John Oliver just did a segment on rat erotica that was featured on a public access station auction in the 90s...
He offered to pay $1000 if someone can deliver one of the pieces to him (plus $20,0000 to their local food bank).

I'm pretty sure a furry news site found & interviewed the artist who drew those rats.

On the one hand I partially agreed with that thread on Twitter that it’s a furry cultural artefact and so should belong to someone in the community rather than someone that’s going to use it for a five second gag and then it’ll probably never be seen again.
But then I learned the artist also drew some very, very skeevy shit, and you know what, if John Oliver wants to be associated with that, he can go ahead.

I don't think that an art piece /should/ belong to anyone else if it was auctioned in the first place, and the rightful owner decided to sell it to John. Claiming someone else should have it is entitlement in my view.
The segments made me laugh a lot and I was delighted that they actually found it. Lately, laughs have been scarce, so personally, I love and appreciate the shit out of the fact that this happened.
I shouldn't have been surprised that Twitter found ways to get upset and entitled over this, but here we are. I am surprised. :')

quite frankly i don't care who owns a mediocre piece of furry porn, but giving this guy any publicity is shitty
and it's not like john oliver and co weren't notified after their first segment about this
they just seem to not care

RE: "he drew shitty things": Honestly, I can't care less what people draw so long as they don't shove it in faces of people who don't want to see it. If this guy never actually violated a minor (or anyone) and just drew what he drew, I'm not going to let that impact the way I feel about this particular piece, its history, and the segments it got in Last Week Tonight.
Imo though, not saying people should feel the same way I do about it.

Re: 😺😽 furry thread 2: reminder the correct pronunciation of gif is "yiff"
To clarify my point: I appreciate that there's a lot of things about the fandom which mainstream brands cannot capitalize on or commoditize. The problem is that when they do eventually attempt to capitalize on those things, the result is "uncredited mockery", as we see in this case, as we see in models of "look at this weird thing I found on the Internet" placed in art galleries with no credit to the original artist.
Ultimately yes, the original owner had full responsibility of over who they sold it to - however, if they'd also decided to auction it, I'm reasonably sure a pool of furries would have well exceeded John's offer, particularly given the number of cons and charity auctions that have been cancelled. At least until the reveal of what else the artist drew, at which point all bets would hopefully be off.

I mean, probably not shoving it in people's faces directly, but also allegedly not hiding it at all and just putting in their public gallery.Angry Critter wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 9:01 amRE: "he drew shitty things": Honestly, I can't care less what people draw so long as they don't shove it in faces of people who don't want to see it. Either the owner didn't decide to auction it, which is their choice, or it has been auctioned and/or traded and the community just didn't show up for it. Either way, the original auction was like 28 years ago? Plenty of time to chase it if they really wanted it and even so, it's still not a guarantee they'd get it of course... Cause the person who bought it owns it!
I also don't really get the 'Nobody else got a chance to get it, but really all things considered nobody really wants it anyway' point to begin with?
And yeah, putting cub stuff in a public gallery where it's against the rules and such things aren't to be expected is pretty shitty. I hope mods stepped in in that case. If they didn't, that's pretty shitty too.

It wasn’t cub, it's worse - the kind of worse that would make it definitively illegal in some countries. I have no idea what site it was hosted on or if it was self hosted or something.

Re: 😺😽 furry thread 2: reminder the correct pronunciation of gif is "yiff"
Mmmh, yikes...
Well, either way, personally I'm not against people drawing literally anything. It's still something they apparently need to express. The human psyche can be or get to be all sorts of fucked up, and you can't just tell these people to unexist or cease being a certain way. You can however tell them to find a non-harmful way to deal with it, which could be drawing. So long as uh... Yeah... They don't showcase that inappropriately... <_< That's just my (probably controversial) opinion though.
Idk I'm kind of a seperate art from the artist kinda person myself. Art says a lot about the artist, but I don't really feel like getting all fundamentalist or otherwise meta about what kind of art by whom I allow myself to enjoy. It's unfortunate the artist of the rat erotica is apparently a shady creep, but I still enjoyed the segment in Last Week Tonight when I saw it and I can't really pretend that I didn't, nor do I really feel like retroactively changing the way I feel about it.
I kinda cherish the few laughs I get at the moment.
Sorry if this is too heated for PPPP btw? I'm not really sure about the board's standards and norms anymore.

Re: 😺😽 furry thread 2: reminder the correct pronunciation of gif is "yiff"
It came to my attention yesterday that the character from the Sailor Moon Redraw meme is named Usagi. And I happened to be working on a character sheet for my own usagi character at the time, so I done did what I had to done do.
Aaaaand a smooth-shaded variation because I wasn't sure I liked how the other one looked.
Turns out I did, but it was worth it for the practice anyway.
