I'd recommend trying subnautica, i was skeptical about it when i first played it as i thought it was one of those shit survival games, but then it turned to be an actual good exploration game
I’m replaying Subnautica and one thing that’s really striking me is how well paced it is: there’s always a thing to do and what that thing is, changes as you go on. The progress steps are placed just right.

At first it’s a survival game, but you quickly learn how to make food and water and you get oxygen tank upgrades to spend more time productively gathering. Then you make your base building tool and create a place for your stuff. THEN you build a Seamoth and it becomes an exploration game. Then it also becomes a base-building game too. And all this time you’re pushing forward your depth upgrades and discovering new wonders/horrors you’d unwittingly swam over hundreds of times. And you’re always being pushed to go just outside your comfort zone to get the next cool thing. It’s an expertly tuned experience.

If there's one issue i have with it, it's sometimes hard to find stuff you need.

Sony bought Bungie for 3.6 billion.

Bungie is keeping all the rights to Destiny as well as future games, including all the publishing rights.

There won't be any Playstation exclusives.

Man, I don't think I'll ever have an experience quite like Portal. I bought Orange Box because of HL:E1 and didn't know anything about Portal other than it was some tech-demo thing included as an extra. Sat down that night, totally blind ... and just blown away for the next three hours, right through to the song at the end. The gradual discovery that this was more than a demo, this was a real game, and more than a game, it was a fucking masterpiece. It didn't need to be anything more than a demo, but they gave it everything anyway. As you play, it just keeps giving.

There are some cultural moments where once they happen, it's impossible to return or feel what it was like before they happened. Like, we will never not live in a world where Vader is Luke's father and everyone knows this. Even people who don't know Star Wars knows this. It's a dramatic moment and still is, but it will never be a surprise anymore. It's the same with Portal. We'll never be in a world where Portal is new and a pleasant surprise on the Orange Box waiting to be discovered.

I have bought and played Tunic this weeked https://store.steampowered.com/app/553420/TUNIC/
It is a Zelda-like and has some Souls-like elements.

I finished the game yesterday. Oh boy it is hard. Thankfully there is a "I don't take any damage" option. I tried it legitimately but at a few parts it was so hard I couldn't stand repeating the section anymore and my thumbs hurt.

I cannot fully recommend the game despite having quite some fun with it. The combat difficulty is one thing but the puzzles are the other. Depending on how much you like obtuse and cryptic puzzles you might like it.
Generally it is best to play it blind, so without any further knowledge than this. It has some kind of cool mystery vibe this way.
I have only looked up some stuff towards the end because I have a life and I don't want to decode all the puzzles and texts by myself for weeks.

Playing Depixtion, which is a color Picross/nonogram game. Each puzzle has three layers, with two colors per layer (dark red/bright red, dark yellow/bright yellow, dark blue/bright blue). So you “build” the full color image by layering colors. If I have a gripe, it’s that the clues are often too small and hard to read once the puzzles get larger, especially when you get to 20 X 20 grids. I keep having to zoom the window to be able to read the numbers. Otherwise, it’s kind of a neat spin on the usual color picross, and I enjoy seeing how the final image comes together.

I could use a bit of spoiler free feedback, if anyone has played Outer Wilds.

I got OW recently on the strength of its reputation. I’m maybe an hour in, enough to have finished the tutorial, gone into space, visited a moon and experienced 1 or 2 resets. And it’s been fine, but my question is, when does it become amazing? Or is it more of a gradual unfolding?

This is likely a case where my expectations were through the roof because of the hype.

I have finally gotten around to trying Nier: Automata! I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing and keep dying every time I go back to the prologue area to level/retrieve my body!

Mainly because of the camera shifts, but also because 9S seems to have made it his mission to get in my way whenever I need to dodge

I am horrible at this game

Edit: lol whoops the game pad I was using has badly drifting sticks, so that can’t be helping. I’ll try a new gamepad and some different chip layouts

Outer Wilds is an alright game that unfortunatly fell into the overhype cycle that's become all too common in video game discussion these days. people oversold the experience of playing it.

i experienced it through a stream and had an alright time, but there's large amounts of faffing about and not getting anything done that are less of a problem when you're watching a streamer you like instead of playing it

the game has issues that people constantly gloss over. it's very similar to subnautica in that it can have a cool atmosphere and all, but getting to that "coolness" requires poking around in the dark. sometimes you'll find something cool, but other times you'll be making the 10th trip to the same location to get something just to progress and be frustrated that you're stuck.

i dunno how to mention a specific planet i'm thinking of without spoiling it, but it's a location that takes near constant trial and error, possibly combined with having to write it all down, to make any sense of it and progress.

Thanks for the feedback, honestly I was having trouble just maneuvering my ship wherever I thought I needed to go.

It’s shelved for the moment and I’m playing The Quarry which is much more my speed.

The Yakuza games are a rabbit hole. I'm playing through the series as a "casual completionist", meaning I do most of the substories, try to do as much as I can that is not obtuse and that make fun, like trying to get all collectibles (locker keys) but not actually 100% it. For example I don't care for the cabaret stuff, as they are super tedious and boring for me, except for 0 and Kiwami 2 where they are a fun mini-games on their own.

Even then my playtime stats for each game are way higher than anticipated, around the 30-40 hour mark, with the exception for Yakuza 5 that is basically a 80 hour game with all the content. Even after finishing the games I'm usually at the 33% completion rating (Kiwami 2 was 60%).

Currently I'm at the beginning of Yakuza 6.

Definitely worth purchasing when on sale, which these games usually are.

Last week I finished Yakuza: Like A Dragon. It's a huge deviation in gameplay but still a Yakuza game in spirit.
I liked it over all. I have spent about 60 hours playing it.
The story is as Yakuza as Yakuza can get: convoluted and complicated with a plot dump towards the end that explains it all.

Also the gameplay gets somewhat repetitive as the dominant strategy is just to do as much damage as possible when it comes to all random encounter battles. I didn't grind for the most part, except the business minigame as it was a good money income for better gear (it didn't get character levels). At some points I actively avoided fights.
So I wasn't over-leveled during the majority of the game. The enemy levels were about 5 levels higher.
In the latter 20% however there are 3 HUGE bumps in difficulty. Boss fights were more interesting as I had to strategize a little more and use more status effect attacks but the enemies at the difficulty spike hit like a dumb truck and are massive damage sponges. The first big difficulty spike I attempted a dozen times before giving up and did some level grinding. According to some guides I did mostly right. I just couldn't survive long enough, especially frustrating when the boss attacks the main guy Ichiban Kasuga multiple times and down him to zero. If he is at 0, it's game over. The only rescue is the item "Sacrifice Stone" that saved my ass but at a cost of one equipment slot.

My lingering low-level frustration with this game is that it made with a classic JRPG mindset. The difficulty spikes are one thing but also the job level system is also an indication of that. There are plenty of jobs but each job has to be leveled as well to gain more abilities. Basically I had to decide very early in order to get the better abilities when I need and stick with it. Luckily there are plenty of characters that join in along the way and do level up when not being in the active party. The effectiveness of that can be increased by leveling up their bond at the bar as the XP multiplier increases a little bit with each level. I would like to play all the different jobs. I want to see the musician job class, or the break dancer, or the host(ess), etc... Maxing out the weapon crafting is also a huge grind, alongside gathering the crafting materials. The mid-level weapons are easy enough as the materials are obtained along the way.
The game is made for multiple playthroughs or completionists in mind with all these different job combinations and that frustrates me.
To be honest: All the other Yakuza games aren't that different either where you can spend an eternity for 100%.

Despite all my ramblings and frustrations I managed to enjoy it quite a bit.

You *can* start with this game but I recommend playing all the previous games first. There are a lot of things that reference past events and there are a hand full of recurring characters. They can be understood on their own for the most part.

My main party was:
Ichiban as Hero
Nanba as Homeless
Saeko as Idol (the only job switched from default when job switching became available).
Eri as Clerk
and rarely:
Joon-Gi Han as Hitman
Adachi as Detective
