Bam! Wham! Pow!: The Comics Thread Issue #2

Post by Juju&Lulu (?) » Tue Oct 31, 2017 9:44 am

I'm not sure when the rest of the regulars will get back here but here's the thread for comics.

I've been meaning to update with what comics I've been reading.

Monthly Issues I'm currently reading
-Saga: Romeo and Juliet meets Star Wars meets madness

-Dark Knights Metal: DC's hit event series that so far has been loads of fun. Basically, an evil Justice League made up of evil fusions of each main Leaguer and Batman have invaded the Multiverse from the Dark Multiverse (basically a graveyard for DC elseworlds). Honestly, as fun as it's been I'm more excited for the aftermath, which is bringing back a lot of old faves into the DCU and a line of new books once the even is over

-Rick and Morty: gotta have something to tide me over these next three years waiting for season 4

-Mister Miracle: This has just been a supremely good comic. It tackles some heavy topics (like depression) but has just been another solid hit for Rebirth.

-Doom Patrol: I love Gerard Way, and I loved Umbrella Academy. This is my best fix. It's weird

I alsomanaged to get the second volume of Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol for cheap at a used bookstore. This book is just bonkers. But I love it.

Also not necessarily a comic book, but I've been reading The Secret History of Wonder Woman. It's been a good read, and of all the Trinity, Wonder Woman definitely has the most... interesting creation story.

So yeah discuss comics here I guess

Boom Studios
- Steven Universe OGN 2 Anti-Gravity: UUUuugh... Ronaldo... Why do the writers keep adding him? Not awful but great it isn't either.
Rating: 5/10

IDW
- Jem & The Misfits Infinite #3 (Part 6): Decent ending. Although I liked this plot I yearn for something "normal".
Rating: 6/10

- MLP Friendship is Magic #60: The art is very uneven here but mostly passable. The same goes for the story.
Rating: 5/10

Image
- Curse Words #9: Still rad as heck and it poses some interesting perspectives on belief.
Rating: 8/10

- Paper Girls #17: Major plot dump. Not so big but it gives so much context to everything that happens.
Rating: 7/10

- Saga #48: Oh god! Fidget spinners fade out the current Zeitgeist and get mentioned here. What a world!
Rating: 8/10

Marvel Star Wars
- Star Wars #38: On the one hand I really appreciate the interconnectiveness of this comic with Rogue One but I fear sounding like a broken record mentioning the horribly out-of-place traced faces. Otherwise it's fine.
Rating: 6/10

- Captain Phasma #3 + #4: Over all pretty decent comic. The first issue was obviously the superior one. I think that this mini-series would have been better if this was a bigger one-shot.
Rating: 6/10

- Darth Vader #7: I like the direction this arc gets. They want to hunt a librarian jedi.
Rating: 7/10

- Doctor Aphra #13: Vader defeating Rur, Aphra on er heels running away from Vader, BT-1 and Triple-Zero capturing a new "master", and a lot of tieing of loose plot points together. It almost felt like a series finale.
Rating: 8/10

- Poe Dameron #20: They found Lor San Tekka (the man with the missing map piece from the beginning of The Force Awakens). Also a pilot has troubles finding an astromech droid because the pilot has the luck of coming home with a broken one. Also here: faces of varying degrees of uncanny valley syndrome.
Rating: 6/10

- Mace Windu #3: Only the killer assassin robot gives me some glimpses of hope for this series, that is overwhelmingly mediocre.
Rating: 4/10

Marvel
- Ms Marvel #23 + #24: I'm so glad that the hinted romance with Red Dagger didn't turn that into a literal train wreck. The art is breathtakingly good.
Rating: 8/10

- Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #26: The magazine style and the collaboration with all the different artists and writers is a mixed bag of nuts, a lot of bitter nuts. Only a few stories are worthwhile like Brain-Drain's nihilistic opinions and Galactus "Garfield" (by Jim Davis).
Rating: 4/10

Oni Press
- Heartthrob Season 2 #4: Callie is getting more radical and renegade the series continues. I think that Mercer controls her from the background of her mind. Just a theory.
Rating: 7/10

Yesterday I added some of the new books DC has coming out soon to my pull list.

Mystic U- Basically Harry Potter: The College Years. It'll star Zatanna and other magic characters

Immortal Men- Coming out of the fallout of Metal, basically all the immortal characters of DC have a secret society. Also The Batman Who Laughs will be in this and he's pretty cool

Not added toy pull list but still interested in

Silencer- Basically the story of a mom who's an assassin, and juggles with both of those things. Talia Al Ghul will be involved somehow. The premise sounds potentially interesting.

The Terrifics- Lol Marvel won't make a Fantastic 4 Book so DC will do it for them. The lineup of heroes looks cool (Mr. Terrific, Plastic Man, Metamorpho). This isn't out until February though so I've got some time before adding this though.

And while it's not a part of the New Age of Heroes I'm also looking forward to Snagglepuss simply because of Marc Russel.

Boom
- Power Rangers #20: So, Zordon gathered the Rangers in the 60s or 70s for a one-off mission... and it went terrible, with several of the rangers dead by the end of the fight, even if the mission was accomplished.
Rating: Good

DC
- Any Metal Related comic: They've all been fun, one way or another, even if they're pretty dark at the same time. Still nowhere near as bad as compared to Marvel events when it comes to tie-ins and such.
Rating: Good

- Batman Lost: Yeah, made a separate entry for this one -- it's a love letter to Grant Morrison and Final Crisis, so whether you like it or don't depends on where you land on Final Crisis.
Rating: YMMV

- Action Comics Up-To #991: Well... The Oz Effect was disappointing overall.
Rating: Meh

- Batman Up-To #34: I know people will say that Bats is acting out of character with all those quips, but hey... he's in love; that makes you a bit crazy, right?
Rating: Really Good

- Batman White Knight #2: This has been a really interesting elseworld story.
Rating: Really Good

- Detective Comics Up-To #968: Man, I loved this arc. Future Tim is a badass, and a tragic figure at the same time.
Rating: Really Good

- Deathstroke #25: Eobard Thawne bringing up a twisted version of Kantianism is... well... kinda weird, but weirdly fitting?
Rating: Good

- Green Arrow #34: Merlyn being a dick.
Rating: Good

- Mister Miracle #4: This shit fucked me up. Too real.
Rating: Great

- Nightwing Up-To #32: Dick just unravels Raptor...
Rating: Good

- Red Hood & The Outlaws Up-To #16: The outlaws team up with suicide squad after the bat-family (sans batman) decide The Outlaws are... well... stepping into their territory.
Rating: Good

- Superman Up-To #34: Supes and family are trapped in Apokolips... thanks Lex.
Rating: Good

- Teen Titans #13: Damian is trying to recruit Emiko and the rest are trying to get Wally back.
Rating: Good

- Titans #17: They're actually using Donna's muddled origin to its advantage.
Rating: Good

- The Flash Up-To #34: Meena is evil? you don't say.
Rating: Good

- Wonder Woman Up-To #34: We find more on Wondie's brother and Grail and tween Darkseid...
Rating: Good

IDW
- Transformers Lost Light #10: It took 10 issues but it finally feels like it has recaptured the old MTMTE magic.
Rating: Great

- TMNT - Ghostbusters 2 #1 and #2: It's fun and it's with the Ghostbusters I like.
Rating: Good

Marvel
- Amazing Spider-Man #790: Pete's broke. He's upsetting a bunch of people. Yadda yadda.
Rating: Good

- Captain America #695: Low on substance but perhaps the only way it could be a palate cleanser following the crap that was Secret Empire.
Rating: Good.

- Daredevil #595: Mayor Fisk. Yeah, that sounds good. I like this new status quo.
Rating: Good

- Falcon #1 and #2: This is bad; not Gabby Rivera's America bad, but at least America's so bad it's actually entertaining.
Rating: Bad

- Moon Knight #188: This was so good! Already way ahead of Lemire's 14 issues of nothingness.
Rating: Really Good

- Peter Parker The Spectacular Spider-Man #6: I had been iffy on Zdarsky's writing for a while, but wow, this issue is amazing.
Rating: Great

- Punisher The Platoon #2: The ongoing just ended with Punisher #16 and it was meh... but this comic is really really good -- it's worthy of the Punisher title.
Rating: Really Good.

- Runaways #2-#3: I know Runaways is a darling, even here, but gawd, Gert is very annoying in this comic.
Rating: Decent

- Spider-Man #234: A Sinister Six just for Miles, not bad.
Rating: Good

- Spirits of Vengeance #2: Weirdly fun.
Rating: Good

Oni Press
- Kaijumax Season 3 #3: The Hamilton issue. Also, Hellmoth is back and has taken control of the aryan brotherhood, I mean, the crypts.
Rating: Really Good

Boom Studios
- Adventure Time #70: Finn and Jake make a mess, and need to clean up Ooo. They wish for clones of them and get them. What could possibly go wrong? Proably a lot.
Rating: 7/10

- Amazing World of Gumball Afterschool Special: it's a compilation of the 2015 and 2016 specials. A few parts seemed to be new but my memory can fool me on that regard.
Rating: 6/10

- Steven Universe #6: Finally got that months-old comic. Pearl got frustrated about her recent misfortunes and was persuaded to partake in a wrestling match to let out that frustration. Her wrestling persona is "Peach Panther". Decent but my lack of enthusiasm for wrestling is not helping.
Rating: 5/10

IDW
- DuckTales #2: The first proper appearance of Della Duck in the new DuckTales canon.
Rating: 8/10

- Star Wars Adventures #1-#3: I didn't write a review for the first two issues before because at that time the forum was down. In short this series is a goofier and slapstick-ier version of Star Wars tailored for children. The stories are simpler and lean toward a joke at the end. In #3 Finn was harassed by a little "gremlin" on his janitor duties. The whole series reminds me of the Droids Omnibus I read a while ago.
Rating: 6/10

Oni Press
- The Damned #5: Oh poor Deidra again.
Rating: 7/10

- Rick & Morty #31: Nothing brings a family together like blowing up a bunch of alien perverts.
Rating: 7/10

I haven't thought about the density of symbolism across a page of a comic.

If you guys are unclear how to read these on a pc, let me know and I can guide you

Got Doomsday Clock #1, it was a good start I think. Eager to see where this all goes.

I saw Rorshach being a new character, and that he's working with Ozymandius.

Looks like their plan will probably end up with Superman convincing Manhattan to go back and save his world.

Fucking with the DC universe is basically a vacation/mid-lofe crisis for Manhattan

Comics I got this week

Super Sons #10- Damien and Jon get a new HQ. This issue was a good reentry point for me since I missed the last couple issues. Jon and Damien play off each other very well, and it was cool seeing them interact with their dads

Super Sons Annual- The Justice League of pets! It was cooling seeing Bat Cow and Ace again. This was a silly and light-hearted issue, but fun.

Mystik U #1- This really is just Harry Potter but in the DCU. It's cool having Zatanna back and the art is really nice. Interested to see where it goes.

I like the design of Zatanna. At our D&D table we have a NPC character that looks like Zatanna and one of our players told a bunch about her.
Maybe I grab it digitally and throw a look at it.

I've fallen so far behind in what i'm supposed to review, so here are some thoughts

DC
Batman is really good, whether its the main Batman title or Detective comics, or even the weird elseworld stories like White Knight or Creature of the Night. Batman TMNT II is still awesome!

Superman and Action Comics have taken a step back, but quite solid still.

Green Arrow is still good, but gotten a bit weird for my taste -- even so, still one of my favorite DC titles (i like socialist batman)

Hal Jordan and the Green Lanterns books are still solid, no change here

Super Sons' annual was solid, even tho I'm not a big fan of the Super Pets

The DC Holiday Special and the DC New Talent Showcase for this year were also good reads, tho I have a huge issue with the Poison Ivy story, where she FUCKING RESCUES GODDAMN PEST FROM HELL KUDZU!!! It's like the writer has no fucking clue of the damage Kudzu does to the environment, specially in the southern states -- yes, it actually personally offended me.

Justice League, now being written by Christopher Priest was so good. Deathstroke, also by him, is also really good still.

I had never read Aquaman till Rebirth and to this day, its still one of the reliable comics out there. Marvel wishes it was this stable.

Doomsday Clock: too early and weird to say whether its good or bad

Flash has too many speedsters

Wonder Woman on the uptick after the super bland arc by Fontana.

Indies
Kaijumax, now in its third season, remains probably the best comic out there that no one is reading.

Transformers Lost Light has gotten its groove back. Taking the spotlight away from Anode and Lug has caused the book to go back to peak-MTMTE-ness

Giant Days remains a solid slice of life british com.

Usagi Yojimbo, now 164 issues old, has never published a single bad comic.

The Klaus special was good holiday stuff

Star Trek TNG Mirror Broken was a good mini-series -- really enjoyed this take on TNG

Fence is basically Check Please or Yuri on Ice, but with swords.

Ninja-K is a solid jumping on point for the Valiantverse -- for those tired of DC and Marvel.

Mech Cadet Yu is really good, specially if you like mecha anime like Gundam, Evangelion and Bokurano, but devoid of nihilism and solipsism. In fact, it's more like Pacific Rim.

Marvel
Captain America is kinda bland, but it's so gorgeous... but really, Captain America being bland as oatmeal is what we should get after the bowl of glass we ate under Nick Spencer.

The Spider-Books are kinda weird... so tired of the Venom Blast being the jack of all trades tool for Miles. Spider-Gwen is atrocious, it's literally a boiled frog, I couldn't tell when it went really bad but all of the sudden you realize its a giant pile of shit and then on hindsight you realize it had been incremental but still cant pinpoint the moment it went bad. I still dont like the Spectacular Spidey, tho the heartfelt comic between JJJ and Pete was awesome. ASM is... well... Slott with bad dialogue at times.

If I could, I would sweep Lemire's Moon Knight under the rug. Bemis' Moon Knight is so so good in comparison.

Avengers/Champions is underwhelming. US Avengers dealing with Skrulls reenacting Riverdale was fun though.

Hawkeye just drove me crazy -- Generations was explicitly told to be a sort of sub-dimension/time travel -- then Kelly Thompson contradicts that with the new issues --- which granted, I just got because Clint is in it, but little things like that drive me crazy.

Hulk is atrocious.

X-men books are bad in general

Inhuman books are still trash

The New Punisher book is... too early to judge? Punisher The Platoon is amazing though.

Daredevil feels so classic, which is good.

Defenders confirms that Bendis visits 4chan.

Thor remains one of the few solid Marvel books.

Spirits of Vengeance is a very fun mini

Doctor Strange is... good but questionable.

Comics I read this week.

Batman White Knight- Finally decided to try this out and it was a good first issue. Having the Joker be the stand-in for victims of police violence is a little meh, but the art is good and premise interesting. Will probably my keep reading it.

Batman #36- The SuperBat in this one was strong. Lois and Selina just accept their nerds. Looking forward to the double date next issue.

DC Holiday Special- Another year, another collection of holiday cheer. I'm a sucker for this stuff, and most of stories were enjoyable enough. Though honestly the thing that got me the most excited was seeing the Atomic Knights back after learning about them from Linkara Reviews. Hoping they come back full-time.

I'm still waiting for my comics delivery. Due to the frantic holiday online shopping spree the world does at the moment my precious comics take longer to arrive. Usually they should have been in my hands on Friday but they'll come probably on Monday.
I would have liked to binge-read on the weekend but I have to spread out my reading pile over the week because I cannot read that much after work. Mental exhaustion and darkness are no good for reading.

This is interesting. Remember how Archie lost the license to do Sonic comics? It made it seem that Archie was done with doing comics based off of outside properties.

Then this news came out. Archie is set to do "Dick Tracy" comic books.

Would be interesting to see how this goes.

IDW
- Jem and The Holograms Dimensions #1: Don't care for the ski story here but I am all for the Dungeons and Dragons part. Jerrica gets all stressed out handling newbies as a newbie dungeon master until Synergy takes the reigns as the DM at the end. Synergy suggests playing the Tomb of Horros adventure. In 5e it's not that harsh as in past editions but still very mean.
Rating: 6/10

- MLP Friendship is Magic #61: What a delight. Andy Price is too good for this. His art makes a potentially boring story into a treasure trove of background details and makes the character interactions very lively. Look at Star Wars Episode 1 with its diplomacy! This comic makes it better.
Rating: 8/10

- MLP Legends of Magic #8: It's like reading two stories in one and both are good ones. Meadowbrook makes it better.
Rating: 8/10

Image
- Black Magick #9: Decent but slowly developing.
Rating: 6/10

- Curse Words #10: That ending man.
Rating: 8/10

- The Fix #10: I cannot believe how many times it was delayed. It's still good but I think that the long waiting time did a toll instead of a boon.
Rating: 6/10

- Rat Queens #6: What a drug trip into the 30ies.
Rating: 8/10

- Snotgirl #8: Too many naked manly bodies...
Rating: 5/10

Marvel - Star Wars
- Star Wars #39: The Empire has mined Jedha again for the second Death Star.
Rating: 6/10

- Darth Vader #8 + #9: Badass archivist.
Rating: 7/10

- Doctor Aphara #14: The tables have been turned in so many ways.
Rating: 7/10

- Poe Dameron #21: It starts to feel like Oceans 11.
Rating: 6/10

Oni Press
- Heartthrob Season 2 #5: The ending was veeeery strange.
Rating: 6/10

I just got the first issue of "Rocko's Modern Life" comic book from Boom! The story is that Rocko gets fired from a help desk job and struggles to find a new job because it's 2017 (Conglom-O even went bankrupt since the original show ended 20 years ago), so he decides to get a roommate to help with the money situation. Of course, the roommate turns out to be a slob who causes more damage to the house than Rocko can cover.

All in all, I think the story is better written than the old "Rocko" comic books that Marvel put out when the show was still running, and it is something I'd expect in the show. A bit depressing, though, given the real world situation for younger people.

There's also a short bonus story by KC Green featuring Mr. Bighead and Dr. Hutchinson. Highly recommended, especially if you loved the cartoon.

When it aired I was not a huge fan of Rocko's Modern Life. I watched it but only on the merit it was running on the TV and nothing else to watch in the morning. The same goes for Rugrats but that I have avoided watching. There was always something off with the art style and presentation that I still am not very fond of.

Comics I've read the last 2 weeks.

Batman White Knight: art and setting continue to be good. The social commentary continues to straddle the line between good and meh. Not sure how to feel about the 2 Harleys twist but there's arguments to be made on both sides. Also not sure about the Mr. Freeze subplot, though it's funny how it's lifted straight out of Batman and Robin

Batman #37: I loved this one a lot. SuperBat double date shenanigans ensue and it was all pretty cute. Honestly, my favorite interactions were between Selina and Lois

The Batman Who Laughs: Finally got this one and it was a ride from start to finish.

Metal #4: Still fun and a good read, though I'm a little worried how this will all wrap up in just 2 issues. Also wondering if The Dreaming still has a role to play other than breaking Bruce and Clark out of Dark Multiverse jail and then giving them backstory and their quest. Was also nice to see the Monitor and Antimonitor

Mister Miracle #5: Continues to fuck me up. Its great.

Doomsday Clock #2: Still a slow burn on this one.

I just re-read Scott Pilgrim. I wish the whole thing had been like the first 3 volumes, I would have loved the whole thing. I still like the world in it though. And the movie does the nega-Scott thing way better than the comics.

Something I'm wondering. To those who read webcomics, what was the first one you read on a regular basis? I'm old enough to remember "Melonpool" being my first. The comic debuted back in 1996, and I was reading it circa 2003 or so.

What was your first exposure to webcomics?

The first webcomic I read regularly was http://www.nichtlustig.de/ (English version http://notfunny.com/ but it isn't updated anymore). Soon after http://dilbert.com/ and http://xkcd.com/ were added to my browser favorites.

Melonpool! Wow, I haven't thought of that in a long time. I started reading that sometime around 2001, but I also got into Megatokyo around the same time. I'm not sure which one of those two was my first, but I'd put money on Melonpool. Within a month or two I had a folder of 15-20 that I opened daily to check for updates, so it's hard to tell what ones came first.

Recovering from surgery has given me plenty of time to read comics, not so much time writing about them.

DC
- The Evil Tim Drake story across several titles has been pretty darn fun.
- Batman has been great, particularly the 2 part story with Supes and Lois
- Conflicting emotions towards Doomsday Clock
- Priest managed to make Slade/Terra slightly less creepy, but still creepy
- Nightwing, under Humphries, is just as good as it was under Seeley -- also, poor Guppy
- Black Lightning is too real!
- Batman White Knight and Batman Creature of the Night are excellent Elseworld stories
- Batman & The Signal is too weird
- Snagglepuss was a great read, story wise, even art wise it was ok -- until you see all the male furries are standing in tippy toes and pantless. It's such a weird design choice and almost makes me wish they had chosen an actual furry artist for this.
- Hal Jordan and the GL Corps continues to be the best GL book
- Seeing Clayface broken is, honestly? hearbreaking
- Priest's Justice League is so good compared to Hitch's
- Aquaman stays solid.
- Mr. Miracle continues to be great.

Marvel
- Only reading the Hawkeye comic cuz of my boy Clint is in it. It's also the reason why I'm reading Tales of Suspense.
- Phoenix Ressurection is another comic that gives me conflicting feelings.
- Black Bolt is... clearly one of the best Marvel comics.
- Moon Knight is... good? I mean, it's clearly a good comic... it's just that Max Bemis is a giant prick.
- Punisher The Platoon continues to be excellent
- Doctor Strange hit me in the feels... and yes, it was a worthy offering.
- Marvel 2-in-1 was oddly really good.
- Defenders is also good, but its winding down... got the feeling the ending will be rushed.
- Venom Inc crossover is crap.
- Really liking Daredevil after a weird lull in Soule's run.
- Mangog is here to wreck shit up in Valhalla
- Cap is so good, but some people are so angry about Sharon Carter being pushed to the side... and I can understand that.

Others
- Kaijumax continues to be the best comic no one is reading
- Transformers Lost Light gut punched me as soon as I came out of surgery
- Optimus Prime has Prowl and Pyra Magna conspiring... dang!
- Till All Are One end in a great note with its annual. I'll miss this comic.
- Transformers vs Visionaries is... not really good (shock value death by editorial mandate ugh)
- Go Go Power Rangers and MMPR continue to be two solid PR comics -- who knew this was even possible?
- Ninja*K and Quantum and Woody are really really great comics but words fail me to describe why they're so good.
- The Hellboy X-mas special was solid, but so is every Hellboy story

Batman White Knight #3- Kinda surprised the second Harley is playing a continued role in this. Also not sure how much of an asshole they can make Batman in this.

Snagglepuss- Wasn't expecting this to all happen against a backdrop of McCarthyism. Still, comic's good.

I kind of expected it cuz that was the premise of the sneak peek: Snagglepuss in front of Congress (House Committee on UnAmerican Activities)

It's just the art that boggles me.

Found out that the newspaper strip "Piranha Club" (originally titled "Ernie") is ending in February, after a 30 year run. The creator announced it on his website.

I haven't read the strip much in recent years, but I used to be an avid reader as a kid, being one of the handful of American strips that our newspaper in Japan ran. I always loved its quirky, bizarre humor, also the fact that just about every character in the strip is a con-man of some sort (hence the name "Piranha Club").

Despite the long run, the strip didn't have much of a huge following in the US; a large majority of the fanbase was in the Scandinavian region of all places; it's suggested that they were the ones keeping the strip alive for so long, although I can't confirm it.

Alterna Comics
- Doppelgänger #1: The only reason I grabbed it was the price ($1.50) and it features a programmer. One day after a car accident the protagonist encounters a doppelgänger and whenever those two are seen together every observer disintegrates into dust. Also the doppelgänger is evil in some regard. Too bad it's printed on newspaper-quality paper
Rating: 5/10

Black Mask
- 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank: I waited for the series to be released collected into one book before reading it. I guess it was the best choice. The story progresses very slowly and the months waiting between the issues would have make it worse. The characters were great. Towards the end there are some questionable actions and leaps of logic, however it still was fun. The only major complaint I have is the absolute end.
Rating: 8/10

Boom Studios
- Adventure Time Spoooktacular 2017: Very average. It's not inherently bad but I expected a more cohesive theme here or a larger story for that price.
Rating: 5/10

- Adventure Time Comics #17: More entertaining than the Spoooktacular.
Rating: 6/10

- Adventure Time x Regular Show #4 + #5: The Mordecai and Rigby parts were dull. In comparison the Ice King and Marcie bits about them interacting with the "normal" world and seeing parallels to their own past time were great.
Rating: 5/10

- Steven Universe #9: Anything with Lapis and Peridot is a small treat. Vidalia gives some art lessons to Steven and the others and Peridot does Peridot things and Meep Morps.
Rating: 7/10

Dynamite
- Swordquest #5: Finale. The ending was anticlimactic and the last page was sequel-baiting. I thought of more.
Rating: 5/10

IDW
- DuckTales #3: Donald's constant misfortune gives me life.
Rating: 7/10

- DuckTales #4: Oh boy... An island on which a crazy person forces every visitor to be happy is truly scary.
Rating: 7/10

- Star Trek Discovery #1: Based on the newest TV-show. It follows the beginning of T'Kuvma, the leader of the Klingon ship in the first episodes. It's not bad but not that interesting story to read.
Rating: 5/10

Oni Press
- The Damned #7: Eddie is such a momma's boy.
Rating: 6/10

I just wanted to point out that Alterna always prints on newspaper-quality paper on purpose -- they actually make it a point to advertise it as a throwback feel to the comics of old

That's fine but the print quality was so shitty that every page has a lot of ink from the adverse page and from the backing page.
I have some vintage Marvel comics that were printed on newspaper and have less of that problem.
They could save a bit of ink in the printing process and make the image quality better.

The second batch

Boom Studios
- Adventure Time #71: Imagine the MLP Mirror Pool episode with actually helping people, that are actually too good for the world and inevitably doom the world. This is what it'll develop towards to.
Rating: 8/10

- Adventure Time Comics #18: Good selection of stories here. I liked the one where a harp reveals the true dreams and wishes of a person. Cosmic Owl's was magnificent.
Rating: 6/10

- Regular Show Parks And Wreck: It's a compilation of all the Regular Show specials of the past years.
Rating: 6/10

- Steven Universe #10: Steven and Connie have a school assignment that says that they have to do a report on animal behavior and Amethyst sabotages it by interfering with it, meaning that the animals should behave naturally and without human contact. So at the end interfering with a bunch of squirrels and interacting with them is the solution? Nice but the logic is way off here.
Rating: 5/10

IDW
- Star Wars Adventures #4: What a snore-fest.
Rating: 5/10

- Star Wars Adventures #5: In comparison this is delightful. Leia is in imperial uniform busting out Luke out of prison. Also it has a mischivious porg adventure.
Rating: 7/10

Oni Press
- The Damned #7: Weekend at Bernie's, just more violent.
Rating: 6/10

- Rick & Morty #32: Summer falls in love in a space car. It's a literal car crash to witness
Rating: 8/10

- Rick & Morty #33: Summer takes the portal gun and jumps into a universe in which the Summer there is popular and a lesbian.
Rating: 7/10

- Rick & Morty Pocket Like You Stole It #5: This ended more satisfying than previously anticipated and it ends on a horrible twist like a real Rick & Morty episode.
Rating: 7/10

Ugh, that sucks.

DC has some newer collections that use a more porous, non-glossy paper -- and I love them. Shame Alterna whiffed on that.
