people make fun of ace attorney's japanfornia, but the game's localization is actually pretty alright and the writing is tight.

as far as english speaking ones go of the ones i've played, lovers of aether takes 5 minutes to complete and it's a giant joke, but it mostly feels alright, others i remember being all over the place in terms of writing.

i've seen far more being played by someone else (mostly geek remix) and those varied a lot both in lenght and writing, there were a few that had pretty clever writing and one in particulary used that it's a visual novel really well (adding a lot tiny scenes to show what was happening). on the other hand i remember there being some stinkers that i didn't even bother finishing the video.

so i dunno, honestly

I played Ace Attorney Apollo Justice and it was hot garbage, the only Ace Attorney game I played. I have still a lot of hatred against that game and story after many years since I've played.

That's the impression I had, but I've never played any VNs so I didn't know if they truly were primarily Japanese. I do remember Inthesto pointing out several times how (bad) VNs written by native English speakers sound like poorly-translated Japanese, so I suppose enough come from Japan that the tone is fairly pervasive.

yeah it's what I was alluding to earlier with my mention of ellipses and all that other crap

the tone and writing style in general tends to ape translated Japanese VNs more often than not which just makes me dislike VNs even more

I've got a friend who's a librarian at University of Wisconsin. She needed a master's degree in library science to get the job, though.

seems like they were fans of me for specifically studying library and information science which is good... I guess?? idk. I know the information services desk was backed up by plenty of people with LIS master's degrees and the offices especially had multiple people with actual degrees in information related fields

I mean, I think it is pretty telling they looked at my history and basically gave me the job outright, I had an interview that was pretty much a formality

they didn't even look at my CV because the background information already had my university studies and previous stint in my hometown's library for an internship for my studies

Apollo Justice, even with good will from a diehard fan like me, isn't very impressive and clearly tries to pull itself in several directions since it was originally intended as a reboot of sorts but it fell flat

I seriously recommend just playing the first Ace Attorney, if you gel with that that's cool, if not that's also cool, but it is a way better representation of the series

kind of liking 999 despite the issues i have with it

the stupid/silly conversation about a mummy's curse and the titanic was amusing, as was funyarinpa joke

on the other hand, the narration is still too wordy and ruins the pacing

translation was very sloppily done, some baffling choices, the nationalities of the characters constantly change, as well as their gender pronouns, and well seems like the editing wasn't so hot either

The pirated restored version with the original soundtrack, I hope. Music licensing is a butt and the official releases really killed what was the best soundtrack of its generation.

I'm mostly bothered by how giant corporations specifically aim to erode the Public Domain despite, you know, them already making more money than any human being could actually spend

just google Disney and Public Domain to find plenty of examples

Fun fact: Disney got their start by using public domain properties and purposely chose Snow White for their first animated feature because it was in the public domain

if we right this moment made every movie, tv show, song or video game released before the year 2000 public domain the only one it would "hurt" is the corporations that hoard them and even then they'd barely feel it

eh, nah, there'd be exceptions of actual creator owned things, but it is a sad state of affairs when we can legitimately say that a lot of creators don't own anything they make

Nowadays a lot of comics are owned by their creators right from the start, but even back when their publisher/distributor owned it, standard practice was that the rights revert back to them X-number of years after the comic ended it run. That should be the norm, at the very least.

copyright term already differs depending of if it's creator-owned or not, iirc in most places the timer is the same, but starts ticking at death if creator-owned, or just at publication otherwise. That part is definitely fair imo
