Prince Adam's personality doesn't change when he transforms into He-Man, but Cringer's does, and that's kinda messed up

it is, especially since cringer's transformation is forced and he-man's isn't.

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
There needs to be a word for the emotion one gets drinking the last gulp of tea that has become cold.
An emotion of moderate disgust and unpleasantness combined with experiencing something familiar (here tasting) that has been altered by a small but significant difference (here temperature) with the knowledge that it could have been prevented easily (here drinking faster or not forgetting the time) that turns into a kind of regret.

People make a big deal about the weird punctuation in "Demon's Souls", but I just realized that everyone pronounces "Dark Souls" with emphasis only on the first word, as if it were all one word. That's weird too, right?

It's the fanbase it was designed to have, really. Games like that do the gatekeeping all by themselves.

This is probably not a new observation, but Mati was actually pretty powerful in "Captain Planet" when you think about it. His Heart power basically enabled him to do mind control. He just wasn't malicious about it.

loan words are also a fascinating aspect of language, especially when the loaned word developes a different meaning from its original one

It can be a testament to the culture that wielded the language. Look at the horrid mishmash of words and rules that English has, or how Spanish picked up a lot of Nahuatl words after their conquest of the Aztecs.DaikatunaRevengeance wrote: ↑Wed Mar 17, 2021 11:36 ami find stuff like that infinetly fascinating

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
And every country that inherited the Latin alphabet had different ideas about how to apply it. Some of those ideas required attaching extra bits onto some of the letters, or combining them in weird ways to make radically different sounds. Or in the case of French, both.
And on that note, don't ever let the French invent a written language for a country whose language sounds nothing like theirs. That's how you get the monstrosity that is Vietnamese spelling.

And since this tangent started with Dark Souls, let me bring it back around by saying it's my headcanon that Ornstein's partner in bosshood is pronounced "Smuff", and none of you can stop me.
(Note: I have not actually played the game, so if an NPC actually says his name out loud, feel free to stop me.)

Serbian contains a lot of Turkish words, as well as Persian and Arabic words filtered through Turkish (loan words of loan words, in a way), that were the result of the Ottoman empire ruling over this region for centuries. Likewise it also has a lot of German, from the Austrian empire. And let's not forget Greek and some Latin from the Byzantines.
Over time it has also picked up Hungarian, English and a very small bit of French.

Then there are the more specialized/technical examples, which are harder to nail down and often come from the language of whatever country the thing originally came from.

I don't think they do. Generally we know the bosses names from their healthbars.
There's a handful of characters that are referenced and named in dialogue, but not many of the bosses.

There's a reason why English is pretty much the only language where spelling bees are a thing. It's the only language with convoluted rules enough to where you just need insane memorization skills to be able to spell everything.

I just learned that the "I have the power of God and anime on my side" meme is from 2017 and that's hard to believe. It feels like it's been around longer than that.

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
I've never fully made my peace with people who use "lol" like it's a period and escalate to "lmfao" over the slightest signs of actual amusement, but sweet Frith, people who punctuate their posts with "" are on a whole 'nother level. And they always seem to be the biggest douches too. It's right up there with Pepe and anime-sex-face avatars on the "signs that this person is incapable of having a single right opinion ever" scale.

Also when did our forum start converting emojis to flat, Twitter style ones? Is that a built-in PHPBB feature now?

My impression is that the people who use those emojis are either people who aren't very online (i.e. "normal people") or are so severely irony poisoned that they're mimicking said "normal people" in an attempt to be sarcastic.Pocket wrote: ↑Mon May 17, 2021 6:17 amI've never fully made my peace with people who use "lol" like it's a period and escalate to "lmfao" over the slightest signs of actual amusement, but sweet Frith, people who punctuate their posts with "" are on a whole 'nother level. Yes, and from glancing at the way they're displayed on the page, I'm guessing phpBB is doing it in a way to provide support for older devices that might not have native emoji fonts. Twitter's emoji set is the easiest to use for that purpose.
