If you like watching stuff about theme parks and attractions, this one is pretty interesting (and shows just what a weird company Disney is, on top of the terrible things they do)Gloomy Rube wrote: ↑Sun Oct 20, 2019 5:24 pmToday I learned that despite seeing defunctland videos posted here all the time I never actually clicked on one until now

I'm curious, how many people thought that Hanna-Barbera referred to a woman and not two dudes because they didn't notice the hypen (for William HANNA and Joseph BARBERA)?

I assumed as a child it referred to two women, I assumed Barbera was just a unique spelling of Barbara

Michael Eisner sure was a twit, as I've learned from all these videos.
"Disney thought it'd be great to make friends and help people visit their competitors"
"Eisner shut those down and said he hated fun and enjoyment"

Huh, interesting! I saw a Twitter thread about it, and a bunch of people apparently felt the same way.
Also, I posted this in the wrong thread. It meant to go into the "Random thoughts" thread

Re: TIL Thread: Today I learned...
I learned recently that, between Ernie Bushmiller and Jerry Scott, "Nancy" comic strip was drawn by a cartoonist named Mark Lasky.
Lasky's reign on "Nancy" was short-lived, alas. He died only a year later from cancer.
He was 29 years old.

Re: TIL Thread: Today I learned...
TIL about a sitcom that never aired called Mr. Dugan.
This was a result of Maude getting cancelled after Bea Arthur decided to leave the show; the final episodes had Maude moving to Washington DC after becoming a congresswoman. The show was to continue with that format, but Arthur's abrupt departure forced them to rethink it.
Thus, Norman Lear decided to revamp the idea by having a series about a black congressman. 3 episodes were taped for the new show. Unfortunately, when they showed the episodes to black congressmen in office at the time they all hated it, finding it to be racially insensitive. Whoops. As a result they scrapped the project and none of the 3 episodes were ever broadcast.
So it got revamped again. This time it resulted in a show called Hanging In, about a former professional football player becoming a president of a university. This one actually aired, but it was a flop and was cancelled after just 4 episodes.
Given that the script for each project was identical and they all shared most of the same actors, one TV critic noted "the actors must have known their lines pretty well by this point."

TIL that there was at least one female mangaka who lived in the Tokiwa-so apartment, Hideko Mizuno. She assisted Tezuka while living there. She later became one of the first female mangaka to become successful in shojo manga field (at the time most shojo manga were done by men).
At least one of the anime adaptations of her work aired in the US, Honey Honey's Wonderful Adventures. Reading about the premise, it's absolute bonkers (by all accounts, this is a gag manga series, with very little melodrama).
The manga ran in 1966-67, but it didn't become an anime until 1981.

TIL that the white "neutral" wire is only as safe as the idiot who installed it.
As is having the bank of lights you're working on switched off.
And turning off the circuit breaker to the entire floor.
On a related note, I don't ever want to hear people telling me Americans are silly for only using 120V.

TIL that "Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island" was based on a script for an unfinished episode of "Swat Kats". In fact, parts of the original "Swat Kats" script was also used in an episode of "The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest"

Swat Kats isn't really a cartoon I'd expect to be related to either of those other ones.

Nah, this was an after-hours maintenance thing. Upgrading fluorescent fixtures to LED. I meant that I turned off the circuit breaker and it still didn't cut the power that was coming through the line. It's complicated, but the short answer is that this is why you should always put light fixtures and outlets on separate breakers if you can help it, even for the same set of rooms. And also label the breaker switches properly, preferably with a map.Gloomy Rube wrote: ↑Sun Nov 10, 2019 2:27 amPocket what the heck, the entire floor went off? What the heck? That's even more crazy than what I thought happened. So the initial electricians when the building went up didn't plot out their stuff in a sensible way so you'd have any idea which breaker goes to what? That's terrible.

Re: TIL Thread: Today I learned...
You know how, in movies and shows, they always use a fake 555-prefix because no real telephones have that number?
Well, TIL that this is not entirely accurate. At least back in the 1990s (not sure today), it was possible for 1-800 numbers to use the 555 prefix. The staff of "Tiny Toons" learned that the hard way because one episode (the music video one) had a gag where they asked viewers to call 1-800-555-ACME.
They later removed that gag in reruns and DVD releases.
