Parody generally requires a degree of reverence for the source material. Without this, it can come across as mean-spirited and sometimes even just unnecessarily edgy, as instead of creating something in which to share enjoyment of the source material in playful jest, it instead is made into an expression of how much the parody creator does not like the source material

while it is quite possible to make a good parody by making fun of something bad that you don't like, time and again, the best parodies are derived from a genuine love and enjoyment of the source material on some level, and a willingness to poke fun at it without coming across as mean-spirited about it
