I recall there was an animator named Xenia DeMattia. One of the few female animators working on 1960s cartoons

I feel like it's kind of cheating to include Chinese names because someone just decided one day that we should use X to mean the "sh" sound when Romanizing Chinese even though I don't think that's ever been the case anywhere in the actual Roman-alphabet-using world
Same with using Q to mean "ch" like OK am I supposed to spell it "Qina" now or what

Tag yourself I'm Xzander, a name which apparently can't be used for any binary-gendered people.
Very math.

I recall that "Xander" is a common shortened name for Alexander.

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
Try to organize textures, materials, and meshes in a game project, as well as the objects in a scene (for example in Unity).
Whatever you do it's wrong.
If you have your textures, materials, and meshes in one "package" folder and THEN you share the same texture with another thing, then the "package" policy of having self-contained packages is violated, as a form of organization.
If you have all things separated in a Textures, Meshes, and Materials folder, then it gets cluttered very easy, like in every Linux file system.
Also each downloaded thing from the Unity Asset store has their own style of organization.
And in the scene hierarchy grouping can be a performance hit if done too much. Each group is a "Transform" (a 4x4 matrix) and it's always used to transform (move, rotate, scale) the polygons. So nesting too many of them make too many unnecessary calculations and even worse is that each change flags the part of hierarchy as "dirty" and has to be re-evaluated. The most common thing is to have as few as possible nested grouping and use "empty" transforms as separators between major categories of game objects.
And then there is the code itself and naming of classes and variables and organizing them in namespaces is a challenge in itself.
You can get sometimes insane making sane decisions.

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
While we're at it, for the most part Japanese names are written in English almost closer to how they should be pronounced, but I never understood why the "re" sound is written as such. In Japan, they're pronounced "le", not "re".
Like "Reiko", in Japan that name would be pronounced "Leiko".
Manga artist Leiji Matsumoto was smart in insisting that they spell his first name with an "L" in official English translations of his work.

Like, there's two ways to do the r sound in english, and if you use one way, Japanese being transliterated to an R there makes no sense, and if you do it the other way, it makes perfect sense. There was a youtube video about it I watched a few years ago

it's the rolling tongue thing, if you can roll your r's then it's the way that makes the japanese sound make sense as an R and if you can't then it's the way that makes you go "why is this being anglicized as an R"

i recently read an article on this site about translation of games from/into japanese that brought up that and a few other examples
apparently Varia Suit was supposed to be Barrier Suit, but the wrong translation ended up being accepted because it sounded cooler

This article explains another point of translation that I recognized from usage, but never knew the concept behind it. Specifically, to quote myself from earlier in this thread:DaikatunaRevengeance wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2020 6:13 pmah, found the one on letters
https://legendsoflocalization.com/the-p ... anslation/
"Mobile" has the "uh" sound that doesn't exist in Japanese as explained there, so that explains why it got turned into something using an A as written by Japanese speakers, and thus why the portmanteau (using the Japanese convention of the first syllables of both words) as sent back across the Pacific could come off in the "mobile garbage" sense (using the English convention of the first syllable of the first word and the last syllable of the second word).Fizzbuzz wrote: ↑Fri May 29, 2020 5:37 pmIf you ever see anyone talking about "mobage," remember that it's a loanword from Japanese speakers who took "mobile game" as a loanword from English and then shortened it, even though it looks like it should be short for "mobile garbage" given the state of the mobile gaming ecosystem.

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
Cow Pee, I think. It’s however the old Dynasty Warriors games pronounced it, because that was my introduction to the Three Kingdoms. Just some random impulse rental from Blockbuster.
For a few years after that I participated in a forums RTK game, very loosely based on the Koei series. You’d make a character, optionally join a kingdom (mostly run by other players, but the Emperor’s faction were NPCs) and the kingdom ruler would submit kingdom turns using their officers to do stuff. In between, you’d roleplay, scheme, assassinate each other or whatever.
I got to be a kingdom ruler in one game, but it petered out after a few turns due to staff issues, I forget what, but my city was doing pretty well.

yeah my intro to it was Destiny of an Emperor for the NES so I didn't get any voice acting so for me it was Cow Pie until we got dynasty warriors later on

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
What? The thing you put over a crib is "mo-beel". As is the suffix. Weinermobile, Batmobile, etc. And Mobile, Alabama.Gloomy Rube wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2020 6:57 pmI didn't know mobile as in mobile game was supposed to be pronounced "Mo-bull" and not "Mo-Bile" like the thing that you put over a crib
Mo-bull and mo-bile are both valid pronunciations for mobile-as-in-moving/portable, although people I know seem to have standardized on the former for when it's used before the noun ("mobile home") and the latter for when it's used after ("Whoa, that statue is mobile!")
