I was thinking about these scenes and how Sound! Euphonium has a real good sense of establishing mood.

Naoko Yamada, from K-On/Liz and the Blue Bird/et al, is the series director.
So she oversaw the overarching vision for the project.

She has a background in photography and often cites film directors as her main sources of inspiration.

So a lot of the more filmic aspects stem from that.

Her long time collaborator Tatsuya Ishihara is the director of the series, and in an interview they said that wrt the cinematography the feeling they went for is "as if a documentary film crew followed the characters around"

All the locales exist in real life, so there is a ton of stuff that this allows them to do that a 'real' crew wouldn't be able to, like putting the cameras in places where they wouldn't be able to otherwise.

Or using/simulating different lenses where real lenses wouldn't work because of a lack of space.

yeah the whole show / kyoani puts so much work and detail into em, like with K-On too they're all 2D animated, rather than 3D like you'd get in another show like Given.

there's sooo much research done to figure out how they work, how they're played, how they're held.

and to me it comes off as having a lot of respect and reverence for the instruments and the music they play

it's the same with the music and the overall sound design: how sound travels through different environments, how different materials affect it. It's all in there
