I suppose having seen plenty of horselike MLP art over the years has inured me to the off-putting effect of a toony character rendered realistically. Considering my aesthetic, though, maybe others with different tastes don't feel that feeling quite so strongly.

It's the art of the card Naga Vitalist in particular.

Magic has 37 printed naga and I'd say zero boobs between them but I'm not sure about the sibsig behind Sidisi.

The Orochi of Kamigawa do have boobs, however:

They also have lots of limbs, which is weird for what are supposed to be snake people.

I just personally think it's fun when artists get more creative with their anthropomorphic takes on animals beyond "put big ol titties on everything"

but the sky's the limit and indulge yourself as you please

Heh, thanks! :modesty:

In all seriousness, these things should depend on the characters and what they're like, not just because they happen to be this specific gender.

my stance is this:
if you are a character designer for a major franchise, then yes, for your fantasy race where the men are extremely different than human men, it's preferable you don't just take the human woman model, change the head and the skin texture, and call it a day.

however, as an individual affirmation of self-expression or as something aspirational, reptile boobs are extremely important and valid

Having only been exposed to the former for a long time, it took me a similarly long time to understand the latter case was anything more than that sort of lazy character design and to learn to distinguish one from the other. I've now known for several years to always look at who's behind any given character and to try to understand that person's motivation. It took me a long time to unlearn the goony-ass way of snap judgement that I learned as a teenager, though. :wat:

I think I have some personal experience in that regard, too. Something that always worries me IRL is whether I'd be perceived as a threat of any sort. I'm a man, I'm white, I'm fairly big, I have been told I have a voice deep enough to be intimidating... I understand all the physical and societal factors as to why I might have to be seen as dangerous at first glance, but I still feel awful about it regardless.

I think some of that may have factored into how I present myself online. In my art I usually try to appear as kind and cheerful, funny and non-threatening, and I'd like to think I have largely succeeded. I wish for a world where I don't have to be seen as a threat, so when it comes to how I choose to appear, online at least I can make that so.

In this vein, I find myself often thinking back to this post. It might seem of little matter, but I've taken a lot of heart in Gloomy Rube so matter-of-factly stating "you're a gray pony" in response to me there.

No reason why it should seem of little matter! That sort of affirmation is important.

Though I've always seen Perry as a full-sized anthro birb rather than a tiny keyboard-pecking birb.

I guess this is character design in general, although it fits with the current discussion. On Facebook I talked about how most of my characters seems to be girls (which lead to a bunch of guys saying they have mostly female characters, with even some women saying they draw dudes more).

One cartoonist left this comment:
Image

I'm tempted to ask "WHY do all the female characters have to have hour-glass figures?"

Male characters are the default in our patriarchal cultural landscape. If a small set of specific design aspects is needed to signify a character as female then those become constraints when trying to do anything different with them.

To be clear, this isn't me endorsing the status quo.

If I were to think of you as something other than how I've met you IRL, your old ponysona comes most readily to mind. You've not really strongly associated yourself with a character that's you if you were a cat or some other cartoon animal, though. You've used plenty of your characters for your avatars here, on Discord, etc., but they're themselves, not you. That's how I feel, at least.
