I got to play the original Duke Nukum once and was left wondering how the series ever went from a goofy platform-shooter to the mess that was Duke Nukem Forever.

The '90s were a hell of a time, I guess.

Duke Nukem 2 and 3D are probably the connecton, as they started giving Duke his more recongizable macho action hero persona. DNF would over the course of its development completly lose touch with both the original games and just the fact that they were becoming increasingly outdated.
