sounds like they needed something dramatic to happen, to shake up this group of bodyswapping teens, but since they already established that being killed in explosions doesn't stick, they needed it to be something else
for a shake up there needs to be a status quo

but there is none
the amount of stuff that happens in just 4 episodes is roughly the same as what happens in 20 of any other anime

the series *needs* there to be something amazing, upsetting, incredible every episode.

But it's not like Gurren Lagann where it continuously escalates according to a pattern, according to an internal logic.

Because there is no logic

That’s actually a good idea.

So let’s talk about something complicated.

Image

Violet Evergarden is blunt and delicate.
It’s beautiful and... overwrought.

I considered words other than “overwrought”, thinking it was perhaps a bit much.
But the series itself is a bit much.

It is in essence about the difficulty of putting emotions into words, how hard it can be to express how you feel. It fits in then with other Kyoto Animation contemporaries like Hibike! Euphonium and Koe No Katachi.

But whereas those works’ presentation and settings are grounded and nuanced, Violet instead is

Extravagant.

Yet what it has to say is plain and simple.

Violet Evergarden is a young woman who's known nothing but war. She was raised as a "weapon", until she eventually came under the care of Major Gilbert Bougainvillea.

He gave her a name and taught her how to read and write.

Then, as they're attacking an enemy stronghold she loses both him and her arms.
After the war she rehabilitates, both physically and emotionally, and learns how to type letters with her new prosthetic arms.

Where once she used her arms to take lives, now she uses them to bring people together as an "Auto Memory Doll".
Throughout the series she has to cope with her loss and learn how to express not just her own, but other people's emotions as well.

--

Halfway through my first watch of the series Kyoto Animation was hit by a horrific attack which hurt and killed many of its employees.
To have that happen to people who brought me so much joy, who have continued to shape how I approach storytelling.

It is hard to put to words how that made me feel.

To that, Violet Evergarden, with all its baroque, post-processed splendour, answers with a to-the-point:

“Say it.”

Use as many words as you need, or as few. Be as theatrical as you like, painting your message with vibrant colours and ornate designs.

Or don’t be.

You’re okay either way.

With all its painstaking attention to audiovisual detail it is blunt when handling themes like survivor’s guilt and trauma.
Yet underneath the flowing dresses, the simulated camera effects and high emotion dialogue its messages still ring true.

You’re okay Violet Evergarden.

Sharing this show that I love has been a constant state of laughing our asses off at the ridiculousness and from this point on in the show it just keeps getting more mental.

oh right, some quick thoughts about Kimetsu no Yaiba seeing how I finished this a short while back:

It's good but not great.

The basic premise is fairly standard shounen battle anime with "but what if the monsters were people" and the adjacent "but what if we're the monsters".

And it manages to scratch the surface on those questions but doesn't delve into them enough to explore the ramifications.
It probably doesn't help that this is not at all a complete adaptation so maybe further in the manga it starts to really get to the meat of it.

As it stands it's just a cut above what you'd expect, with potential left hanging. Nezuko, the sister who gets turned into a demon, especially gets the short end of the stick, even though she's like the personification of the show's themes.

Full Metal Alchemist and HxH have really spoiled me :-I

this is... uh... not awful?

like I know what is happening on-screen and have a rudimentary idea of why they're happening.

in short: the gang has crashlanded on Earth for... reasons. Things went wrong so they need to go through enemy terrain to get to their destination.
I don't know exactly why they're on Earth because shit still happens at breakneck speed. But I was able to discern where a plot thread might go and the series met my expectations.

the worldbuilding, politics, physics and everything are still lmao, and it keeps throwing in backstories for characterization but it... works.

Like I can tell what the intended emotional response is of a scene and I respond accordingly.

I'm not sure whether I'm surprised or disappointed.

am I being lulled into a false sense of security?
where's the part where it goes batshit again?
or am I now just used to it?

been watching s2 of that and I hit the point where I've just given up as the series does not care at all.

I had a similar thing happen with Code Geass, but here it's a bit more potent as it's more mean spirited(?)

idk, like the lack of care for well thought out characterization and respectful treatment of people within the narrative has just gotten to me after it decided it was a good idea to have soldiers shoot up an entire school of teenagers for the stupidest fucking reasons

I watched all of Zombieland Saga last night, straight through. That was fun! I'm glad I waited so long to see it, because the second season is scheduled for sometime this year.

Lily is the most powerful being on earth and she's defeated irl politicians, but Tae is just barely my favorite. I can't believe they hired the original Sailor Moon actress and all her lines are gurgle crack urgh nom.

Anime recommendation that I wanna toss out:

Terrestrial Defense Corp. Dai-Guard

Basic synopsis - In 2018, earthquake off the coast of Japan causes an alien kaijuu, dubbed a "heterodyne," to appear and begin attacking the country. Left with little to no options to stop the creature, the military employs an "OE (Over-Explosion) Bomb" against the creature (basically a nuke in terms of destructive power, but without the nasty radioactive fallout). The creature is destroyed, but the price in human life is steep. To defend against such attacks in the future, the Japanese military commissions 21st Century Defense Security Corporation to create a giant robot to fight off any future heterodynes.

However, no more heterodynes appear. Eventually, the military forces 21st CDSC to buy back the robot, and not having anything else to do with a 25 meter tall robot, the company eventually relegates it to their second public relations division as a kind of corporate mascot, and life goes on.

And then in 2030, during a Security Expo, a heterodyne appears and attacks, and the mothballed robot is taken into battle against it.

It's a fun series that does some interesting things with the genre. Pretty much the entire cast are adults with normal day jobs, and a lot of the plot for the 26 episode series revolves more around the politics surrounding the deployment of a giant robot weapon system by a civilian contractor and the internal business politics of a board of directors trying to protect their bottom line while their employees are out trying to protect civilian lives and costing the company tons of money in the process.

Also, there's the comedy gold involving watching what is essentially a super robot stuck stumbling around in a world that operates on real robot physics.

Also, it's got a kicking rad opening theme that burrows into your brain and won't leave:

It's a pretty old series, so it might be a bit hard to track down, but it's definitely worth watching at least once if you can find it.

episode 5 is a riot holy shit

BNA has a very Little Witch Academia kinda feel to it, where every episode explores the story's core themes through a specific lens.
In ep 5 that lens being a baseball tournament.

It's smart writing, keeping the arc contained within the 23 min runtime, while adding bits and pieces of worldbuilding and verisimilitude that adds to the overarching plot and fleshes out its messaging.

It's really ambitious, taking on discrimination, racism, etc but it's pulling it off so far.

Episode 4 is still the standout I feel, but 5 gets props for still ringing true amidst all the beautiful Trigger chaos.
