Not as fancy as some others, but I had to do it.

You want unintuitive? I'll give you unintuitive:EquestriaGuy wrote:^^ just don't. I yelled at my computer trying to figure out how GIMP works.
The main change I've made here was to remove my full name and comments. That's a pretty short script, and it still took me a good while to figure out. (Mainly why textboxlower2 and textboxlower3 needed the BlankClip() to work when they're being trimmed anyway, but still).
(Also the bit with Twilight flying in was actually meant to be her just popping in from the bottom as the camera moved, but I screwed up the numbers. It came out better for it anyway).

A few tips:
- Animating in GIMP is not really convenient, since it wasn't made for this (it's hackish). You can alway add GAP though.
- GIMP uses multiple windows because it was designed primarily for Linux, known to have a selection of efficient windows managers (unlike Windows). If you're stuck on Windows, you can ease the pain with at least those two tools: always-on-top, alt-drag. That's a bare minimum - you'll be missing an efficient keyboard mapping and virtual desktops (on Windows, none of the third-party or first-party ones are nearly as usable as on Linux). Single-window mode is there to help you without such tools, but definitely not as efficient.
- Reducing GIF file sizes: Gifsicle does absolute wonders trimming down the fat, and I mark my words.
- Reducing PNG file sizes: OptiPNG is where it's at. The GIMP is usually efficient enough in most cases, so if you're using it, you don't really have to worry about this.
- If you can, use APNG instead of GIF.

Unfortunately, support for animated PNG, which is still non-standard, is abysmal in everything except Firefox.

For animation work, I also highly recommend Add alpha to all layers, Rename layers, Select top/previous/next/bottom layer only and especially AnimStack, which requires a bit of learning but will highly simplify many basic tasks.Renard wrote:A few tips:

I use Linux (Ubuntu under xfce), and I find multiple-window mode to be clumsy and annoying. The underlying problem is that the Gimp development team outright refused to listen to their users for ages on this matter even after their code started to be ported to Windows, and even if some users simply prefer single-window mode for whatever reason. The fact it took them till 2.8 to actually incorporate some sort of implementation for such a widely demanded feature is frankly a bit concerning.Renard wrote:- GIMP uses multiple windows because it was designed primarily for Linux, known to have a selection of efficient windows managers (unlike Windows). Gifsicle is completely free and can compete with the best. As for OptiPNG, I find that PNGOUT sometimes compresses better, noticeably so; I routinely use a slightly less thorough version of imgopt, which layers OptiPNG, PNGOUT and AdvPNG.
Yeah, this is not really viable if you want most people to actually see your animation. Wish that it were. (Oh, and also the filesize really shoots up, so it's only convenient for stuff like icons and emotes.)Renard wrote:- If you can, use APNG instead of GIF.

Just as a heads-up: after the episode airs and is awesome, I want to do the unironic version of this thread, where Princess Twilight solves everyone's problems and we get to blame Larson for that, too.

It's probably going to be our biggest episode thread of the first 65, when all is said & done.

Am I too late? Probably. Man, why did I waste an hour of my life on this. Photoshop CS3 on a Mac is awful for gifs.

Also, apparently the link is broken for the Star Trek one I made. And It's my favorite of the ones I've made so...
Didn't even see this on his twitter, that's awesome.Did Larson continue to appreciate the joke? He did! On Twitter he praised the thread, calling it “absolutely hilarious” and singling out this Memento joke by The Doctor for special attention:

Re: PHOTOSHOP THREAD: Thanks, M.A. Larson!
So somebody on Reddit took some of these GIFs and posted them for karma but in looking at the imgur album I noticed a couple GIFs that never appeared in this thread. Given that Wylie first suggested the "Thanks M.A. Larson" meme over in the pony lecture thread, it's interesting to see how it spread outside the boards. Anyone know who made the Indy rolling ball or supermarket GIFs?
EDIT: As The Doctor mentioned, we have an article on the front page talking about the meme.

I am amazed that this blindingly obvious connection has never actually occurred to me before. The front page wrote:There’s a game in the series called Twilight Princess. I mean seriously
Now to make a gif of it...

Re: PHOTOSHOP THREAD: Thanks, M.A. Larson!
You could have Link's first transformation... Into a Twilight Princess. But that's obvious. What other scenes- Oh! The one with the falling ... Oh- What's-her-name! There's probably tons of sequences to abuse.Durandal wrote:

Don't kill me over the font, Kefka! I copy-pasted those letters from the instruction text at the bottom of the original, though I had to be a little creative with the k, M, and A.

Oh man this is only about 2 weeks after the fact, but Venusy, what font did you use for the dialog boxes in Majora's Mask? I've been looking for that font.

Why did you do this? You can download Celestia Medium Redux for free on the Internet.Chaos Sonic wrote:Don't kill me over the font, Kefka! I copy-pasted those letters from the instruction text at the bottom of the original, though I had to be a little creative with the k, M, and A.

I thought it would be the lazier option at first. Then I found it didn't have all the letters I needed, but I was determined to finish what I had started anyway.numsOic wrote: Why did you do this? You can download Celestia Medium Redux for free on the Internet.

For this one and the Pokémon ones in the other thread, it seemed easier to make the game give me the text than it would have been to create them manually.
EDIT: A quick search for "majora's mask dialogue font" gives the font name as Chiaro.

Jesus Harold Christ on a unicycle. You edited the rom, then recorded it, then pasted Twilight in, -then- turned it into a .gif?Venusy wrote: I, uh, couldn't tell you, that wasn't an image edit.
