Honestly, I relate to this. I think my comics are considered:

-Too rough for mainstream
-Too episodic/too much focus on humor for graphic novels
-Too conventional for a webcomic
-Too childish for indie

I'm kind of in a weird place with my stuff.

Interestingly, I found conventions are a good place for that; some non-nerds would go there because they don't have anything else to do that day.

If organizations with money weren't afraid of making something that didn't appeal to homophobes, Russia, and China, then maybe we could have more LGBT content than just the cheapest formats of gaming.

tbh, i wonder if that's really the reason

people make all kinds of games on a budget and yet when it comes to specifically queer games, it's always a visual novel

the only two non-vn queer games i've seen are Lucah and Secret Little Haven

at times it does feel like people have a "queer game = visual novel" view

like to give an example, a game i saw being brought up a lot a few months ago was meatpunks. from what i understand it consists of a fairly rudimentary combat system with chunky atari style pixels and the rest of the game is just a really classic visual novel (static image staring at you, text box, that stuff). Considering the game styles itself as being queer, it's not hard for me to guess why that's there.

Otherwise why isn't it delivered through emails or chatboxes (which would actually work better as a way to read dialogue), instead like this.

yeah queer games are more likely to be VNs than other genres but that's because there is still an absolutely massive time and budget gap between a VN and other kinds of low-budget games. VNs can be done in a reasonable timeframe by one or two people on top of their day job, while other genres requires years of development, significant funding, and a wider skillset. From following queer devs on twitter and such they absolutely and definitely want more games where you can kill monsters with magic and also be gay, it's just that this takes resources most queer folks don't have, and people who do have the resources don't hire queer folks even when they want to try to tell a queer story

I haven't played it yet but Open Sorcery is supposed to be hella gay, and this one is text-based but mimics a computer interface so it might be your jam?

Also for stuff like Meatpunks, VN segments are just the only viable low-budget replacement for cutscenes. Emails/chats only work for the specific setting of long-distance communication, and while I also think computer interfaces make for really cool experimental storytelling, they only work for specific stories and settings. If you want to show characters going to places, doing stuff and talking, there's no other cheap option, something like Night in the Woods is super nice but it took years, hundreds of thousands of dollars and nearly killed one of the devs from overwork. There's no big idea that queer games have to use a VN format, there's just often no other viable option.

I maintain that "Arlo & Janis" is one of the best newspaper comics around.

Seriously, despite running for 30+ years nobody really talks about it, which is a shame. It's a pretty heartfelt and funny comic strip about a middle-aged couple.

Even the name can be a problem.
There is a short comic series called "Tommy Gun Wizards" that I read and its last comic (and then the collection) had to be renamed because of the name trademark.
