Re: TIL Thread: Today I learned...
the term originates from a forum where one internet tough guy among other things boasted about being a mall cop and also knowing ninjutsu

TIL the word cookie has nothing to do with the fact that they're cooked; it's a corruption of the Dutch "koekje" meaning "little cake". And, in the UK, chocolate chip cookies are still called cookies rather than biscuits, because they were invented in America and that's what Americans call them.

Re: TIL Thread: Today I learned...
TIL that there was not one, but two anime inspired by the Stephen Foster song "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair": a 1979 series that aired for 13 episodes, and another one from 1992-93 that ran 52 episodes.
Both shows were dramas focusing on romance. The 1979 show took place in America during Civil War, while the 1992 show was a fictionalized account of Stephen Foster and Jeanie MacDowell (Foster's real life wife, and the inspiration for the song). Song aside, neither show had any connection with each-other, and were even made by different studios.
Interestingly, despite being inspired by the song, only the 1979 show actually used it as the theme song (lyrics translated to Japanese, obviously).

TIL that "The Godfather" had a subplot in the original book involving, uh, Sonny and his mistress Lucy.

Well, Windows is the only OS that can BSoD (as other OSes have different names for it).

TIL that the "ooo ooo ooo haa haa haa" sound effects you hear in movies taking place in the jungle comes not from monkeys, but from Kookaburra birds.
Even though those movies could take place anywhere from South America to Africa to Asia, these birds are native of Australia. Movie realism!

Speaking of, did you know that when you hear an "eagle" in movies, it's almost always the call of the red-tailed hawk?
We had one nest in our back yard all last summer, so we heard that iconic "Keeyeer!" a lot.
This, for the record, is what eagles really sound like.

I'm reminded how the horse galloping sounds in movies are achieved by hitting two halves of coconuts (famously parodied in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail").

Also, I just learned that the dolphin speak you hear in movies also came from Kookaburras. They just sped the audio up to make it squeakier.
