Nope. This one:
Lights on Quest Mountain
The big reptile is named Sars. On the cover, he looks like a monster. (Big ol' mouth!) The interior art is a whole other thing. Just look at this hunk of scaley beefcake:
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4367724/
The interior art is crazy inconsistent. In most images, Sars has a tail, but not in this one!
Anyway, I first read/played this book in the first or second grade. I found it in the school library. That's the Minnesota school I remember fondly, not the wretched Tennessee school I would later attend.
Over a decade later I need a fursona so I can get on FurryMuck, and a certain mental image floats up from my subconscious. Clearly I had found my True Inner Self. I took the fandom name "Sarrathos", and proceeded to be too shy to talk to anyone, even online.
A decade after that, a friend is trying to unload some old books, and what do you know, one of them is Lights on Quest Mountain! I remembered there being a lizard man in this book. I did not realize that Sarrathos looked exactly like Sars. My Original Character (do not steal) wasn't even original! The name even started with S-A-R!
But I'm not changing my fursona now. Not unless TSR/Wizards/Hasbro decides to C&D me.
Man, just typing this got me all emotional.

Does your fursona have the rock hard lizard nipples too?

Got an email from Anthro Northwest
Bad news: my application for Vendor's room has been declined
Good news: I was pre-approved for Artist's Alley
So I'll probably register for that instead once they send the form in!

At least she actually has a pelvis. When I woke up this morning and was reading back through last night on Discord, someone on the BronyCon server had posted a picture that I genuinely had to stop and boggle at for a while over the anatomy.Orange Fluffy Sheep wrote: βMon Jan 21, 2019 8:54 amaint no rule against being mostly thigh by body mass
I wonder what it says about me that my first reaction to any picture is to analyze it for technique and style that I could break down and possibly absorb into my own.

Re: πΊπ½ furry thread 2: reminder the correct pronunciation of gif is "yiff"
But yeah, my thought process re: what I said earlier, illustrated:
This was originally posted unsourced, likely because digging up the source leads to an inaccessible Tumblr blog. Divers beware.
I see this as I'm scrolling through my backlog today and my first thought is, what's up with her legs and pelvis? Am I missing something here? So I stop and try to figure it out, wondering if I could learn something from it, eventually coming up with this:
It wasn't until after doing this that it occured to me that it's likely a deliberate exaggeration to look vaguely more feminine, etc., but to me it mostly just looked awkward.
I've had a friend tell me I'm likely asexual. This is the sort of experience that makes me wonder if that's true.

Re: πΊπ½ furry thread 2: reminder the correct pronunciation of gif is "yiff"
The legs look like an attempt to mimick a horse's leg bones:
...or more specifically, to give more thigh definition to the bend MLP legs have:
Seems to me that the main problem is the humerus not really being well-positioned to hold up the weight of the body above it unless she has some really strong lats.
Also she would probably tip forward with the legs that far back, but maybe her tail is very heavy.

It's an enemy from RPG Maker 3, i.e. the one on the Playstation.
It's stuck with me because it's some sort of super computer that is writhing around on cable-tentacles with a monitor that displays a screaming face.
I hope more of your works include elements from this, such as: technological nightmare, screaming faces, colored lights that display inscrutable information.

Re: πΊπ½ furry thread 2: reminder the correct pronunciation of gif is "yiff"
hmm, it didn't really look awkward to me at first glance, or even at seventh glance. like yeah it's obviously not anatomically correct to RL or even to a 'realistic' anthro horse but, i mean, it's mlp, anatomical veracity isn't what you paid for. as a translation of a mlp style pony to a (yes, wide-hipped and slender-waisted) anthro, it works pretty well for me.
i have seen some unwitting anatomical horrors and this isn't near to being one of them

Re: πΊπ½ furry thread 2: reminder the correct pronunciation of gif is "yiff"
Yeah, it isn't wrong (there's a different thread for that) or anything. I honestly thought it was an interesting anthro(-ish) design and wanted to figure it out, but I was stuck on whether hips wide enough vs. the waist to make me wonder if she even had a pelvis were really necessary as an adaptation for standing upright. That it was likely purposefully exaggerated a bit flew way over my head, but I think that says more about me and my eye for detail than anything.

Every time I see an anthro with a navel it looks odd. For some reason it makes me think βwouldnβt fur or hair be covering that upβ and then my brain starts chasing itself in circles like a small exhausted dog. I have no idea why a trivial stylistic quirk/preference does this to me

Re: πΊπ½ furry thread 2: reminder the correct pronunciation of gif is "yiff"
Just to pick one other example, muscular definition should be relatively hard to make out on cats and dogs with even a moderate coat length, yet you see anthro wolves and huskies with visible six-packs all the damn time. There are artists who will, for example, have a chest be a broad ruff of fur rather than individually chiseled pecs, and it's cool to see that, but I don't expect it. My brain's gotten pretty good at mentally filling in the assumption of fur even where there's smooth shading or flat color that wouldn't otherwise suggest it. I had this illustrated (so to speak) recently, when I shared a picture of Catty from Undertale with a friend of mine, and it came out that they saw her as smooth-skinned, which completely blew my mind. I was like "wait, you don't automatically parse her body surface as fur? She's a cat!"Madeline wrote: βWed Jan 23, 2019 7:23 amEvery time I see an anthro with a navel it looks odd. that being said, equines (with the exceptions of the shaggier ones) are probably one of the sorts where you could credibly expect to make out details through the short coats, just like you can pretty well make out some good muscle definition on a lot of RL horses

Re: πΊπ½ furry thread 2: reminder the correct pronunciation of gif is "yiff"
That's what I was thinking in regards to what Madeline said. Most of our fellow placental mammals have a longer coat than ours, enough to hide details like the navel, but ponies have much shorter fur. Add to that a flatter abdomen from being given a more humanoid body type and I figure anthro ponies would have theirs prominent enough, at least.Bigdog wrote: βWed Jan 23, 2019 3:38 pmthat being said, equines (with the exceptions of the shaggier ones) are probably one of the sorts where you could credibly expect to make out details through the short coats, just like you can pretty well make out some good muscle definition on a lot of RL horses

Re: πΊπ½ furry thread 2: reminder the correct pronunciation of gif is "yiff"
I concur but I also concur that it still looks wrong on a more personal level because cartoon ponies don't have navels and it adds a strange degree of realism that doesn't fit with the very stylized takes, at least for me

Re: πΊπ½ furry thread 2: reminder the correct pronunciation of gif is "yiff"
it would for sure look weird to me if a straight up FiM style pony like this
Also, looking at it some more, the bend in the legs of the cheerleader pic do look wrong when I think about it. Like yes, digitigrade legs do make an S curve, but the knee shouldn't be below the 'ankle' unless the character is actually supposed to be kneeling down, which the rest of that pic doesn't really convey to me. that's completely separate from the hip/pelvis controversy tho
rolled over and there was a navel there, but by the time you've anthro-ized it and added details to so many other parts of the scene (dem feathers tho) we're already defining "cartoon pony" down by quite a bit, so I'm a lot more willing to roll with the bellybutton thing at that point

Re: πΊπ½ furry thread 2: reminder the correct pronunciation of gif is "yiff"
Some of that likely comes from how I drew the skeleton lines. For the sake of simplicity I'd drawn it as it is, but in reality a horse's tibia and fibula connect a bit below the hock (the tip of the "foot" structure, equivalent to the end of our heel). She still has that part of her legs bent inwards a bit, but I figure that's mostly just a consequence of greatly simplifying a horse's hind legs for the sake of the show and then stretching them back out for the sake of anthro-ifying said cartoon horse.Bigdog wrote: βWed Jan 23, 2019 5:55 pmAlso, looking at it some more, the bend in the legs of the cheerleader pic do look wrong when I think about it. Re: πΊπ½ furry thread 2: reminder the correct pronunciation of gif is "yiff"
Fun fact: Horses don't have collarbones. Their shoulders consist of very strong muscles, tendons, and ligaments, giving them great flexibility. I wonder now if, given an upright stance and the evolution of those forelegs into arms, anthro ponies would have to work a noticeable amount to maintain enough upper-body strength to keep their arms working properly.

One of my characters proved to be popular with artists I was streaming with yesterday: Chiro, the bat in my comic. I got a ton of fanart of her! Thought I'd share a few:
Myeecez
Chaoko
CaffeineRabbit
Muggy
This was my response:
