My point is more so that sitcoms where an audience laughs after one-liners still exist. I call them "laugh-track" shows because that's what they're usually identified as/known for, but I know many of them use live audiences.

Still, I appreciate the correction.

I feel like not adding laughter noise/a live audience into a show allows for the jokes to be a lot better paced and well-written, with joke structures not having to fit into one specific category. Adding a "laugh track"/having a live audience to laugh at your show strikes me as a sign of insecurity in your own show's material.

I'm not saying these sitcoms are bad, but I do think that shows without the live laughter/laugh track have an advantage when it comes to format and variety.

How did that even get started, anyway? I assume it was out of a desire to replicate the feel of watching a stage show in an auditorium, but radio programs didn't do it, did they? Since they were broadcast from a little room, and the technology to play back a wide selection of prerecorded reactions was still a ways away.

The Long, Strange History of the Laugh Track

Recording pioneer Jack Mullin describes how the laugh trace specifically started with Bing Crosby's radio show: "The hillbilly comic Bob Burns was on the show one time, and threw a few of his then-extremely racy and off-color folksy farm stories into the show. We recorded it live, and they all got enormous laughs, which just went on and on, but we couldn't use the jokes. Today those stories would seem tame by comparison, but things were different in radio then, so scriptwriter Bill Morrow asked us to save the laughs. A couple of weeks later he had a show that wasn't very funny, and he insisted that we put in the salvaged laughs. Thus the laugh-track was born," he told Channels of Communication, a trade journal, in 1981.

I like the effects they used in 300. I just think that since then people decided to copy that, not realising that the mood which works for a super hyped and ultraviolent retelling of Greek legend doesn't work for your average action hero movie. Also it works well when you have golden light to contrast with the dark shadows, unlike the Dark Knight where it was just all dark and grey.
