I'm just realizing that in the whole time I was still watching the show, there was hardly any interaction between Dash and Rarity. Did that change while I was gone?

There was a whole episode about Rainbow Dash and Rarity trying to find common ground, yes.

"Rarity Investigates!" from season 5 is another one, but yeah, there aren't that many episodes focusing on just Rarity and Dash.

Just because somepony is shown to be in a stable relationship with a pony of a different gender does not make either pony het.
... which is just as well, because there are no straights in Equestria.

Plus the final shot of the show has them as the only two characters making physical contact, with RD hovering behind AJ tenderly placing a hoof on her shoulder.

This is why I never share my opinions. Nobody agrees with them and I just get bitterly angry and resentful.
I’m not a good person, no matter how many people tell me I am. I’m always about 5 seconds from telling people to fuck off forever and/or wanting to physically attack them and the only way I can keep myself from turning into my father is to isolate myself as much as possible.

for what it's worth i agree
like i haven't seen the episodes she was in, but i knew what her deal is and the show just throwing her on the redeem pile always rubbed me the wrong way

Re: Appledash
and yeah you are deffo not the only person having rightful misgivings about Starlight, I enjoy what they made out of her but it feels like a different character from what she started as and I think they should have just *made* her a seperate character instead of redeeming the creepy cult leader
the creepy cult leader was interesting and the sassy friendship learner was interesting, but making them one in the same is pretty damn ill-advised imo

my absolute contempt for flashlight lensflare and how problematic i found the instant and unconditional forgiveness of her character is well documented. as a cult survivor, i was absofuckinglutely incensed and it ruined the show for me.

I wish I really wasn’t so angry. I’m sorry, Skipper.
I feel sick every time I lose my temper.
But yeah, I will never like Starlight Glimmer for the same reasons Perry, Daikatuna and Ember mentioned.

I personally feel they handled her turnaround well enough, given that all of her early post-turn episodes are about her being a massive, controlling fuckup who initially really has trouble figuring out how to properly treat people. But yeah, I totally get people's problems with her. There's a fine line between forgiveness of a character's past and sheer erasure of it, and where she falls in that is a matter of perception.
Your feelings and anger are 100% valid, Madeline, please don't feel bad about it.

Re: Appledash
anger can be healthy, part of the reason pulsar aurora is so problematic is that abusers will often use the 'well, if you stay angry at me and don't forgive me, then your the bad guy, not me.' move which instant forgiveness and shoddy redemption narratives help to reinforce.
if anger is consuming you though, then yeah, you might want to see someone about that

I don't care much about Starlight tbh, but I think rainbow pone is cute so the "Hmm" was more of a playful jab I'd dish out at anyone saying they don't like her.
In the end, neither of those characters is real anyway and they don't need anyone coming to their defense. I certainly didn't want to imply you were wrong or a bad person!

Re: Appledash
Starlight's struggles in S6 were quite an emotional arc. The trouble is, there was no hint of that to come in S5; The Cutie Re-Mark ended with a great big montage of making friends and closed on a group shot of everyone smiling with her in the middle. I imagine that was back when the show was still being renewed one season at a time and the writers didn't want a bittersweet coming-to-God moment and a broken person's first steps on the path of righteousness to possibly end up as the series finale.Perpetual Motion wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2019 3:38 pmI personally feel they handled her turnaround well enough, given that all of her early post-turn episodes are about her being a massive, controlling fuckup who initially really has trouble figuring out how to properly treat people. Yeah, that's fair. If the show had ended at S5, then it totally would have been unearned and pretty bad.

Re: Appledash
I made it halfway through S6 and while S5s finale was abhorrent, S6 was what broke me with regards to Twinkle Aurora. While backsliding into bad behavior is common, I was incensed that there little to no consequences to her backslides into abusive behavior, she was rewarded in absurd disproportion to her redemptive acts with status and power.
The Discord/Fluttershy episode is really the shows philosophy towards rehabilitation in microcosm. Give them all the kindness and forgiveness without precondition, and hope they'll magically change their behavior because of it.

Re: Appledash
At the very least, she did manage to grow, and generally felt really awful when she screwed up. Like, if she has remained static until the end of the show, then it certainly would have been some bullshit. Instead she figures things out and forms her own circle of friends independent of Twilight's, which was also a great excuse to reintroduce her best girlfriend Trixie back into the show and make her an actual good character with her own arc rather than some overdone fandom meme. So in the end, I guess it just comes down to how much initial forgiveness you're willing to tolerate, which is perfectly fair.
Sorry about dragging the thread down with my lame defense of a character everyone hates. She just kinda resonates with me because I used to be a massive awful fuckup, too. (I'm still a fuckup, but at least I made friends and am not so much of a bad person anymore.)

Re: Appledash
However much a fuckup anyone here is, I doubt it rates on the scale of fantasy Jim Jones.
There's a reason I don't have as much of a problem with say, Sunset Shimmers redemption, and while the mechanics of Discords rehabilitation were very suspect, its not nearly as heinous to me, since there's no real-world equivalent to their magical shenanigans. I understand that my experiences are not normal and to most people it is just as abstract as any other fantasy element, but the show deliberately referenced real-world atrocities and abuse in the depiction of Glinting Nebula's town, and redeeming that without a careful hand is problematic as hell. When you play with real-world elements like that without care, some people are going to get burned like I did, and they deserve to be criticized for it.

So am I.
I've never really given it thought because like Ghost of Ember says, it's pretty abstract to me since I've never been in a situation like that, but I think both of you have very reasonable arguments.
Just wanted to say that, now I think it's best I keep silent and listen to the different points of view put forth.
