1. social media IS bad because it's based entirely around companies getting your info so they can advertise to you, this forum is not. Social Media Reddit is the only one that isn't just that, as far as I know, but it's also a really bad design for reading conversations :-I
Reddit might've been less of a data hog at one point, but the transformation they went through in 2017-2018 makes me think that they're just like the others now. That period is when they stopped making their code open source, started pushing the official mobile app, redesigned the site to be friendly to mobile users, and started pumping up their own valuation in round after round of venture capital.

social media is also by design addictive and makes you feel bad about your life etc. because you start inevitably comparing yourself to other people's prettified representations of their likely not particularly amazing lives. it also exposes its users to an information overload that our brains were never designed to handle. social media is a perfect tool for manipulating people's opinions on a massive scale.

forums do not have any of these inherent design problems because they weren't invented for the sole purpose of making increasingly more money with increasingly evil ways. Facebook has literally helped dictatorships rise to power and just kind of went "oops? we're really sowwy, we made a fucky-wucky. we're sorrrrry." in response

Even as today forum software (like phpbb) increasingly adopt social media like features like mentions and the dopamine hit inducing notification system, it's not because they want to farm people's attention like Google or Facebook, it's because some has set the expectation that you need to be instantly notified if someone talks to or at you.

personally, I think a "gamified" forum system is an easily solvable problem, so I'm not some total curmudgeon who hates everything new. I like having notifications and mentions and 11 billion distinct ratings that literally mean nothing. part of that is conditioning, but a part of it is lazy convenience: no more having to manually look thru threads like some rube to find if somebody quoted me. nah, let computers do that work for you instead

but a system that rewarded activity to a cap each day in some way (even lurking)? that's teetering close to farming for attention, but if the rewards are strictly confined to the forum (like a virtual currency, I know I'm being terrible for even suggesting this) then I don't see the problem. it would drive up engagement and potentially attract a new audience for forums. I'd like someone to try that experiment

Facepunch Studios' forum sort of tried that but then Garry just went nah and closed it down, but it was kind of neat getting worthless virtual coins and buying a gold name or a miniprofile background with it or something. it made contributing feel like it was more worth the effort too.

Anyway, in terms of social media that doesn't demand all your data and stuff, there is the Twitter-like Mastodon. Sometimes I still feel like it'd be interesting to set up an official TRS Mastodon instance, but I honestly don't feel like I'd use it, since even with all the improvements vs. Twitter I think I still prefer talking to one specific community vs. everyone out there.

social media is kinda really inherently bad where the user and what they want to express are the product.
But otoh that doesn't mean you can't have meaningful interactions on them with other likeminded people, nor does it devalue those interactions.

Going by personal experience I've found some really cool artists on Twitter, I follow a few writers and directors whose insights are really cool, etc.

I prefer forums or Discord servers though cuz there's a sense of place to them. Forums, subforums, topics and servers and channels are like houses or parks or cafes you can visit and all the previous chats you had in there are still preserved.

Social media doesn't have that, it has a business model that revolves around a timeline that's constantly being updated with all the "best things that your friends are doing".
So you get this fear of missing out.

You know what pisses me off and makes me a boomer? How shitty imgur got. Holy fuck its mobile support makes Reddit mobile saint-like. To see a full image at this point, you have to "request desktop site" and I'm on my phone like all the time. My desktop is basically for games and work only at this point.

So they want you to download that shitty app and ooh boy did it make me mad one time when I did because it sets your posts to "public" by default and yeah when I was trying to post something silly one time, it showed me that I had posted it publicly and I had a bunch of their shithead users make snide comments on my image.

Oh fuck that. I never rated an app 1 star before that. I'm eternally pissed at imgur and I will be a boomer and hate it for the rest of my days.

Oh, but Fontra, don't you just want to download their app? Download the app and all your troubles with the site (that they created on purpose to make people download the app) will go away!

But yeah, seriously, their mobile site is the worst.

Reddit is kinda a weird hybrid.

It runs on ads and a system where users "gild" each other with Reddit Gold or Silver that you can buy.

Then there's subreddits that are super niche, specialized and p much removed from everything that goes on on the frontpage.
And you can get legit good advice from some of them.

At the same time the big subreddits are giant echochambers, there's often brigading between subreddits, a ton of astroturfing and propaganda.

ofc governments and intelligence agencies are keeping a v close eye on it too

And I say all that as someone who once subscribed to their pro service, back when they were an image host first and foremost. Back then you could pay them money in exchange for better services, such as having more images in your gallery and having no ads when using Imgur! Then they took that away (perhaps to negotiate better advertising rates), took away interesting features like viewership analytics, added the comment section that's a cross between the worst of Reddit and Twitter, and just generally made the site worse overall. It's enough to where I wonder if they're circling the drain every time something of theirs changes.

Before that, Acmlm's forum from whenever ago had that functionality just baked in. You could customize each post utterly, so you would always post with DRIPPING BLOODY LETTERS in a GRAVEYARD BACKGROUND and MAYBE THERE'S GHOSTS TOO and I was surprised no other forums software ever went that way again. I'm sure there were some security issues since they basically let you script your posts but heck it was fun

What even is reddit silver/gold/platinum anyway? like, I know a lot of people make up stories just to try to 'farm' for them, but do they even get you anything or is it just "me getting these tiny medals next to my posts feeds me"

To be fair to reddit, it has the best Fire Emblem advice I could find on the internet outside Serene's Forest in its heyday. Even goons cocked that up hard for me back when I hung out more on SA.

Anyway back on topic: it probably isn't worth reworking the whole code and layout of the site at this point. I mean as people pointed out, it's not like we're attracting any new blood.

I guess I just felt a bit weird about it the other day.

Tight-knit fansites cropping up and then fading away as the subject of their fandom loses relevance until all the users are just a small group of friends bullshitting is a pretty natural cycle on the internet. You only avoid that if you're talking about some juggernaut franchise that never actually dies. It's nothing to be too down about, really.
