You know how Alice in Wonderland was really popular among stoners back in the day? Has anyone ever tried adapting it as an actual "stoner movie"? I feel like that could be interesting. There are some conversations in the original books that have some serious "Have you ever REEEEEALLY looked at your hands?" energy to them.

He was a genius at making films quick and under budget, which was a really valuable skill in the days of drive-in double features. The second feature didn't have to be any good because by this point the audience is making out and not watching the screen, but you had to have something.
I get the feeling this is why double features died out. Why pay to see two movies when the average attention span is only about as long as one?

Then again, that business model seems to be working out fine for American chain restaurants.

The reason people keep calling him "Art" in some of these skits is because one time, there was a joke where they called him "Art Crow" like, Art Carnie or something, and a 4 year old sent in fan art and apparently didn't realize it was a joke because she labeled the robots and Joel and labeled Crow as just "Art"

It's cute.

I'm reminded that, in Japan, "My Neighbor Totoro" and "Grave of the Fireflies" were released as double feature.

Seriously. :-I

I've been to a couple drive-ins back when our town had one. I remember being 10 years old in 1981 and our family drove out and caught a double feature of The Empire Strikes Back and ... well, I don't remember the second film because I wasn't watching it, I was watching Heavy Metal playing on the screen behind us. :black101:

Then in 1989 -- this was the last gasp for our local drive-in -- I took a date to a double feature of Pet Sematary and Toxic Avenger III: The Last Temptation of Toxie. The relationship did not last.

Well, movies in the '50s -- at least your genre fare -- tended to be shorter, which made a double bill easier to sit through. And in a sense the experience hasn't changed a whole lot: in 1957 you could watch, say, I Was a Teenage Werewolf (76 minutes) followed by The Giant Claw (75 minutes) with a nice little intermission. While nowadays you buy a ticket and you get one movie, but it's maybe The Desolation of Smaug (161 minutes) or Avengers: Endgame (181 minutes). Either way the goal is to provide an acceptable amount of screen time for your movie buck. You know, Desolation of Smaug wasn't very good but there sure was a lot of it.

I've noted that it does seem like movies are longer and longer nowadays, which to be honest I'm not fond of, since it means I have to sit at the theater far longer.

I think the shortest film I ever saw in theaters was the 2011 "Winnie the Pooh" movie. It was barely an hour long (plus a short that proceeded it).

Maybe it helps the second- or third-rate movies out there to be run as the second film in a double feature, as to inflate their distribution numbers. Even if the blockbusters these days are so big that no one (among those who go to drive-ins anymore) sticks around for the rest of the ticket, I suppose it still results in that movie generating a sale.

As I wrote that, I'm left wondering if drive-in theaters will see a resurgence in popularity this summer. The coronavirus has shut down basically all the conventional movie theaters, but drive-in theaters keep people quite a bit more distant from each other.

I've heard that they already are. Probably the ones down south.

I bet this turns out to be a banner year for drive-in restaurants like A&W too, if they're allowed to stay open.

The drive-in restaurants I've been to since the start of everyone actually staying at home have been pretty busy and seemed to be doing well. Of course, if it turns out that the people that hand you the food are getting sick, I guess that'd probably have to be switched to delivery-only to reduce spread and let the workers have more opportunity to clean their hands between giving food to customers.

Whenever there will be a decision for a mandatory face mask I'll 3D scan my face, cut out the nose area down to the chin, scale up the model slightly and create holes (nose, mouth), add holders for filters and for a mounting strap, and then 3D print it.

Why do so many people across the political spectrum think the way to convince someone of their opinion is to shame and bully them?

Not so much a random thought as an extremely recurring one, which makes it also pop up at random intervals, making it a possibly random thought at any given moment. I randomly get meta about my thoughts very frequently, too.

Someone please pull the emergency break on this wah, I'm escalating. :twonk:

Either you are wrong or I am wrong.

Since I know I am most certainly not wrong, logically it must be you who is wrong.

I must convince you of this.
