Re: The Last Bronycon: A Fandom Autopsy
My only engagement with Fallout Equestria was when Pacce wrote a spinoff fic and got Mad Max to do the cover illustration and then art for an ask blog. I somehow stumbled across the latter and read through it, mainly for the art.

Re: The Last Bronycon: A Fandom Autopsy
Past Sins is only bad insofar as it's overly melodramatic and angsty and because people really focus on that imagery of Twilight being led to the gallows, as opposed to outright vile and reprehensible like a lot of FOE.

Re: The Last Bronycon: A Fandom Autopsy
The best description of FOE is still what Fontra said about it back in the day, which I saved because of what a great quote it is:
Fallout: Equestria is the epitome of a fanfiction that understands neither franchises it is crossing over. Not only is it actually needlessly more dark than MLP, it is actually darker than the regular Fallout franchise. The idea itself is disgusting in that it is a bunch of grown adults taking a cartoon aimed at young kids and corrupting it for the sake of making it more 'adult' and 'manly' by putting it in a needlessly dark and violent setting.
I'd feel a little less-inclined to hate it if it even was just Fallout characters that somehow get into Equestria (as bad as that still sounds.) But no, it is actually using the setting of Equestria and molding it to fit the setting of someone's inaccurate interpretation of both Fallout and My Little Pony. This and the fact that this got so popular in the fandom that it’s nearly a staple is the reason I and many others tend to hate it more than other crossover fanfictions.

I had an idea to make a silly FO:E CYOA happening in New Pegasus and I'd just be poking fun at the whole thing but I have never read a single word of FO:E and it was just too much effort and I couldn't be arsed.

Oh, hi. This video made me nostalgic in ways I really didn't expect, not least at all because I hung out with Jenny a little bit at Bronycon 2013.
Now I kinda wish I worked harder to make it out to the 2019 Bronycon. Oh well.

The "Best Related Work" category is where it would end up. Lindsay Ellis's amazing 3-part video essay on The Hobbit trilogy was nominated last year, only losing out to AO3, which is fair enough.

AO3 as in the fanfiction site? Like, just all of it?Perpetual Motion wrote: ↑Sun Aug 02, 2020 1:54 amThe "Best Related Work" category is where it would end up. Lindsay Ellis's amazing 3-part video essay on The Hobbit trilogy was nominated last year, only losing out to AO3, which is fair enough.

Re: The Last Bronycon: A Fandom Autopsy
Didn't Fallout: Equestria start getting written in January 2011, or possibly even back in 2010? There would have been barely any source material from FiM to work off of back then, so I guess padding it out using every possible scrap of content from the games was necessary to feed the insane hype back then.

the show being in season 1 didn't stop people from writing stuff without having to resort to gamifying their stories

She could even make her own special ammo for it with Junk Rounds, so she could get in some reload dashing.

A reaction video to the Hugo Awards being nominated for a Hugo Award seems a little redundant.

Re: The Last Bronycon: A Fandom Autopsy
from the blog wrote: We were treated to tales of how Martin is Just Like Us while he was broadcasting from the movie theater he owns for funsies. I lost count of how many times he mentioned that fandom used to be so much smaller that Worldcon was in a hotel and that there was a banquet with rubbery chicken (no one cares).
Because it’s such a goddamn fucking shame that fandom is so much larger and diverse than it was 50 fucking years ago. Because the people nominated for and winning awards aren’t exclusively white and male. The first woman to win a Hugo Award–in any category–was Anne McCaffrey, who tied with Philip José Farmer in 1968 for her novella, “Weyr Search.” The first Hugo Award was given out in 1953. It was fifteen years before a woman won. Four-time nominee James Davis Nicoll has done more work in this area than I have, and I recommend that y’all look very closely at that giant table of doom.
I’ve done a bit of searching–not much–and I can’t find a comparable analysis around race and the Hugos. But I can say that N.K. Jemisin was the first Black person to win the Hugo for Best Novel. In 2016.
There was also a whole segment about the Oscar statuette and its crotch. It was gender essentialist and transphobic. It was so gross I don’t even want to talk about it to be honest. CoNZealand tweeted a non-apology apology about it to people who were offended. I’m not particularly gender non-conforming, but if that segment made me feel gross and unwelcome, imagine how it made not only the trans and other gender non-conforming nominees feel, but also all those who were watching. It was a gigantic “fuck you, you’re not welcome here.”
real classy to usurp Jemisin’s achievement by talking about the dead old racist white man who wrote the classic “maybe fascism is good, actually” polemic called Starship Troopers and who decided he needed to write an entire novel of time traveling incest porn (Time Enough for Love). Some dude in my high school insisted Heinlein was a genius and that I needed to read that book in particular. It’s the only book I’ve ever just outright thrown in the trash out of disgustSpeaking of Jemisin, Martin made the decision to first mention her unprecedented accomplishment of winning the Best Novel three years in a row–no one else of any race or gender has ever accomplished a Best Novel hat trick–and then attempt to undermine it by talking at great length the time Heinlein won three Hugos in nine years, culminating in some sort of shaggy dog story involving a white dinner jacket and Stranger in a Strange Land. I’ve forgotten the details because Heinlein is irrelevant to the discussion.
I hope this wins because everyone involved with putting on last year’s Hugos and GRRM in particular deserve the embarrassment, sorry Jenny Nicholson (not that she will ever see or read my dumb post on a dead pony forum )

While the convention claims to have provided an agnostic platform, at least one attendee had their Zoom background censored for showing support for Black Lives Matter and opposition to the Uighur genocide happening in China.

Re: The Last Bronycon: A Fandom Autopsy
Martin has always come across as kind of a hack anyway. Like, I haven't actually read his books or watched that show that's based on them, but as far as I can tell, they're responsible for the whole big push in fantasy fandom circles towards "historical accuracy" that overwhelmingly focuses on stuff like "women didn't have rights and also were getting raped all the time." He's probably going to die before he gets around to finishing the series, and good riddance to that.
I bet "R.R." isn't even his real middle name!
