I don't get it. VB at least attempts to be funny. NGE is just torture porn for people who want to fuck 14 year olds but think they're deep because there's Christian iconography involved in it.

The only good things I got out of watching it were:

1) A couple scenes of the penguin and problematic beer mom
2) learning the Japanese symbol for anxiety
3) The KOTH anime opening

I usually see Cowboy Bebop tossed around as the go-to introductory anime.

Cowboy Bebop is hella fun and quite western movie style inspired so it's not such a harsh jump for a western audience

by The Doctor having either dumb luck or keen intuition i really liked Kino's Journey as someone who is apathetic toward anime

it helps that every episode is a very self-contained story and they tend to focus on the intrigue of these stories above all else, instead of just trying to squeeze out as much drama and feels as they can muster

recommending Evangelion as a blind watch for someone who doesn't watch anime actually rather sounds like japes moreso than anything

that or terminal anime rot in the brain, a tragically common and 100% fatal illness, rip

or Mushishi, for similar reasons to Kino's Journey and also because Mushishi owns
if they're the kind of person to enjoy that kind of story

Stuff like "Little Witch Academia" is also good for people new to anime. It's relatively light-hearted, and also Western animation inspired (seriously, the creator's a huge fan of American cartoons), so that helps a ton.

which is kind of funny since Mushishi is definitely, extremely japanese, and you'd have a really hard time finding similar western stuff to compare it to, it's just anime in very very different ways than most anime is

they're both deconstructions of their cultures version of the boy wonderkins, presenting themselves as something else before turning into an examination of depression, failure, and ennui

nge just pretends to be an action adventure while vb pretends to be a comedy

you're still better off watching shin godzilla if you want to watch something good by anno though

Funny, that was the one the person subjecting me to NGE recommended as a follow up. After watching an episode of that I think I like that even less. NGE at least had a penguin. I think I just aged out of liking violence cartoons that are too humanistic in character design. I like cartoons that are cute, humorous and/or social commentary.

Yeah, Bebop is an action show first and foremost. It has strong characters, but if you're not liking the violence then it's definitely not going to impress.

yeah fair enough, it is what it wants to be and does that IMO extremely well but it has no pretense about being particularly cute or lighthearted

for that you will deffo like Little Witch Academia which is basically Friendship is Magic but with witches

LWA is basically a love letter to western animation (full of little cameos and references to MLP, Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, Dexter's Lab, Sabrina, old Disney and such) and generally feels a lot like a western cartoon. Definitely cute and humorous, and re: social commentary it's like a Harry Potter cartoon if Rowling's politics didn't suck (so instead of mocking the elves' union the main character joins their union protest and they end up with more fair wages and conditions)

their witch society is also as stuck in their ways, elitist and isolationist as HP's wizarding world, but the show is like... actually aware that no Rowling this is not a good thing, and it's addressed as a big part of the story

LWA has made literally every other take on "magic meets technology" invalid because a witch hovers in on a flying roomba and describes it as an "evolved broom"
