Re: PYF marketing silliness
So how's this for a relic from the past? It's an anti-cable television ad from the late 1970s.
According to this, Cable TV is a scary monster. Literally

Re: PYF marketing silliness
I wonder who paid for that. The obvious guess would be the Big Three, but I've never known a world where they weren't as chummy with the cable providers as anybody. Either way, it's clear that some people legitimately worried that the mere existence of pay TV could spell the death of over-the-air channels.
Four decades later, during which we've seen the near-universal adoption of cable, the advent of 1000-channel satellite service, internet video, the digital switchover, the rise and Balkanization of streaming services, and a growing push to repurpose more of the spectrum for wireless internet providers, and there's still no sign that over-the-air TV is going anywhere. Go figure.

IIRC, early cable was super lax on content restrictions, so pornography was relatively common as part of the package. I'm sure moral guardians had a field day with it.

That's where I thought they were going with it, until they didn't. I suppose it's possible they were hiding their true intentions behind a veneer of "we just think entertainment should be free", especially given it was right in the middle of the Sexual Revolution—the one time when just outright admitting you're trying to stamp out porn might not go over well.

The advertisements you see on those channels, especially the smaller ones that cable networks don't pick up for their local packages, are pretty emblematic of just who watches them. That is to say, they advertise to an odd mixture of old people, the poor, and young cable-cutters who keep a pair of rabbit ears around to augment their streaming setups.

People who ditch traditional broadcast TV in favor of purely internet-based media consumption. It's pretty common now that streaming is comparable to or even better than cable in most respects.

ours is both isp and cable too so that means we pay double for the price of one, because that's how it works here just internet is like 70 dollars a month and with both it's 140.DaikatunaRevengeance wrote: ↑Sat Jul 04, 2020 2:42 pmmy isp is also my cable provider so like i got both for the price of one anyway

It's less ditching broadcast than ditching expensive cable packages. More troublesome now that all the online streaming places are jacking up their rates.

It my new place, it's $50/mo* extra for the basic cable package, and they tie it to unlimited data caps for Internet because a lot of people would rather just get Internet these days.DaikatunaRevengeance wrote: ↑Sat Jul 04, 2020 2:42 pmmy isp is also my cable provider so like i got both for the price of one anyway

Re: PYF marketing silliness
This may very well be the dumbest marketing campaign ever. LifeLock is an identity theft protection service company and then-CEO Todd Davis was so confident about his company's service that he launched an ad campaign where they blasted his actual Social Security number (457-55-5462) in promotional materials such as ads, billboards, and trucks.
The guy's identity got stolen 13 times.

Didn't Jeremy Clarkson do a similar thing where he posted his bank account number and was like "no one can actually do anything with it", then someone donated $500 of his own money to some charity.

Re: PYF marketing silliness
Oh, fun fact, those early Charlie the Tuna commercials were made at Warner Bros. Animation. The YouTube link says 1968 but the ad actually originated circa 1962.
In the early 1960s they slowed down production on "Looney Tunes" and started focusing more on advertisements. I think they paid more at that point.

Here's one from Japan. A commercial for Pentax cameras.

From 1959 to 1965 the Peanuts characters were used to market Ford cars in commercials. Here's one from 1962.

Re: PYF marketing silliness
A 1960s commercial for Apple Jacks cereal. There's something ironic about the ad touting that the cereal is "Apple Tasty", given that in the 1990s they made it a big deal that it doesn't actually taste like apples, but kids just love it anyway.
In the 1960s, though, Apple Jack was marketed as "not for bullies".
The commercial was produced by DePatie-Freleng. Voices by Mel Blanc and Paul Frees.
