It's a really interesting and insightful book that explores the different factors that have lead to Japan's current sociopolitical struggles.

I already said this in the discord but I just "finished" Hoshiai no Sora, or Stars Align

It was a really good show, a very grounded anime which heavily touches on parental abuse, troubles when growing up, the value of having friends to support you, and some LGBT issues (particularly wrt gender identity). However, apparently the show got axed from 24 episodes to 12 episodes. Taken from here

In the unlikely event you haven’t heard what befell Hoshiai no Sora, I recommend you check our Akane Kazuki’s twitter feed. It’s a long story, but the gist of it is short – the production committee fucked him and his series over. (...) As to the specifics here, again – Akane-sensei’s twitter is the best source. But what matters is that this series was originally slated for 24 episodes, and was in production for over two years working under that assumption. Then, a few months ago, the production committee arbitrarily canceled the second cour (before the show had ever aired, mind you). It was too late to re-work the narrative without coming up with something completely disjointed, so Akane decided to finish what he’d started and make the first cour of the series in more or less its original form. That explains the ending you saw today – and it also explains why he opened up so many plot threads, seemingly too many for a one-cour series.

So in short, a work which I deem a welcome change in anime, one which touched upon mature and serious matters in a proper and grounded way, has been left at an almost comical cliff hanger. Still, I recommend the show, even though you'll be left feeling incredibly unsatisfied given all the abandoned plot threads.

more or less. but I'm not a fan of the use of "shit", even if some anime nerd is going to tell me technically that's the accurate translation bla blah learn context it's a cute show about witches. mild swearing is fine but leave the harsher words out because it's tonally off with the rest of the program

There's a few instances now where fansubs > official subs, like for instance the Asenshi release for LWA or Komorebi for Violet Evergarden. The former cuz the subs actively misrepresent the core part that the entire show/world/magic system hinges on, the latter cuz the official release fails to capture Violet's state-of-mind and robotic communication.

Translators/localizers basically get shit pay and work with shitty schedules, esp with simulcasts, and that'll show.

Even with most stuff getting simulcast there's the occasional show with really bad official subs (as in, too literal/stilted, unnatural English besides just mistakes) so there are still people fixing them up and I'm glad. Hakumei & Mikochi and Revue Starlight are the other big ones I can think of recently
