I've been listening to an anime podcast by tietuesday and a few others, they finished watching Turn A Gundam (previously, they watched Legend of the Galactic Heroes, G Gundam, and Gundam Wing).

if you want a good mecha anime show (or a good Gundam show, or just a good show with good characters), Turn A Gundam absolutely sounds like it's fantastic

also as an aside, they've been watching bad movies between watching anime, so they watched Paul Blart Mall Cop 1 and 2, and then Grown Ups, with next week's episode going to be Grown Ups 2 and

I dig Gundam, and have seen the movie versions of the OG series, War in the Pocket and Origin, Unicorn.
Origin is I think my fave, Unicorn started out good but then kinda devolved into weird space magic bs

let's talk a bit about

Hunter x Hunter

[Mild spoilers ahead]

now if you've ever typed in "best anime" in Google chances are you've run into HxH.
it's a massively popular series and prolly one of the Anime Greats. It often gets mentioned in the same breath as Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.

That set expectations v high as I think FMAB is a downright triumph in writing, worldbuilding, characterization etc.
If I were to point towards a series that's had a big impact on my storytelling sensibilities I point to FMAB.

HxH rn is not that, it's more akin to a "standard" shounen battle anime where FMAB is more like Avatar: The Last Airbender.

It follows Gon, a young kid who sets out to become a Hunter just like his dad. A Hunter is someone with incredible, superhuman skill that takes on life threatening jobs.
These range from being bodyguards, to finding long lost treasures, to bountyhunting and... finding rare and exotic ingredients for dishes.

Being a Hunter comes with a bunch of great perks, like earning a shitload of cash, being able to travel pretty much anywhere and being the very top of human potential

Where it gets really interesting is that there's this hint of subtext that this world, this society, is kind of really fucked up.

To become a Hunter for instance you have to take an exam organized by the Hunters Association.
Roughly 400 people enter and along the way most... get wounded or die. They fall into ravines, get eaten alive and literally backstab each other in order to get that fabled Hunter license.

In one phase of the exam the trainees have to fight prisoners who got locked up for serial murder and other heinous crimes.

I'd like to mention that Gon and his friend Killua are both 12.

Oh by the way, Killua is a cold blooded assassin who will rip out your heart without so much as blinking.

Yeah...

There's also Hisoka, the dude with the star tattooed on his face. He gets explicitly acknowledged as a psychopath by the Hunters Association, threatens to murder the Association's boss and they're just... fine with that.
Cuz he's really strong.

He's also very, very horny for violence. I don't think that's important for the Association, but I'd just like to mention that.

HxH's Ayn Randian world is built v lackadaisical and haphazard. It feels like it's made up as the original writer went along, but it fits the overall "weirdly-carefree-about-the-bad-shit-that-happens-but-we-don't-really-talk-about" vibe.
Later on it gets shades of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and starts leaning into the more bullshit side of supernatural powers.

I mean that in the best way possible. It gets really fun once a certain magic system starts to unravel and the battles escalate.

A point against it would be that the first arc is really bland audiovisually, it's not until a fight scene between Gon and Hisoka around the 30 episode mark that I leaned forward and went "oh I think shit just got real".

God I love that shot of Gon's face when he's spinning.

I can't find any cuts on sakugabooru of anything preceding the 2nd arc of the series.

We're into the 3rd arc of the series rn, dubbed Phantom Troupe.

Kurapika, the blonde haired boy who is the best character in this series, is out to take revenge on the Spiderclan for killing his friends and family.
The setup is fantastic, you follow along a large cast of different characters as they're all descending on a huge underground auction.

It feels like a heist movie. Everyone's there with different goals and motivations and I'm really pumped to see Kurapika FUCK SHIT UP.

We might take a break from the series after we wrap this arc up, but so far it's been a definite highlight.

It's a bit of a wait before it gets really going, but the pacing is quick so you can shotgun through it p easily until you get to the juicy parts.

Leorio is like a smart and very athletic guy by real world standards who unfortunately was born in a world of superpowered shounen protagonists, but he still somehow makes it through with the greatest power of all, bullshitting

glad you're enjoying it so far, Phantom Troupe is where it starts getting really good, then next art reverts back to more standard shounen stuff (but has best character Bisky so it's still fun), and then furry hell is the main reason this series is so highly regarded and basically a show of its own

last arc is pretty fun and cute, nice way to wind down after furry hell and also it introduces a trans girl who is incomparably more powerful than any other mortal being so it has good real life educational value too

You can't tell with the still image but everything done by this director is far more vibrant and expressive than your average anime. Every character looks different and the main character has basically infinite expressions. Look up 'top 100 akko faces' for examples from the guys last show

Now you may think this isn't relevant to her being 'fluffy' or not but the point is how dare you

Since this is the anime thread, I'll just post about what anime I watched.

I watched the db super broly movie. It was okay, mostly consisted of guys hitting each other for like 20 minutes with occasional "holy shit that guy is strong" monologues in between.

Damn if the animation wasn't top tier.

I haven't watched DBZ in a while and never "seriously", but I have a definite soft spot for the series as it's part of my childhood.

you might be into HxH, since it takes the "Goku complex" places and starts to interrogate the nature of a character like that.
