they could've literally made a game with an all-new cast and it would've been better and more interesting. hell, they could've still had their nonsensical cycle of revenge story, but just hid that until like the last bits of the game where you playing as Abby finally realize you were hunting down Joel and Ellie all along instead of this dumb attempt at narrative depth by going half-and-half with it

I agree, if spec ops came out some other time, devoid of context, it'd be absolutely without merit and just "we forced you to do bad thing, feel bad". As it is, though, it's perfectly fine as a criticism of the genre, and works because at the same, the people who would play it would be the kind that would do those things without really thinking about it. I mean, it came out in an era where "No Russian" was the top talking point, and people were praising the devs for "making real drama" or whatever

Spec-Ops wears its inspiration on its sleeve and is not the most insightful bit of commentary, but I appreciate it for trying to do something different, being committed to it and getting its message across in ways that only a game can really do.

I started replaying it to test my Steam Link and feel like just continuing.

got a random reminder of this, but the spec-ops(2012) moral event horizon moment of using white phosphorus on your enemies was a giant blatant call out at homefront(2011) a bad call of duty clone that used the same as a 'cool way to clear out a firefight'

it's basically just standard old call of duty "follow your squad mates through a level while they open the doors" linear gameplay with the stupidest possible story applied around it (although they somehow managed to make the story for the sequel even stupider).

also at one point in the white phosphorous level you are defending a Hooters from north korea because the game has REAL BRANDS

if you do play it, the second level is the one that ends with PRESS F TO HIDE IN MASS GRAVE so you don't really need to play past that point unless you really want to see that Hooters

Also, Spec-Ops's lesson on glorifying war crimes basically didn't stick for long, and recently we got a Call of Duty game where white phosphorus is a fucking killstreak bonus you can deploy in multiplayer.
