fly me to the moon | Elite: Dangerous n other things

Post by !saak (?) » Fri Jun 26, 2020 4:29 am

but mostly Elite: Dangerous probably

imma just be hella lazy and copy-paste this:

Image

Elite: Dangerous is not for everyone

it's a sandbox experience that offers little to no handholding, sometimes obfuscating its most basic functionalities by doing wonderful things like "not providing keybindings to important spaceship things out of the box"

Image

up there is the Full Spectrum Scanner, a tool vital if you wanna do any exploring. I had to find out from a friend this even existed, and after I booted it up I couldn't even back out of it because the Exit button wasn't mapped.

half of the game doesn't even take place within the game itself: you'll be spending hours going through guides/wikis/youtube videos trying to figure out the nuts and bolts of ship module X, engineering Y or material Z

Image

you'll be spending a ton of time with tedious grinding too, sometimes cheesing it like I did to get the big $$$ for a deep space exploration mission

(this cheesing tactic still cost me ~12 hours of actual work)

but

Image

the galaxy is vast, and Elite: Dangerous provides some 400 BILLION star systems to map and explore

it's a cold, hard scifi take on spacetravel that will punish you if you jump out unprepared

you need to keep an eye on your fuel at all times, manage the heat dissipation of your ship

Image

at some point you'll be wanting a lighter ship, which means stripping out the docking assist
meaning you have to control your docking request, speed, pitch, yaw, landing gear and everything by hand

every time

whether it's a station in orbit, a planetary city, some unexplored planet

it'd be weird if it didn't take a lot of work to figure it all out
and that's why there's so many guides, wikis and videos about the experience

Image

the game is home to about 20 thousand players

to support this community and help each other they've made online tools that can help you build a ship, find the best place to offload your Low Temperature Diamonds and even change the colour of your HUD (a functionality not even in the game itself)

they band together to buy massive Fleet Carriers, ships that cost upward of 10 Billion credits and

Image

sent them out into the far reaches of the galaxy, providing places to dock for weary travellers after a 10 thousand+ lightyear trek

Image

they can also give them names

Image

there's a ton of player driven, emergent bits of gameplay that provide an experience that no other game out there really can

even if you somehow completely mess up and run out of fuel, you can file a request with the Fuel Rats,

a player run group that will head out to help anyone in trouble, no matter the time or place

Image

I think I love it

Image

at some point it's a good idea to pick yourself a home base

Image

it's a bit of roleplaying but at the same time it's also a nice feeling to have a "place to come back to" after a long trek

Image

I picked Greg's Legacy, an asteroid base, because what's cooler than that?

Image

inside there's a ton of construction going on, making the place feel super lively

Image

also I got myself a new coat of paint

so I got this game on sale and a longtime friend of mine got it too, and we thought it'd be cool to have a space-roadtrip-in-time-of-corona

it took some 70 hours to get our ships up to the task, boosting the Frameshift Drive's jumprange so we'd get to faraway places sooner

Image

I've gone on a few shorter solo treks myself, but never more than ~1200 lightyears

for our first trip together we decided on the Trifid Nebula, because Day of the Triffids is an inside joke but also cuz you need to go over 5K ly to be able to get in touch with a valuable engineering contact

Image

oh here's my friend btw

Image

so travelling in Elite: Dangerous can be kinda boring, despite you flying through the cosmos thousands of times the speed of light
our trek was a 2ish hour one

we went through some 70ish systems, scanning all of them and probing a few planets that looked interesting

the real prize is finding Earth-like worlds, of which we found exactly 1 (I didn't get a picture of that)

Image

we did however

Image

find these crystalline structures that were floating around on a Lagrange point in a system

Image
A Lagrange Cloud is a form of Notable Stellar Phenomena. Using the Full Spectrum System Scanner, they can be found at the Lagrange points of a star system, along the orbital plane. There are multiple variants with different colors, and some feature electrical storms. Various astronomical objects and biological entities can also be found among Lagrange Clouds and catalogued using the Short Range Composition Scanner
they form when gases clump up at a certain, specific point

Image

we continued flying

Image

and decided to set down on a small moon somewhere in the Lagoon Nebula for the night

This is the first game I plan to buy if I ever build a VR-capable gaming PC. And even then, wouldn't I also need some sort of special flight controller for maximum effect?

I'd want one in VR, cuz you need a controller that's easy to use when you have goggles on

you need a looooot of keys, 2/3rds of your keyboard, and a HOTAS offers those (tho you may have to... uh... do the thing where you need to press two buttons at the same time (there's a better way to say this but you get me))

you can't see your keyboard/mouse easily in VR, a HOTAS offers that tactile feedback you can rely on blindly

I play this in VR and it's pretty fun but I basically can only play for like half an hour before I feel like I'm gonna puke :v:

I'm sure I'll get used to it :v:

Image

first leg of today's trip was getting to the Trifid Nebula

Image

while zooming around I noticed in the Galaxy map that one of the systems was inhabited by a 1000 or so people

so went to check that out and

Image

turns out there was a military outpost!

that was a neat little stopover to do some repairs

Image

nyoom

Image

while we were in the area we thought it'd be neat to check out the Omega Nebula, which is a huge birthplace for dozens of stars

when approaching they're like christmas lights

Image

Image

white stars remain my favourite

Image

Image

mapped another Earth like world

Image

Image

Image

found a neutron star!

Image

to give an idea of scale, here's some of the stars that surround the Omega Nebula

Image

yeah

Image

and so we started the journey back, going by a different, unexplored route

our pace is much slower now, since we're busy scanning systems and mapping planets, stamping our name on the Galaxy

that also means we'll be making hella cash once we get back

Image

landed solo for the night as my friend's taking a slightly different route

good night! :speakest:

The game has been out for years now, hasn't it? Even considering how big the Milky Way is, I had kind of assumed that players had explored it all by now.

There are potentially 400 billion star systems to explore in the Milky Way galaxy, and therefore in the game.

Image

the trip back went a lot slower

Image

going off the beaten path means you run into systems completely unexplored by anyone, with potentially dozens of planets to be mapped
there's three 'levels' of exploring:

"honking", where you drop into a system and fire your Discovery Scanner that sends out a pulse like a sonar (a honk)

I usually do this while fuel scooping around a star

Image

using the Full Spectrum Scanner,

a device you use to look around the system, calibrating to the different wavelengths of stellar bodies and 'zooming' in to unveil them

Image

and lastly mapping or probing a planet

it's a little minigame that's very similar to probing in Mass Effect 2

I usually just map bodies that are high value: terraformable high metal content worlds, water worlds, and Earthlikes, cuz sometimes a planet can be 5-10 minutes away from you and that shit adds up :-I

Image

but it makes for some beautiful sights

water world

Image

Image

---

Image

I needed a break to cook n stuff so I set my ship down on an unassuming rocky world with a few canyons in em

Image

--

Image

Image

pressed on and found another water world

Image

ship selfie

don't think I've mentioned it yet, but this is the Asp Explorer
one of the defacto ships for going out to explore

I've now flown some 15k lightyears with it and it's a good ship
not too big, but still enough internal space for a planetary vehicle, really maneuverable and jumps ~65 LY

I called it 'Habitat of the Heart', inspired by

the ship in this sense is the (livable) habitat in the cold reaches of space, the heart is whoever's flying it

Image

as I got closer to the human bubble I ran out of systems to explore, and the last dozen or jumps I just honked cuz I really just wanted to get home

Image

Image

worth it though as in my destination there were 4 Earthlike worlds, covered in cities

Image

handed in my data at a station owned by Sirius Corp to improve my standings with them so I can get into a special system

brought back a cool 140 mill in data

Image

got my name stamped on the galaxy

bought a new ship, the Mamba

it's the polar opposite of the Asp Explorer,

it has less than half of the jump range and a tiny fuel tank

gonna outfit it with big cannons to hunt down fools and look good while doing it

playing WipeOut

gonna outfit it to be able to do this

and get my combat rank up

I've been engineering the thing, boosting the FSD jumprange and improving the thrusters so I can pitch/roll/yaw faster

but I need more engineering materials and data for the higher tiers, also a bit more money prolly wouldn't hurt (and trading stuff will also easily get that rank up to Elite)
so I'll be going out into my trusty Asp to mine, gather materials and further unlock higher tiers of engineering

also been practicing some Flight Assist Off flying, like in the above video
right now just trying to orient myself properly for docking with stations and the like

with Frag Cannons it makes for a proper 'jousting' kind of fighter, where you basically orbit around your target and rely on your superior speed and boosting to keep out of their range while peppering them with shots.

someone smarter than me pointed out that jousting =/= orbiting

I can't read

also

(timestamped)

I ran into this name so many times while on our 5K discovery trek, turns out it's an artifact of having different platforms 'talking' to the main server: https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous ... alidating/

Please keep in mind that while other ratings do give you an idea of how much time someone has spent doing something, combat does not.

Combat is extremely grindy and killing players both contributes to your rating given the time needed and needs a different skill set than pve. An elite combat player could very well be useless in pvp whereas a lower ranked player in a Viper could very well Ace Combat his way through a 1v4.

Edit:

Regarding the differences between orbiting and jousting Izzy mentioned above, perhaps its best to start with the Mamba.

The Mamba is a medium class combat oriented ship with a high emphasis on speed. This speed comes at the cost of agility and the strength of its lateral and reverse thrusters, relative to other ships of its class. This means that its orbit (when it attempts to turn at speed) is long and elliptical. This makes it poorly suited to orbiting.

Orbiting is when you try to use your side, vertical, and a combination of your reverse and forward thrusters to move erratically around your opponent, whether they are attempting to orbit you as well or not. You attempt to stay in your weapons' optimal ranges while staying outside of range of your enemy's. Best case scenario, you successfully orbit outside of the angle at which your opponent's guns can target you. Keep in mind this can be done with any range, generally, though you usually see this done at close to medium ranges.

Jousting, however, is what the mamba typically does. With its high speed and elliptical orbits, it makes for a predictable and thus more poor ship to orbit opponents in. However, it does very well with jousting. Just like booming and zooming in aircraft, jousting ships use their high speed to close in and execute high angle slashing attacks like diving at an enemy trying to bring their guns on target, then zip by and move away to avoid effective retaliatory fire before rinsing and repeating. This style favors high burst guns that requires less time on target to do its damage, like frag cannons. Frag cannons are space shotguns. They operate best at ranges that would let you lean out of your cockpit to throw a rock at the enemy ship. This, in combination with the Mamba's flight model, means that a frag cannon Mamba would most likely be trying to joust an enemy.

Sorry for the wall of text. tl;dr: orbiting is what you see gundams with guns doing with each other. jousting is what you see gundams with swords doing with each other. Sometimes, one person does one thing and the other person does another.

ran a wing mission with a friend to slay 40 pirates and that was a fun way to test my mamba jousting build

accidentally flying into enemy ships to send them spinning is hilarious,
but also halves my hull integrity (or worse haha)

the whole loop of "screaming past your opponent guns blazing, toggling flight assist off, reorienting yourself to target em, boost towards em" is a ton of fun

took this between sorties

Carrier based field trips for PVP.

Is there a particular reason the player died at the end, or is it just faster to die and pay to respawn somewhere? And even then, considering how many sci-fi tropes this game seems to hit (see also the player furiously micromanaging what looks like the ship's power output), I'd think there'd be a self-destruct function somewhere rather than turning on silent running and waiting for the ship to melt into slag.

Typically organized pvp fights in the community are to the death. It's fun watching your defeated opponent to the death so unless discussed otherwise you usually fight to the last. I haven't heard of someone suiciding like this before in combat with silent running. There is a self destruct option accessible on the right hand panel of the ship.

I suspect that either the pilot wanted to simply concede the fight, or the carrier they are based out of does not have repair facilities installed. If the latter is the case, then dying and respawning on the carrier they are camping out of will be faster than waiting for the fight to end and self destructing after anyways.
