garbage Dump: 100+ pages of well-aged compost
For the past couple years, there's been this bird in our back yard whose song sounds like a little kid asking "What'cha doooooin'?" None of us knows what bird sounds like that, and no one has been able to locate it. Even my dad, who's studied books about backyard birds, is stumped. I also have no memory of a bird like that being around when I was younger, so maybe it's something that used to live further north and whose migration patterns have changed due to global warming?

Birds are weird with their singing. They pick up various sounds they hear in order to impress.
I heard some birds recreating old-school phone ringtones.

I thought this way for a time, and then I realized in hindsight that I had made some games (e.g. Bioshock, Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3) less fun since I was able to use trivial/shallow strategies that were boring to do all the time.DaikatunaRevengeance wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 5:23 ami always play on easy mode, tho

Re: The Garbage Dump: 100+ pages of well-aged compost
I played The Elder Scrolls Morrowind and Oblivion mostly in God Mode.
At the beginning I play normal but then the fights get tedious (as the enemies scale up as the player levels up) and then I was more interested in completing and collecting every item.
Skyrim was similar after I completed most things normally (plot, the guilds)
As for the rest of games I take normal. I'm not interested in torturing myself and I don't want to plow through.
Also I avoid super hard games. Super Meat Boy was fun, whereas Dark Souls was the opposite experience.
