I can believe that.

I mean the moral here was that the giant monsters were actually sweeties and thought of him like a dad so it's funny to me how people take this scene outta context and think the guy's got a point

Re: Do you think
I think it was the best of the spy kids movies.
But yeah I totally get why you'd use it as a joke, out of context it's ridiculous, in context it's got more of a message like "no actually creating enormous monsters is good" which is a good message imo

Re: Do you think
The debate for "best Spy Kids movie" heats up when you remember that the Machete franchise of exploitation action films are absolutely 100% Spy Kids spinoffs.

Re: Do you think
Do note that I do not like the Machete movies or that genre in general, but I'm sure tons of people who do like that kind of movie do not like kids adventure stories, so eh, tastes are weird.
It's just such a bizarre case of franchise branching that I cannot stop thinking about it whenever something reminds me of it.

The first Spy Kids came out in 2001 so their original fans are like 30 now.

This also holds true with the Cartesian coordinate system that was named after him.

Re: Do you think
Critiques of Descartes dispute his presupposition that “self” could exist in a vacuum. For example, a dialectic view would argue that existence requires a subject and object, two beings observing and cognizant of each other. Through this lens, we could say that a being only exists to the degree that it is perceivable by others.

What about a being that observes itself? Like humans do, which started the whole preoccupation with the nature of existence in the first place?Mechanical Ape wrote: ↑Mon Jun 01, 2020 11:40 amCritiques of Descartes dispute his presupposition that “self” could exist in a vacuum. Re: Do you think
So, to try to address this in a non-joke manner I journeyed down many Google avenues, only to end up more confused than ever. I would break down the conversations surrounding Cogito ergo sum and the observer/observed dichotomy into two categories:
• Western philosophy: It depends on what you mean by the words “I”, “think”, “therefore”, and “am”.
• Eastern philosophy: [something in Sanskrit]
The actual arguments against Cogito argue that even “I think” presumes too much — thinking may be occurring, they say, but can you prove there is an “I” who is thinking? Perhaps we can only say “thinking is occurring”, in the same sense that we say “it is raining”. What is raining? Nothing in particular, just, y’know, it.
(Obviously this is all airy theoretical stuff, but that’s how philosophers bring home the bacon. Descartes himself didn’t need actual proof he existed, he was doing a thought experiment to push back against philosophical skepticism (and his own depression).)

Re: Do you think
I can't and won't watch Machete, but the Wikipedia synopsis sounds pretty great, so I want that on the record before you all move on. Danny Trejo kills racists with a machete because the Spy Kids series needed their made-up movie to actually be out there. Someday I hope to have an artistic endeavor with such a rich and inarguable right to exist.

Re: Do you think
When it comes to the philosophy of the self, I prefer to default to personal experience for a personal philosophy, rather than trying to warp my brain to think in ways that don't align with that experience.
As a person who spends a lot of time in isolation, I sure as hell think a lot about myself and know that I am the one thinking and that I am the subject of said thoughts, ergo I don't need an outside perspective to confirm my own existence beyond providing context in a singular instance at the start of my continuity of perception as a very young child.

Re: Do you think
I'm working in the general direction of 'perception is the self'
or maybe there's not a "meaningful difference between perception and the self", idk I play this fast and loose because reality is fast and loose but anyway
how you perceive your self, the world and the context in which you exist directly influences how you think and act
you can augment or change up your perceptions by immersing yourself into new experiences, educating yourself about xyz, and adding a bunch of new filters and lenses etc etc, and so alter how you think and act
